Social Media ripping apart the social fabric of how society works...

Recommended Posts

Former Facebook exec: "I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works. No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. You are being programmed"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1283&v=PMotykw0SIk

What do you guys think about this? Do you use Facebook/Twitter/etc? Do you think it will continue to get worse, or if people will start to tune it all out?

I call BS. Go back 75 years and there will be people complaining about FM radio and how it will destroy society.

Good thread. Another thing of interest would be the respondent's age.

I'm 45 this month and don't do any social media. I have no facebook or twitter account. The only people online I speak with are you fools.

I call BS. Go back 75 years and there will be people complaining about FM radio and how it will destroy society.

And it did though. The music and television industry had a huge impact on how society behaved and evolved.

While I don't disagree with this my main issue with FB is the stuff I see pop up in my news feed that has been shared by some friends and relatives i.e. fake news and the like and the sh!tstorm that some of it causes.I don't understand why it's so difficult to take 5 minutes and check sources before sharing.

Do you geeks with kids, let them use Social Media? If yes, how do your monitor it?

I have a FB, but rarely log in, and post maybe once or twice a year. I also have IG, and use that somewhat frequently. I like that it's just pictures, and not all of the opinions and fake news stuff. Never used Twitter.

'm sure my 7 year old is going to start asking for one in the next couple years. Don't think I want her on any of it.

I do agree that social media is a vehicle for programming. I do agree that Facebook and other sites and apps like it are at the forefront.

And I do believe that leftists have overwhelming control of the above.

But I also recognize the double-edged sword: this is creating an increasingly polarized society. A segment of society is easily manipulated. They are no-brainers. A segment of society is getting 'woke' to the tactics; this monstrosity is turning them off.

Just like Hillary failed not because her message didn't get across, but because it did. The double-edged sword risks exposing those spreading propaganda as evil. You either believe the crap you hear, or you don't - and you're forced to hone your critical thinking skills to determine which is which.

We don't and we won't be doing social media in this house. FB is a cesspool. I know people whose kids have gone through hell with it.

Im 50. Have FB and Twitter and IG(which some of you already chastised me for).

I barely if ever log onto FB, and I use twitter exclusively for sports. I don't tweet much, rather read other's tweets. I think all the people I "follow" are sports writers.

Yah. Especially with the bullying. That story in the news over the last few days is heart breaking. We used it as an opportunity to remind our daughter how to treat others.

guy I was friends with growing up, is my friend on FB, he is now a liberals, liberal, snowflake society.

put a big crybaby post about bullying.

I said "it's not the bully's that are the issue, it's the poor little snowflakes that can't handle it. only in 2017, do kids cry like little babies about being bullied and kill themselves. back in my day, you punched the bully in the face or you dealt with it yourself"

Well. We went 6 posts without one of the political trolls being a troll. I guess that's pretty good.

...and you think it's trolling to make a cogent point about the above, and to whine - somehow - that politics doesn't play a central role in the programming mentioned.

Much respect to you geeks with kids,I can't even imagine what it must be like trying to raise them at home and then wondering what the hell their being subjected to at school from other students and the like.

Social Media really exasperates the mob mentality though, don't you think?

A friend of mine had to move his kid to another school, used his sisters address. Has to get up every morning and drive her now.

Totally. and it's typically bad. it's rarely good.

People offering up their opinion, not having any facts or anything but one sentence to go on.

The 'programming' exists to create 'mob mentality'. FFS.

I wasn't around in the 50's - but didn't they say similar things about Elvis?

This is much better than the typical "social media is for kids its destroying people arghhhhh!!!" with no basis argument. This I can actually appreciate and agree with it 100%. I think what we consider normal social behavior will just change. Is that good? I don't know.

It appears that it's worse with girls.

my buddy (53) was told last Thursday he has a very treatable form of cancer, like 85% recovery.

tells his family. boy 19 graduated last year and girl 15, sophmore this year ( 32 B )

On Friday, at school,. she starts telling people her father has cancer and making it seem like, woah is me, he is going to die.

On Saturday, I am driving to Springfield to bring the fam to that dinosaur thing. I hadn't even talked to my friend that has the cancer yet.

Another friend of mine, has a daughter in HS,she heard about it, told her dad and he called me to ask me if I knew about.

girls are such attention wh0res, it's gross.

absolutely there is.

almost every one of us was picked on, some worst that others and also picked on other kids.

No one committed suicide or had social media to cry on for attention

I never had kids but would like to think that I would've raised them to be decent human beings, that said I also agree with edjr, you come home and are complaining about being picked on you have to take a stand because I sure as hell am not moving you to a new school.

I don't know man. I was a pretty small kid in school and got picked on a lot... I'm not sure I would have been able to handle it if I grew up today.

That stuff messes with your man.. I sprouted up pretty good and started lifting weights but there are still some guys that if they said the wrong thing I would probably tune up.... And it's been 30 years.

Having three girls I'm definitely worried about how that stuff goes for them.

I can't imagine being the kid in school who got picked on now. It would be never ending and not every child or teen is courageous enough to fight back physically.

I think there are also far more adults setting a bad example, than there were 40-50 years ago.

It wasn't everywhere you looked like it is now.

If I had trouble at school I went home and it was over.

Now with social media and kids having phones at younger ages they can't get away from it like we could. It's much more vicious and much more anonymous.

I know a family that adopted a little boy that's burnt on over 50% of his body, even to the point it affects his speech etc. He's about 12 now and they're having real issues with him being rebellious and he even tried running away from home.Apparently he's being picked on at school a lot and just can't take it.Kids can be so focking cruel sometimes and I'm not saying this kid deserves special treatment but damn a little empathy for his situation would be nice.

This hits home for me. I brutally picked on a special needs kid that was in a cooking class with me. I think it was senior year, I was taking it just for credits (I got kicked out of the class for picking on the sped) Just think, it was cooking class, imagine the sh1t I had at my disposal to use. Why did I do it? Fock if I know. Sucks to even remember I did it. I am not in anyway okay with picking on someone for being different. (like the kid in your post) or any other kid. but picking on a kid for his hair cut, or something fixable, WTF, let kids be kids.

That anonymity is really the biggest part of it IMO.

But, I think the subject is much bigger than just bullying on FB. It's the instant gratification and disconnect from community itself. Being able to connect with everybody is actually making society more isolated.

So bullied kids shouldn't have social media so they can't get bullied more.

You realize how stupid that sounds right?

The problem isn't the social media it's how it's being used.

And we didn't need to wear neon and parachute pants in the 80's, but most of us did. Kids want to fit in.

This. I have to remind my kids to unplug and get away from the drama.
