2024 NFL Draft Profile - QB Caleb Williams

ok looking at the bad accuracy ones, it looks like hes not getting a proper plant and throw motion on those. I acknowledge the first one (7:10) was partly created by the RB being slow in coming in to take the fake handoff. his arrival later than expected likely prevented him from doing his foot plant to get the ball there on time and the quick flick at the WR was behind him. the second one at 9:56 I wasnt real happy with his foot plant, but something about the throwing motion wasnt quite right. trying to figure out where the mechanics broke down but I've seen a couple of these types now on the tape and its making me think he has some work on his mechanics that needs to be done too. dont get me wrong. theres a lot of good here, but I dont know that I'd want this guy at #1 overall unless you have a real good QB coach and QB development plan. And the Bears are not a team that seems to have good luck developing young QB.

ok in looking at the doug Orth film, he noted that at 0:30 that that was a case of bad decision making. I disagree. receiver was wide open. he had pressure in his face and he floated the ball and it went over his head and was intercepted. its not entirely clear cut because the defender was in his face and prevented him from putting more zip on the ball. At the NFL level that ball likely gets batted at the line so maybe it does fit into decision making. its a bit of a grey area. Though I think accuracy is the more relevant category on that. same with the play at 1:47 of the tape. That may also be accuracy. once again the ball didnt have the zip you necessarily want (likely due to pressure once again) but the ball was behind the WR who then had to slow down and the lack of zip on the ball allowed the defender to close the gap. I think this is also better classified as accuracy though once again at the NFL level, the pressure in his face is likely more substantial and that ball might get picked even if its on target unless there is significant zip on the ball. so maybe it is decision making. its also a grey area. but some of the cases of bad decision making are absolutely brutal. makes me wonder if the bears are dumping their starter to bring in a younger version of the same player. (assuming its caleb they want) I still have lots of tape to go through but just some commentary on what I've seen so far.
  4. well, I wouldnt wanna play for the cards. I feel like that org is a train wreck. so I could see that being the case. Though the cat may already be out of the bag (so to speak) I doubt hes going outside of the top 8 or 10 picks and he could very well be top 5. If the Cards have decided on him already I dont see them changing their mind.
  5. no. both starting WR and the starting, pass catching bell cow all gone, it doesnt look great. I would have at least kept Allen to mentor whoever they decide to draft. you'd like to hope the team knows what they are doing but I am skeptical
  6. yep. you nailed it. in short yardage, if the line gives a good push, he will get you 2-3 yards every time. if you need 4 or 5 yards he likely still gets you 3 yards every time.(maybe 4) Thats the problem with him. of course with Herbert at QB if you are consistently getting 2nd and 7 it opens up more options in the playbook. maybe thats good enough. that is.... assuming Herbert has someone to throw the ball to.

well, I'm going to be looking at tape. but I've read scouting reports from 2 sources and I think what has people intrigued is the skillset. the scouting reports dont actually say it but reading between the lines, he is far from being a finished product in terms of his ability to read, make good, quick decisions etc. normally when I see this on a scouting report I think late first, early 2nd round but people seem to be so sure hes the next Mahomes. flaws in decision making can be fixed with coaching to an extent. but the long time holding the ball is also concerning for me. Granted I dont know if he holds the ball a long time because he can (good protection) or because hes running with the ball. and the scouting report from the cheezy magazine I bought doesnt say. though I'm gonna look at the tape Doug provides of examples of what he speaks of and then I'll look at some independent tape. at that point I'll have a better feel for what this kid is about.

    RB,WR,TE with QB Cousins

not much to argue with here. I 100% agree on London. hes due for a very good year. Robinson will be better too. anytime the offense as a whole is better, the numbers for the RB will also be better. Especially in terms of TD Pitts also better. but Cousins isnt a QB known for utilizing his TE in a way to get top numbers but I do think he will recognize the talent and he will put up draftable numbers for sure.

ok looking at the scout report as noted I dont like that his decision making rating is as low as it is. I also dont like how long he hangs onto the ball. at the NFL level thats trouble. feels like he may be no better than the QB hes replacing in Chicago. granted, reading a scouting report is different than watching him play so I'll try to watch some tape but looking at Doug's analysis of him I'd say hes not as good as I'd like him to be for a #1 overall pick.
  10. I think that was more a stylistic comparable moreso than an actual comparable. he does run sweeps and reverses like Deebo would but he doesnt lineup as a RB like Deebo would (though he may be capable of this) based on the scouting report his pass catching ability looks like it may be better than what deebos is. Hes a lot faster than Deebo ever was.
  11. bottom line, Nabers is more like Deebo. Harrison is more like AJ green (scouting comparable not mine)
  12. Nabers is electric. burst off the ball and out of breaks could leave smoke rings and leaves defenders gasping for oxygen. also smart. sets up opponents with varied releases and altered gaits to leave them vulnerable on critical downs to move the sticks or in the red zone. accelerates in a blink and can beat corners over top simply with his straight line speed. shows great quickness and balance with swift, sure cuts to create space on short and intermediate routes and vs zone coverage just as effective on sweeps and reverses (can run the ball) can move around the formation Weaknesses: there were a couple of key drops on his tape vs alabama and Texas A&M but those looked like he was planning his next move before the ball arrived rather than securing the catch. can be a bit of a freelancer as a route runner. which may take time for his QB to become comfortable with.
  13. scouting report I'm looking at: Harrison: strengths explosion off the line is incredible. immediately handfights at the point of release and cleanly pushes around to get immediate separation. (translation, you wont be able to jam him at the line) Never plays a bad portion of the route staying constantly focused on taking good angles and getting to soft spots in coverage where he can easily have open space to make receptions and work his way downfield. gets to top speed quickly plays and tracks the ball well Weaknesses: frame not particularly rocked up or noteworthy. Not overly muscular and still occasionally gets corralled by weak tackle attempts. does not operate well as a blocker body catches too often and it can prevent him from translating to his after catch ability quickly.
  14. well, its funny. the scouting reports say Harrison, but when I actually read the scouting report the one on Nabers actually looks more desireable in almost all aspects. major difference is nabers will freelance sometimes and go off his route. Harrison is more of a route runner. but will also sometimes make body catches.(negative)

    NFL bans hip drop tackle

hip drop tackle. when someone grabs the runner with both hands or wraps with both arms and then unweights himself by swiveling or dropping his hips and or lower body and landing on and trapping the runners legs at or below the knee. given the nature, I'd say a very low percentage of your tackles would qualify so I dont anticipate this changes the game much (if at all) but I would imagine that this would have a decent chance of causing an achilles injury if you are landing on the back of the runners legs
