***Official Seattle Seahawks Thread 2012***

We are going to need a big game from Greg Scruggs.

Irvin is not an every-down DE. He's going to have to take some snaps off, probably a fair number of 1st down plays.

I realize he's just a 7th rounder, but Browner was an UFA, so hopefully here's another diamond in the rough. Scruggs has had whole season to learn the defense, whereas the new guy is just that, a new guy, will take time to learn schemes, stunts, etc.

Yeah, that would be nice. I'm hoping are other linemen setup. Maybe some pressure up the middle, which Ryan doesn't like and they are a bit weak.

I think what we really need though is some dialed up blitzes, stunts, and other ways to give pressure.

I think Irvn will do a decent job replacing Clemmons though. He just won't finish all the time like him, but he'll give constant edge rush out wide. Hopefully, that will be enough to distract and pressure Ryan.

My key: Stop Gonzo! 3rd downs Ryan loves him.

And jump out fast on them, and let Wilson do his thing. Long drives keeping Atl O off the field and our Def fresh.

The scuttlebutt here in Philadelphia is that with Brian Kelly rejecting the job the Eagles offered him, Gus Bradley looks like the front runner right now for the job.

I guess Ken Norton Jr would then become our defensive coordinator.

Take him. I've warmed up to the guy, but have my doubts on how he would do being "the man". With Carroll and Norton the D would be just fine.

Im shocked there hasn't been any chatter on Cable. I mean I'm sure the guy he punched deserved it.

How in the world do you root for a division rival?

I wasn't going to, but Atlanta squirting out of this one like a brown trickle down Pete Carroll's leg just rubbed me the wrong way. I respect that the 49ers are a smash-mouth team that plays football the manly way unlike this NuNFL throw it 50 times a game fairy crap Goodell and the rest of the league have forced on us fans. Plus a SF/NE Superbowl will be a much better game.

It feels dirty rooting for a rival, but as a Steelers fan I'm sure you can understand my reasoning a little bit. I rooted hard for Arizona a few years ago too. The devils you know I guess....

Great season... better than what I expected. I was a early season Russell Wilson hater and I regret doubting him. He is a leader and a great QB. There is nothing bad to say about this Season. There was not 1 game where we got blown out. Every loss was close and winnable.

I'm excited for the future of this team. Our defense is over-rated imo. We need to stop that run. hopefully they can address that in the draft.

Well, I hate Pats as much as Ravens, so next week could end up sucking. But my reasons of hating Pats is cause they beat the Steelers like 3 times in AFC champ games...Ravens are just a rival and a team you just feel dirty watching.

Same boat, I'm forced to root for the Falcons and Texans by default. Hate the Ravens because of the division rivalry, hate the Patriots because of the playoff rivalry, hate the 49'ers because I don't want to see anybody tie the Steelers in SB wins. So the Texans and Falcons represent the two lesser of four evils.

Sort of pulling for that out of the want for new blood in the SB.

Though, I don't know if I want to live in a world where Matt Ryan is seen as a quality postseason QB.

The horrific aftermath and falling into utter emptiness.

This is a novel with the last 10 pages ripped out. The season was not supposed to end like this. Engineering one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history, only to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory, blowing a lead with only 31 ticks left on the clock, and making is look real easy for Matt Ryan. Hey, didn't the Bills win against the Oilers when they pulled off the comeback? Isn't that how this story is supposed to end? Then, a triumphant win over San Fran, then beating New England for the 2nd time this season for the Superbowl? Wasn't this destined? All but for 31 inglorious ticks on the clock. Damn you football gods, for giving me such unbridled hope. This is going to be a very long, yawning chasm of an offseason. I hear the sound of John Locke in LOST saying over and over "Don't Tell Me What I Can't Do". That sums up this 2012-13 campaign as appropriately as anything I can come up with.

Where does this team go from here? Well, quite possibly looking for a new offensive and/or defensive coordinator. As far as unrestricted free agents, the key players are Jason Jones, Alan Branch, and Leroy Hill, along with Hauschka and a couple of other special teams guys. I'd like to bring back Branch and Jones. Leroy Hill is likely not coming back, but I don't think the starter at his LB spot is currently on the roster. Malcolm Smith isn't that strong. Draft needs? Well, it would be nice to add another WR. Funny how there was concern at the skill set of the wideouts, but as the season progressed, they proved very capable. That's because Rice stayed healthy and on the field, and Wilson became a most accurate thrower. Need some offensive line help to go with Unger and Okung. Clearly, Carpenter and Moffit have not worked out as expected. On defense, like a broken record, I'm begging for DE help. Irvin was underwhelming and will never be anything but a 3rd and long specialist that gets steamrolled on reading plays. Clemons return is highly dubious. You need pass rushers. There was so little pressure on Matt Ryan for an entire game that it made you cringe.

As a Bengals fan, I'm rooting for the Ravens to beat the Patriots next week. I've always liked Ray Lewis as a player & his leadership intangibles plus I went to school with Ray Rice. Hopefully we'll see the Ravens team that showed up on Saturday to knock donkey face out of the playoffs!

Agreed pretty much across the board.

Remember ages ago, maybe '02, when the Giants blew that 24-pt lead over the Niners and lost 39-38 - the busted field goal snap? I remember seeing the game next week, Niners at Bucs, and thinking, hey! Wrong matchup! The wrong team somehow landed in this game. And I'm not even a Giants fan. Now I see the schedule for next week's NFC Championship Game and thinking the same thing. Not supposed to be like this! This game should be in San Francisco! TURN THESE MACHINES BACK ON! TURN THESE MACHINES BACK ON!!

On personnel, man, in retrospect do I wish we had drafted Chandler Jones instead of Irvin. Irvin had been a luxury so long as Clemons was there to provide *some* pressure on early downs, and also hold up against the run. Irvin is a guy you can bring in for 20%-30% of the plays, not 50%-60%. Jones would have been fine in run support. Yes we need us some DE support, and also some DT support. I love Mebane, he's stout against the run, but we need someone who can help create some tackles for loss, sacks, or at least consistent QB pressure. I want a rangy OLB to take Hill's place, I assume he won't be back. I want a fast WR to create more room for Tate, Miller and Baldwin underneath. And I want another pass-catching TE because Miller is getting a bit long in the tooth. I am still hopeful that Carpenter and Moffitt can grow into their roles, much as Unger took a step forward this year, but I am saying that without a lot of enthusiasm.

Still, the team is young and only getting better. The window for the core of this team is still open for the next 3-5 years.

Wow! Still not fully recovered. Comeback of epic proportions spirals into a gut wrenching kick in the balls loss. First of all, I keep hearing people trying to blame Carroll for the loss because of the 4th and 1 call. Stop it. It was the right decision. Blame the play call, blame the missed block, don't blame the decision. I would rather lose with my coach being aggressive rather than losing because my coach is too conservative (see John Fox).

I thought CBS' James Brown said it best: The Falcons outlast the Seahawks. We didn't lose; we ran out of time. Congrats ATL. I don't think you have a chance in hell agaisnt SF but congrats.

This team is exciting, so exicitng I'm wearing shades today! Russell Wilson no words required. Zach Miller: what can you say? He tears his plantar fascia yet comes back to have a great game! Golden Tate continues to progress. Richard Sherman? Yeah he balled! Just a tremendous year, sorry to see it end. But the draft and FA now become the focus. 10 draft picks to come in and take this team to the next level. The ride is just starting! :headbanger:

Yes indeed the team will upgrade both the 3-tech DT position and the DE position. I'm not going to kill Irivn. Heck Aldon Smith disappeared without Justin Smith, but the line needs help and that will be addressed this offseason. I have confidence that PC/JS will fix it.

I'm a bit worried because wasn't that the goal of this past draft, to fix the defensive line? Other than Russell Wilson, didn't we draft a lot of defensive players early last year? Got lucky with Bobby Wagner, as he wasn't their target at LB, but he was certainly the correct answer. But the other defensive players were mostly underwhelming. I guess maybe somebody else may come around, like a Golden Tate, after a few years; although with a packed roster, do you have time anymore to wait on players to develop? I don't know. Wilson, Turbin, Sweezey, hey, they hit some offensive players. And I'm rambling. But they never seem to fix the defensive line properly. The roster building overall has been nothing short of breath taking in it's beauty. But that dam defensive line. They've actually regressed from the first year under Carroll with Clemons and Brock both having success with pressure.

Look, I have to complain about something. It's my nature.

I think the game yesterday and Irvin's performance look a bit different if both Clemons and Jason Jones play. Remember, Jones was brought in as a pass rushing DT.

As for the draft: Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner, Jay Howard, Kory Toomer, Jeremy Lane, Winston Guy, Greg Scruggs. I like Bruce Irivn; I think he will eventually become what they hoped, a pass rush specialist who prospers from having talent across the line. Wagner was solid. I think Jeremy Lane has some talent. I am intrigued by Winston Guy for next year. He had some issues this year. Howard, Toomer, and Scruggs, to me, were disappointments. But that's the draft, right? You hit some and you miss some. I think PC/JS will hit more than they will miss.

Edit:

Ok, back to work. Seahawks draft blog will now go full force into the draft. The hawks pick #25 and have 10 picks. On January 11th (and this will change) here are Robs's ideal drafts picks for the Seahawks:

Top five ‘ideal picks’ – 11th January

#1 Sheldon Richardson (DT, Missouri)

#2 Alec Ogletree (LB, Georgia)

#3 Zach Ertz (TE, Stanford)

#4 DeAndre Hopkins (WR, Clemson)

#5 Arthur Brown (LB, Kansas State)

Wild card: Margus Hunt (DE, SMU) – there’s something about a 275lbs pass-rushing discuss thrower from Estonia that screams Pete Carroll and John Schneider.

Great season for the Hawks!

That one hurt in the way it went down, and I'm still hurting, but what a game. I can't say enough about little R. Wilson. Love that dude.

Franchise QB finally =

The peaces are in place for season's to come and if we can get some home field games in the playoff's THEN we make a big time run.

Disappointing that it's over, but congrats to Atlanta. Well played.

Our Def let us down big time in my view all across the board really. But, QB pressure was easily lacking the entire game.

What I noticed all year on def was long drives by the other teams, lack of pass rush other then Clemons, and our run def. let me down the most and regressed, and we still can't take away the good TE's.

This all showed up against Atlanta. Heck of an effort in the 2nd half though!

I know our def is good, but there is a few problems and I think it starts with the pass rush of course like a lot of you already have been saying for a number of years. (Kind of vanilla calls all year too, so that's on Def Coord.)

So it's pretty clear cut what we need next year in my view.

1. DE/DT help - Need a pressure guy very bad who can run support. Probably at DT as well as DE.

2. WR - Get a BIG fast one. Push Rice to #2, Tate to the slot and gadget plays

3. LB - Who can cover and shutdown the TE. Coverage guy.

4. DT/MLB/Safety - This is for a Run stopping stud that we need.

I'm not sure what position of the 3 we are weak at, but I think one of these let us down in run support this year.

5. Oh, forgot to add in TE.

I think this is supposed to be a strong year for pass-rushing discus throwers. Kiper has one in his Top 50 who can decapitate a QB from 15 paces.

Amazing season and if we have to join the other 28 teams on the sidelines it was a fun final game.

Thanks to all the posters that kept us homers honest and I look forward to crying myself to sleep next year after a particular vicious post by you guys. :headbanger:

I never said they would win it all nor really expect that they would with all road games. In fact, I was the most worried Hawks fan here about this Atlanta game.

Besides who needs to justify anything to you or anybody else. We are an up and coming team and that's all I care about and we found a franchise QB finally. Only 1 team wins it. Lots of teams eventually go home. :D

On the O.

I'm already on record for wanting a WR, I won't even go into it. But to put a kid with Rice,Tate and Baldwin is huge.

I think we need another TE. We use alot of 2 TE sets. To do that you need 3 quality kids. Someone to go with Miller and McCoy will be great.

And you can always keep an eye open for a lineman. If there's a guy Cable really likes, than I think he's owed his input and what he wants.

The D. I can't say anything else you guys havn't already said, or Philly till he's blue in the face. Passrush.

Before we go to the draft, and look at kids we'd like, we do have some questions i'd like to hear from you guys though.

The secondary looks good, even if Trufant is gone, thanks for the memories. we don't even have to think twice about that spot.

But for the front and middle, we got 3 guys who are FA's

Hill

Branch

Jones

Do we/you guys want these guys back? That has to be addressed before we look to new FA's or go to the draft.

Even though he are very healthy under the cap, I think there is little to no chance of signing anyone of note in free agency, unless a top of cap room is cleared. There is a lot of young talent on the team, so you better start planning long term as far as signing some players now to manageable contracts to massage the cap, and assume you will be spending a lot of bucks every year to keep the talent going forward. Hell, there are a lot of low round picks making nothing right nwo. This team will have to add and keep going forward via the draft. There is no other way right now.

I'm with you on all that.....

I think Hill should be gone, and a new replacement in the draft or maybe even free agency if something is out there.

Jones and Branch would be nice to get back. At least one of them. I'd like to find there replacement in the draft too though. If we had to pick one of these two I'm not sure. Seems like Jones did a lot when he was playing. Good pass rusher.

Trufont no question should be gone. I like some of the other kids we've got and maybe add another one again late in the draft.

I wouldn't mind packaging up some picks this year to get our WR or DE that is a stand out. Move up this time.

I was listening to Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan today talking about those guys. Of the three, they feel the only one the Hawks will make a real effort to sign is Branch. The other two, who they feeel won't be hot FA commoditities, will be invited back after the draft depending on who the team missed out on. I also heard JS and he basically said they won't be big players in FA. They have 10 picks and they want to start locking up core players.

As for your draft needs. I think the team will definitely look to upgrade the TE position but I think it may come at the expense of McCoy. The guy juts makes so many mental and physical mistakes. I wpould love another WR to along woth what we have. I think Philly said it best that as the season wore on and Russell improved so to did our perceptions of the WRs on the roster. I know Harvin is not happy in Minny, would love to take a run at him.

Philly is right again in that pass rush is the # 1 priority. PC was asked whether the Hawks would target a pass rusher and he said something like yea a few of them. So expect multiple pass rushers to be brought in.

I can kind of picture Irvin as a linebacker with pass rush skills for when the Defense slips into 4/3 hybrid alignment. What we need to do is get Red Bryant to watch footage on Justin Smith from the 49ers and pick up some of those veteran tricks like holding a couple offensive linemen and running stunts for Aldon Smith. I could see Irvin/Red Bryant doing a decent imitation of the Smiths up here.

Not a Seattle fan just hate ATL -- seriously less than 30 second left they have it around their own 25 and you can't hold them?

Unfortunately Clemons is 90% of our entire pass rush, hence our begging for a pass rusher to be drafted. I think on the play we had blitzed our nickel cornerback and Ryan nailed Douglas right where the CB had vacated the spot. The fact that we couldnt manufacutre a pass rush with our front four ended up killing us. Which is what I think most the Hawks homers where afraid of. Clemons might be the most under-rated player in the NFL currently. Or at the very least our defensive MVP but he wont get the credit he deserves, its too bad.
