N. Cali Fires

Recommended Posts

14 fires going on since 10 pm last night. 0% contained so far. All local channels are preempting regular programming. Some areas look like the apocalypse! Napa, Sonoma, Calistoga, Santa Rosa and other areas all on fire. Min so far 1500 structures destroyed, 4 burn victims and counting. Definitely smell it here in the Bay Area, and my windows are closed. It's a little windy here so some is getting through crevices. Asking for people to stay off the roads so responders can do their jobs.

Hope everyone in those areas get to shelters and stay safe..

Bier Meister is in that area, he reported on FB a few minutes ago that he is OK for now but prepared to evacuate.

Any other Geeks in that area?

T&Ps, hope it works out.

it's big and spread quickly, like sux' crabs in tijuana. we gathered our important documents, photo albums, clothes, and computers. took video of our possessions should we need it for insurance. no evacuation yet, but we are ready. i was just looking around the house realizing that there is a chance we may not see everything else again. much we can replace, but we have many things that we have gotten from places we have traveled over the past 28 or so years ....

You'll be in my family's thoughts, T's & P's.

Have a brother in Sacramento, he knows your area well.

So sad to see a man trying to stave off flames from his home with 2 garden hoses. I hope he gets out. :( Is the 5th worst fire in CA's history now and it's not over. 10 confirmed deaths.

Can't imagine. Praying you will not need to be evacuated and everything will be ok. xxx

Temps to cool some but still near or a bit above 80 for the next couple of days up there. No rain for the next 7 days. More areas haven been burned than the entire size of Oakland.. :(

My area seems to be settling a bit and is offering resources to the towns north and east of us. There was a random spread to the south of us, but that was contained 100%. Safe for the moment.

Glad to hear. That had to have been scary. Hopefully the shift happening right now doesn't bring it back in your direction.

MTSki, yes, fine in Sac. Only know people who know people impacted.

From about 3 until about 6 there were quite a few evacuation notices... Still north of us, but has us on alert. Moderate worry level.

Hope you remain safe and don't need to evacuate. Have a friend up there who was forced to leave and doesn't know the status of the home yet. Just can't imagine. It's been a crazy fall so far here. Labour Day weekend we had those unprecedented never seen in the bay area temps of 106 that lasted a few days. Those are typically inland temps, not bay area where we are much cooler with the breeze off the bay. Now we have these fires that have spread so badly due to the strong high wind changes that are all less than 10% contained. Grapes not affected by the fire itself have been affected by smoke, and will be tastable in wines.

Minor recession coming up there with tourism, unemployment and wine unfortunately.

5th deadliest fire in CA history so far. Winds are expected to pick up later today, double digits, in some areas up there up to 50 mph tonight.

Here's the latest: 17 confirmed dead, more than 100 still unaccounted for, more than 2K structures destroyed, 115k acres:

Yes Mike, I am now in the East Bay in Fremont off of Mission near Niles Canyon. Its a nice area of Fremont and quiet too. Plus it's close to Washington Hospital and my docs where I frequent.

Keep us posted. Sending you and yours well wishes. xxx

Windy here in the East Bay. Skies are now hazy and the smell of smoke is strong. No opening windows for fresh air today. :(

Just as I typed this, here is an article on how fallen ash and the smell have reached my area, Fremont.

They are calling this the deadlist firestorm in 26 years.. Winds picking up, it's raining ash up there, new communities could be in danger.

I was scheduled earlier today for my 6 week apt with my ortho regarding my shoulder... in sonoma. they were closed yesterday and i could not get through. tried again this morning when their office is supposed to open. different msg, but still could not get through. i drove over (not know which roads would be closed). they were open for business. while i was checking in, the receptionist got a call that her area was being evacuated. it was more hazy than where i live and there was ash in the air. i did not see any destruction on my way. we are still in limbo, checking firemaps and evacuation notices.

I heard on the news that yesterday because of winds, the fire spread the length of a football field every 3 seconds. Yikes

The worry is tonight that the fires could merge and really become an inferno with the winds on tap. Calistoga has been completely evacuated right now. It's not over and they are saying we could have a major round 2 tonight..

First is getting people out of harms way by helping in evacuations, not saving property or containing the fires. Next, when the winds kick up to 50 mph or more, you can't fight fires under those conditions. It's not the # of men, not aircraft or anything like that. Plenty of resources and more coming. So yeah, they are doing all they can considering the horrible weather conditions up there which the fires love.
