David Patten retires from football

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 31, 2010 10:01 AM ET

Patriots training camp started with the surprise retirement of wide receiver David Patten.

Out of football last year, Patten tried to re-charge his career this offseason with New England, but training camp proved to be too much for him.

Patten was a long shot to make the roster, but Bill Belichick said Saturday he was having a good camp.

"A truly great career," Bill Belichick said, in emotional, heartfelt comments, calling him one of the hardest workers he's been around. "He's meant a lot to this team, going back to '01, '02, '03 -- the toughness and attitude he brought to this team in a quiet way."

Patten, once who worked in a coffee bean factory before his pro career started, signed for very little money as a free agent in New England in 2001. He wound up starting for the team, catching touchdowns in the 2001 AFC Championship game and Super Bowl against the Rams.

Yesterday at practice, Brady threw him a perfect ball down the left sideline that went right through PatteRn's hands. I said to my kids, "That is the end of David Patten in the NFL". He just did not have anything left in the tank and the Pats have some pretty good young WR's that he would have taken snaps away if he stuck around longer in camp. The writing was on the wall.

Forget what year, what game but I remember him catching, running and throwing a TD in the same game....and I started him at flex that game....ya, right. That was definately his pro & fantasy highpoint.

He'll have to grab a seat on the bench next to Stephen Davis.
