Any Geeks have any insight into sour beers?

Recommended Posts

Heading up to Asheville, NC this weekend with the wife for a weekend getaway. There's a brewery there called Funkatorium that brews their own sours. Never had them before, but my uncle has become a big beer aficionado and said to go there and try their sours. Never had one before and curious to see if any of your geeks have tried them. If so, did you like them?

I have liked them for a while. my favorite is duchess de bourgogne from belgium. le folie from New belgium is good, and Aunt Salley and Dark Swan from lagunitas also do well.

From my understanding it's beer that's made with wild bacteria and yeast. There's a wide array of what they can taste like from really sour to sweet and fruity. I've never had one either so this weekend when I go to the brewery to try it I'll let you know my assessment. From the reviews I've read though the beer there is pretty dam phenomenal

i had known them as flemish sour biers. they are also known as flanders red sours.... they are made with certain "organisms" that elicit lactic acid in fermentation which provide a sour taste, plus they typically have longer barrel aging than most bier. there is a decent continuum of taste from very sour to sweet...usually a little fruity. it is a unique style of bier. i also enjoy good lambics. if someone hasn't stretched their range of bier, both of these may not even seem like beer.

I'm not a huge fan but my wife is. They are generally more expensive but do tend to have a higher alcohol content than a lot of other beers.

I had bitters when i was in England... Guess its really popular there, lots of little pubs and taverns in the countryside make their own. Not a huge fan of them but it was something different to try

So here's the verdict: they are focking awesome. Had a flight of them while there and loved them. Some were better than others. Wife even liked a few (and she hates beer). Ended up getting a bottle of one to take home. Blonde sour infused with tropical fruits. Had to take the wife to a cidery so she could have something she at least liked. And the cidery was actually pretty dam good. They've got some legit good breweries up here in Asheville so if you're around here I highly recommend going to one

Funkatoriam is the name of wicked weed's taste room.... they were basicly banished from the craft beer world for selling to anheuser busch

I have a had a number of their beers before they sold and they were ok. They were kind of known for pumping out 1000's of different beers with wild combos but never doing anything amazingly well

Yep. It's a sister branch. Had great beers when I went. Gonna try other places later on. Just had to try the sours once since I've never had them

If you want to try a great example of a quality sour that is not rediculiously hard to find.. go to a quality bottle shop and find "sour in the rye" by the bruery

I'll have to try that. Found a dam shop in downtown charleston that has all different kinds of brandy, whiskey, rum, scotch, single malts, etc all in casks. You can try them and then get a bottle of them. Can't find these in your typical store. All special kinds. It was some German run place but flat out amazing

La Folie and La Terrior are two New Belgium sours you can get just about anywhere. If you're ever in the Denver area and want a good sour go to Crooked Stave. They specialize in sours and generally have a dozen or so on tap. Definitely my favorite sours.

Also, if anyone was a World of Beer near them, they occasionally do a "Sour Beer Fest" where you pay like $40 and can drink all the sours you can handle all night.

I love crooked stave but at least in NY I found their price point unnecessarily high

It's high in Colorado straight from their tap room also. Their tap room is in a really cool area with 5 or 6 other tap rooms within walking distance so we almost always make a stop in when we're bar hopping down there (especially if my wife is with us).
