Majority of Americans support harsh interrogation techniques and torture.

Looks like the resident bedwetters are in the minority.

A more recent poll, conducted by the Associated Press in 2013, confirmed Pew’s findings. AP found that a little more than half of Americans said they favor the U.S. government’s use of harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists to seek information about terrorist activities: 28 percent said they strongly favor them, and 23 percent moderately favored them. The same survey found that 22 percent of Americans strongly opposed harsh interrogation techniques and 16 percent moderately opposed them, with 11 percent reporting that they are either neutral or undecided.

Notable is the AP poll’s use of the phrase “harsh interrogation techniques,” which is more commonly employed by supporters of such techniques. The Pew surveys, on the other hand, use the word “torture,” a word favored by critics of methods such as waterboarding.

“As to the apparent evolution of American public opinion,” Dunlap said, “I do think the terms used matter, as does the subjective understanding of the person questioned as to what each means.” “Given that lawyers can still argue over the precise meaning of ‘torture’ — for example, is it some kind of psychological torture for an Islamic extremist to be interrogated by a female? By a Christian? Exactly what level of discomfort constitutes ‘torture?’ — it may be understandable that the results of any poll may be anomalous.”

Yay, another thread about this.

BTW...I will gladly be in the minority of what other people think when I know I am on the correct side of the issue.

Just like how the majority of voters voted for Obama, twice. Just because the majority agrees with it doesn't make it right.

I saw McCain speaking yesterday (he could have been testifying somewhere) and he stated that it generally didn't bring a bunch of valid information. Side note, and not that this is funny, but NBC news felt it had to tell viewers that McCain is the only member of Congress to be tortured as a prisoner of war.

The Republican response to DiFi's opinion piece lays out all kinds of valid intel that EITs produced. It has a very detailed accounting of what was produced, when, and how.

1. Quit starting more threads on the same topic fagg0t

2. Like I said already, we have become a nation of cowards ready to throw our principles out the window at the first sign of a bogeyman. Your poll only confirms this sad fact. Congrats on being one of the cowards

I'm not sure you have the authority to tell me what I can and can't post.

I'm quite sure you don't have the intellect to stay out of a thread you don't want to be in.

I would be interested to know what percentage of the intel gained is valid. If the majority of what is garnered is good, I would be all for it. But if the vast majority is bogus it seems like you may be stretched thin, investigating all of the crap.

28 percent said they strongly favor them, and 23 percent moderately favored them.

The overall margin of error was +/- 4.0 percentage points.

Also, a much more clear majority also support things like the government monitoring phone calls and emails within our borders. So I guess we shouldn't be concerned about that sort of thing either. :dunno:

I am absolutely not surprised that a majority of people in the US are stupid and ill-informed, thus leading them to the wrong side of an issue.

But thanks for the update, I guess

Interesting spin in this thread.

C'mon fellas, accept the fact the majority of Americans favor saving American lives over not hurting the sensibilities of terrorists.

Yep. But unfortunately for Gore, the majority of his home state didn't want him over Bush, so he didn't become President.

Torture is un-American no matter how afraid the government tells you that you should be.
