remote controller 133 Posted November 25, 2014 Lately I have found tiny black specs at the bottom of my bourbon glass. I have been drinking the same bourbon for years, at least my house brand, and have just lately seen them. I do think I have read that this is normal but was too lazy to check when I have a wealth of information on hand here, and we all need a break from Ferguson. BunnysBastatrds 1,914 Posted November 26, 2014 Lately I have found tiny black specs at the bottom of my bourbon glass. I do think I have read that this is normal but was too lazy to check when I have a wealth of information on hand here, and we all need a break from Ferguson. Good southern bourbon is filtered and then stored in wood barrels for seven or more years until bottled. I worked at a large home improvement store when I was in Hugh school. We got the used barrels that Jack Daniels sold after they were discarded and replaced. They were cut in half and sold as plant or bush pots. During the summer we get a few hundred of them and stack them in front if the gardening center. About twice a week we would have to hose them down as the summer heat would make the wood dry and they needed moisture to keep them intact and keep them from shrinking. The only thing keeping them intact were the steel bands and them staying wet. If you didn't wet them down, they would contract. So my boss being the comedian that he was, would make anybody who came in late or hungover on Saturday mornings and hose them down. Worst task you give to someone hung over. As soon as the water hit those charcoal bourbon barrels, the smell if bourbon hit you in the face immediately. Pukarama for us hungover dumbasses working and a few hungover customers who were also caught in the garden center punishment. I have never had a sip of JD since then. Either your bourbon is charcoal filtered, or you have drunk to the point you are seeing things.
shotsup 832 Posted November 26, 2014 JD in barrels for 7 summers and 7 winters. Not just 7 years. They reuse the barrels to burn for charcoal filtering. I me some JD
IGotWorms 3,312 Posted November 26, 2014 JD is garbage. But cheap, so I can see how it might be necessary if you're drinking a bottle a night

Sho Nuff 719 Posted November 26, 2014 Jack Daniels is not bourbon Yes, it actually is classified as a straight bourbon. They meet all qualifications...then add the charcoal filtering that doesn't actually disqualify them...despite the myths. But even JD does not want that and calls itself a Tennessee Whiskey. No it's not a bourbon and not so by legal action taken by the JD distillery

Sho Nuff 719 Posted November 26, 2014 its not bourbon unless it is produced in the Bourbon County Tennessee. Much like only champagne can come from specific region of France. That is a myth. JD is technically a straight bourbon. JD does not want to be called that but a TN whiskey...technicality to me. It meets the criteria of a bourbon...and being produced in Bourbon County Kentucky is not one of the actual qualifications.

Sho Nuff 719 Posted November 27, 2014 JD disagrees with you http://www.jackdaniels.com/faqs As I said...they are rejecting it to call themselves a Tennessee Whiskey...which is a huge part of their branding. By actual specifications though, they are "technically" as I said a straight bourbon.

Get yourself some Woodford Reserve or Four Roses and give yourself something for which to be truly thankful.

Meh...Id take Basil Haydens over either of those. or Angel's Envy Was not a fan of Four Roses. Woodford is ok. JD is only when I buy a handle of it to have around the house for mixed drinks for people. And even then, many times I prefer Jim Beam Black to JD.

Cruzer 1,992 Posted January 7, 2015 What's the skinny on Maker's Mark? Never having been a bourbon drinker - I've decided to try and find one I enjoy. I've only tried a couple so far, but I really seem to like this one. Is it considered a good bourbon?
Sho Nuff 719 Posted January 7, 2015 Makers is good. More readily available and more affordable than things like Bookers and such....step up from Beam.

Cruzer 1,992 Posted November 23, 2015 Was treated to a glass of Johnnie Walker Blue this weekend... A wealthy buddy of mine bought the entire poker table a round. There were 8 of us - no telling what that cost, but it was a lot. I guess I just don't have a palate for scotch. It was okay I guess, definitely smooth - but nothing I'd ever want to spend a couple hundred bucks for on a bottle.

Meglamaniac 380 Posted November 23, 2015 Buffalo Trace is also in this category. I think it's made by the same people as Eagle Rare, but I like the Buff better. The Buffalo Trace Disttilery is responsible for a number of quality bourbons such as Eagle Rare Blantons WL Weller Papy Van Winkle ET Lee Rock Hill Farms Buffalo Trace As for BT its a little too chalky for my taste but a good entry level bourbon

He prob spent $80-$100 on the shots. Granted they are more than normal shots but not outrageous like you would think. You're talking about $200 bottle. So while it is probably better than a lot of bourbons it's not as exquisite.

I had a good bourbon this weekend that paired well with the cigar a few of us were having. It was called Elijah Craig. Pretty smooth and went well with the cigar
