Finally got Netflix. Dont like sci fi, fantasy, action or gratuitous violence. Like movies that make you think a little, and dont necessarily have happy endings. Some of my favorite movies include American Beauty, Life is Beautiful, No Country for Old Men, A Clockwork Orange and A Serious Man. I also liked Breaking Bad, the first couple seasons of Dexter, and the first of Stranger Things.

Any suggestions?

There is a Tom Petty doc that is 4 hours long. I like Tom and all but 4 hours ??

Runnin' Down A Dream and it's excellent.Starts with Tom being around 10 years old and the affect meeting Elvis had on him and takes off from there, how he met each of the Heartbreakers, all of his former bands including Mudcrutch, the MTV era,The Traveling Wilburys etc.Cannot recommend this one high enough.

Black Mirror

Imposters

Fringe (not sure if its on there anymore)

Mindhunters

It Follows

The Imitation Game

Twin Peaks

Memento

The Prestige

Blue Ruin

Master of None

The Talented Mister Ripley

The Returned (French version, not American)

Top of the Lake

A Ghost Story on Amazon Prime

The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime

The other thing is rate em thumbs up or thumbs down after watching. Netflix is fairly decent at predicting movies and shows youll like once youve got enough ratings in.

Thanks for the suggestions. Speaking of dystopian stuff, the Lobster is a recent movie I really liked. Someone also suggested Requiem for a Dream, though I don't think it is on Netflix.

Not sure whats on Netflix vs not but the director of Three Billboards has two movies I really loved in the past few years: In Bruges and The Guard.

Theres a German movie called The Silence on Netflix, sort of a mystery/drama about a child rape murder, that was awesome. Not graphic but very strong content.

Although I like my rape-murder on the subtle side, your standards for graphic are probably a bit higher than mine.

There is no on screen violence and the movie is mostly a drama, but I understand the subject matter may not be appealing. I think fans of The Vanishing would really appreciate it.

I like disturbing concepts, just not in-your-face bloody stuff getting sodomized.

Requiem is in my top 10 films ever list but fair warning it's a deep dark journey into a world you cannot wait to get the hell out of and once you do you'll probably feel ill and hopeless for a bit after.

That I can deal with. Don't like storybook endings.

Then you may like The Silence. Its far less graphic than Requiem for a Dream.

FWIW here's an excerpt from one of my favorite reviews of the film that's as in your face as the actual movie.

this film should be REQUIRED VIEWING by every friggin High School kid in the country. It should be unleashed upon them.

Will it disturb them? Will it shake their fragile little minds? Will it possibly make a lifestyle change for them?

Oh God YES. YES YES YES.

This movie is brutal... brutal in the most aggressively harsh reality moments we have in society.

You theater owners keeping kids out of the film from attending with their parents..... YOU SHOULD BE HUNG FROM THE NECK TILL FOCKING DEAD! Watch the movie in your theater. WATCH IT! Watch the whole film. Don’t look at a single moment... take it out of context... and then say, “A 15 year old can’t handle this!”

Darren Aronofsky has made a film that makes use of everything that Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Danny Boyle, Stephen Soderbergh, David Fincher and Tom Tykwer have used to redefine ‘cool’ cinema... Every pulse skip.... split screen.... frame shake.... tracking perspectives.... fisheye worldviews... trippy music... grand dialogue... And he’s gone and made a hardcore John Schlesinger MIDNIGHT COWBOY meets Martin Scorsese TAXI DRIVER world. This is cool meeting HARSH REALITY.

This describes most Darren Aronofsky films and all Gaspar Noe films. Nonetheless I like both directors.

Lars Von Trier belongs in that category as well.

Not much in it for the ladies, unless Robert Pattinson really wets her knickers (hes actually pretty good in it)

I will catch it. Super Dark Times is the other one I have really wanted to see on Netflix or Prome but she has no interest.

I just watched the documentary series Dirty Money. It's really good, with six episodes about greed in business. The VW, pharmaceutical company and Payday loan episodes are the best.

Not great movies but pretty good for Netflix...

Kill the Irishman, based on a true story Irish and Italian gangsters in Cleveland. Bunch of familiar actors in this although never seen the main actor before.

Small Town Crime, disgraced former cop tried to find redemption, stars John Hawkes (Kenny Powers brother from eastbound & down)

I've skimmed by that a couple of times - gonna watch now.

Saw your list earlier - True Detective (S1) has to be on there for you - I'm guessing you've seen it but it's a must watch based on what you've posted.

Catch Me if You Can is probably a great fit too - smart, no graphic violence, etc.

And no, I have no idea if either are on Netflix right now.

Never seen True Detective.

season 1 - NOT season 2.

it's a masterpiece of flawed characters on a very dark journey - a fantastic rollup of great dialogue, creepiness, crime, and depth - I can't focking believe you haven't seen it - wish I could unwatch it to see it again new.

this thread made me start re-watching True Detective S1 - I forgot so many of the little details - the writing/dialogue is fantastic and the "feel" of the whole show is immersive, everything from the music, camera angles, grain/color of the film... you can feel the tension, turmoil, and ever present ominousness, they've masterfully cooked it all into the show - kinda like the original Alien was able to build in the cold, emptiness of outer space with lighting, sound, color, music, dialogue, etc.

pen - I think Rust Cohle may end up being one of your favorite TV characters of all time.
