71.7 Bob Givens Visual Artist

In 1937, Givens began his career at Disney, working on Donald Duck and Snow White, then joined Warner Bros in 1940, becoming famous for his Bugs Bunny work. He refined the original Tex Avery drawings to create the Bugs we all know and love.

The genesis of Bugs Bunnys redesign began with a conversation with director Tex Avery. The original sketches of the character looked like Daffy Duck, said Mariana Givens, and was deemed too cute for the type of mischief that rascally rabbit Bugs would concoct.

Givens went to work and came up with the first official design for the Looney Tunes character, who became one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in the world.

71.8 Don Rickles - Other Performing Artist

Donald Jay Rickles (May 8, 1926 – April 6, 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, voice actor and author. He became well known as an insult comic. His prominent film roles included Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) with Clark Gable and Kelly's Heroes (1970) with Clint Eastwood, and beginning in 1976 he enjoyed a two-year run starring in the NBCtelevision sitcom C.P.O. Sharkey.

He received widespread exposure as a popular guest on numerous talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman, and later voiced Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story franchise. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for the 2007 documentary Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.

72.1 Josiah Royce - Thinker/Philosopher

Royce, born in Grass Valley, California, on November 20, 1855. He was the son of Josiah and Sarah Eleanor (Bayliss) Royce, whose families were recent English emigrants, and who sought their fortune in the westward movement of the American pioneers in 1849. He received the B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley (which moved from Oakland to Berkeley during his matriculation) in 1875 where he later accepted an instructorship teaching English composition, literature, and rhetoric. While at the university, he studied with Joseph LeConte, Professor of Geology and Natural History, and a prominent spokesperson for the compatibility between evolution and religion. In a memorial published shortly after LeConte's death,[5] Royce described the impact of LeConte's teaching on his own development, writing: "the wonder thus aroused was, for me, the beginning of philosophy" (p. 328). After some time in Germany, where he studied with Hermann Lotze, the Johns Hopkins University awarded him in 1878 one of its first four doctorates, in philosophy. At Johns Hopkins he taught a course on the history of German thought, which was “one of his chief interests” because he was able to give consideration to the philosophy of history.[6] After four years at the University of California, Berkeley, he went to Harvard in 1882 as a sabbatical replacement for William James, who was at once Royce's friend and philosophical antagonist. Royce's position at Harvard was made permanent in 1884 and he remained there until his death, on September 14, 1916.

Royce stands out starkly in the philosophical crowd because he was the only major American philosopher who spent a significant period of his life studying and writing history, specifically of the American West. “As one of the four giants in American philosophy of his time […] Royce overshadowed himself as historian, in both reputation and output” (Pomeroy, 2). During his first three years at Harvard, Royce taught many different subjects such as English composition, forensics, psychology and philosophy for other professors. Although he eventually settled into writing philosophy, his early adulthood was characterized by wide-ranging interests, during which he wrote a novel, investigated paranormal phenomena (as a skeptic), and published a significant body of literary criticism. Only as historian and philosopher did he distinguish himself. Royce spread himself too thin, however, and in 1888 suffered a nervous breakdown which required him to take a leave of absence from his duties.

72.2 Bryan vs. Itasca County - Court Case

Most of you are too young to remember, but there was a time when Vegas was the only place where you could legally gamble in the U.S. Atlantic City and riverboats eventually followed, but this court case set Native Americans up to change the gaming landscape forever.

How close is your nearest casino now? I have one 5 min from my house, and another 20 min away.

In the early 1970s, Russell and Helen Bryan, a married Chippewa couple living in a mobile home on Indian lands in northern Minnesota, received a property tax bill from the local county, Itasca County.[3] The Bryans had never received a property tax bill from the county before. Unwilling to pay it, they took the tax notice to local legal aid attorneys at Leech Lake Legal Services, who brought suit to challenge the tax in the state courts. The Bryans lost their case in the state district court, and they lost again on appeal in a unanimous decision by the Minnesota Supreme Court. They then sought review in the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court granted review, and in a sweeping and unanimous decision authored by Justice Brennan, the Supreme Court held not only that states do not have authority to tax Natives on their reservations, but that they also lack the authority to regulate Native activities on their reservations.[3] As Gaming Law Professor Kevin K. Washburn has explained, the stage was now set for Native gaming. Within a few years,[4][5]enterprising Natives and tribes began to operate Indian bingo operations in numerous different locations around the United States.

Fockin' love this guy. Both brilliant and easy to read. He's like the Feynman of evolutionary biology. Too bad he died so relatively young, he should still be with us now.

72.7 William Henry Harrison - Congressman

William Henry Harrison Sr. (February 9, 1773 – April 4, 1841) was an American military officer, a principal contributor in the War of 1812, and the ninth President of the United States (1841). He was the last president born before the American Revolution, and died of pneumonia just 31 days into his term, thereby serving the shortest tenure in United States presidential history. He was the first president to die in office, and his death sparked a brief constitutional crisis. Its resolution left unsettled Constitutional questions as to the presidential line of succession until the passage of the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1967. Harrison was a son of Founding Father Benjamin Harrison V and the paternal grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd United States President (1889–1893).

Before election as president, Harrison served as the first congressional delegate from the Northwest Territory and the first Governor of Indiana Territory. He gained national fame for leading U.S. forces against Native Americans at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811,[2] where he earned the nickname "Old Tippecanoe". He was promoted to major general in the subsequent War of 1812, and served in the Battle of the Thames the following year. This battle resulted in the death of Tecumseh and the dissolution of the Native American coalition which Tecumseh had led.[3]

73.6 - Kennesaw Mountain Landis - Reformer

Kenesaw Mountain Landis (/ˈkɛnɪsɔː ˈmntɪn ˈlændɪs/; November 20, 1866 – November 25, 1944) was an American jurist who served as a federal judge from 1905 to 1922 and as the first Commissioner of Baseball from 1920 until his death. He is remembered for his handling of the Black Sox scandal, in which he expelled eight members of the Chicago White Sox from organized baseball for conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series and repeatedly refused their reinstatement requests.[1] His firm actions and iron rule over baseball in the near quarter-century of his commissionership are generally credited with restoring public confidence in the game.

73.8 Reno v. Flores

Figured it was appropriate since it's been in the news lately.

Reno v. Flores, 507 U.S. 292 (1993) was a Supreme Court of the United States case in which the Court held that the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s regulations regarding the release of alien unaccompanied minors did not violate the Due Process Clause of the United States Constitution.

In 1997, after the Supreme Court remanded the matter to the District Court, the parties agreed to a consent decree in which the litigation would end once the government implemented certain standards for the detention, treatment, and release of unaccompanied alien minors. The District Court retained jurisdiction after the settlement and the case remains open and active as of June 2018.

74.1 Grover Cleveland - President

Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 – June 24, 1908) was an American politician and lawyer who was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, the only president in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office (1885–89 and 1893–97).[1]He won the popular vote for three presidential elections – in 1884, 1888, and 1892 – and was one of two Democrats (with Woodrow Wilson) to be elected president during the era of Republican political domination dating from 1861 to 1933.

73.4 - Edward Teller - Physics

Edward Teller (Hungarian: Teller Ede; January 15, 1908 September 9, 2003) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist who is known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb", although he claimed he did not care for the title.[1] He made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics, spectroscopy (in particular the JahnTeller and RennerTeller effects), and surface physics. His extension of Enrico Fermi's theory of beta decay, in the form of GamowTeller transitions, provided an important stepping stone in its application, while the JahnTeller effect and the BrunauerEmmettTeller (BET) theory have retained their original formulation and are still mainstays in physics and chemistry.[2] Teller also made contributions to ThomasFermi theory, the precursor of density functional theory, a standard modern tool in the quantum mechanical treatment of complex molecules. In 1953, along with Nicholas Metropolis, Arianna Rosenbluth, Marshall Rosenbluth, and Augusta Teller, Teller co-authored a paper that is a standard starting point for the applications of the Monte Carlo method to statistical mechanics.[3] Throughout his life, Teller was known both for his scientific ability and for his difficult interpersonal relations and volatile personality.

74.2 John Winthrop Religious Leader

John Winthrop, a powerful Puritan leader was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 74.3 - Nat Turner - African American

Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 – November 11, 1831) was an American slave who led a rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia on August 21, 1831. The rebels went from plantation to plantation, gathering horses and guns, freeing other slaves along the way, and recruiting other blacks who wanted to join their revolt. During the rebellion, Virginia legislators targeted free blacks with a colonization bill, which allocated new funding to remove them, and a police bill that denied free blacks trials by jury and made any free blacks convicted of a crime subject to sale and relocation.[1] The slaves killed approximately sixty white men, women and children. Whites organized militias and called out regular troops to suppress the uprising. In addition, white militias and mobs attacked blacks in the area, killing an estimated 120,[2][3] many of whom were not involved in the revolt.[4]

In the aftermath, the state tried those accused of being part of Turner's slave rebellion, 18 were executed, 14 were transported out of state and 32 were acquitted.[5]Turner hid successfully for two months. When found, he was tried, convicted, sentenced to death, and hanged. Across Virginia and other southern states, state legislators passed new laws to control slaves and free blacks. They prohibited education of slaves and free blacks, restricted rights of assembly for free blacks, withdrew their right to bear arms (in some states), and to vote (in North Carolina, for instance), and required white ministers to be present at all black worship services.

In Los Alamos, Richard Feynman was a genius man-child running around a secret laboratory, teaching himself to pick safes and having fun irritating the security guards. Then later, refused to work on the H-bomb, along the way winning the Nobel Prize and solving the reason for the challenger shuttle explosion.

Here's a little short video where Bill Gates identifies Feynman as "the best teacher I never had" and does a good job showing what makes him so great.

74.7 James A. Garfield - President

Garfield's accomplishments as president included a resurgence of presidential authority against senatorial courtesy in executive appointments, energizing American naval power, and purging corruption in the Post Office, all during his extremely short time in office. Garfield made notable diplomatic and judicial appointments, including a U.S. Supreme Court justice. He enhanced the powers of the presidency when he defied the powerful New York senator Roscoe Conkling by appointing William H. Robertson to the lucrative post of Collector of the Port of New York, starting a fracas that ended with Robertson's confirmation and Conkling's resignation from the Senate. Garfield advocated agricultural technology, an educated electorate, and civil rights for African Americans. He also proposed substantial civil service reform, eventually passed by Congress in 1883 and signed into law by his successor, Chester A. Arthur, as the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act.

could have been one of the great ones
