About that time again - Hits and Misses

Recommended Posts

Since we have a ton of time to kill before the supplemental kicks off (I think we are waiting until Monday March 19th or possibly even the 26th)

Got

David Price - bitter sweet. My top target by a decent margin with Wade Davis in Colorado. Just needed to be ahead of Toronto, I think, as Boston likely had better options so the first overall pick was not at all needed.

Jake Odorizzi - total meh player but changing teams to a better offense could help

Carlos Gomez - another meh (going to be a trend), still has power and speed if he stays healthy?

Hechavarria - boring as hell but I was out of SS eligible options

Fernando Rodney - love him but could easily lose his job if he starts slow. Slow start in '17 with ARI before being lights out. Started lights out in '16 w/ SD.

Matt Moore - garbage pick. Think I lost more than a few guys I was interested in between 5.1 and 6.14 and I just randomly picked a guy.

Mallex Smith - young, upside, speed. With an injury prone outfield, he felt like the right pick

Sergio Romo - List was getting slim and he showed well last year.

James Shields - Literally saw his stat line today and know he is in line for as many starts as he can stay healthy for. Sticks with my annual trend of loading up on a crap ton of mediocre SP depth.

........ doesn't really feel like I HIT on anything to be perfectly honest. There was almost never a moment where I found myself saying "YES" they passed on my guy! Maybe 2 minor moments

1. CMH taking Ervin Santana despite injury when I was really pegging him for Odorizzi

2. BC not taking Rodney late 4th. 3.1 was too early for me but Rodney felt like a 4th rounder so I was mildly pleased.

Missed

......For a team with such little shared talent as the Rays, you wouldn't think i'd get sniped so often like a Boston, Texas, Cleveland, etc. but jeez.

Wade Davis - with the draft order set, I pretty much knew he wasn't making it past round 2. My only chance was KC landing Greinke and me picking after KC.

Tim Beckham - really didn't expect him to go in round 2. Honestly thought the 4/5 turn or mayyyyybe using my 3rd on him just based on having so long between picks. I think some other players popping put him on Mookz radar earlier than expected.

Logan Forsythe - looking good this spring. If he returns to his Tampa form of 2015-2016, I'm really going to regret not grabbig him at my 4/5 turn, especially having been told I could have waited on Hechavarria. <_<

Nate Eovaldi - he usually kind of sucks but hes still showing elite velocity. Id be a little more disappointed if he wasnt another Tampa starter.

Asdrubal Cabrera - not that he's any good but I had him pegged as my second best SS eligible player after Beckham

CJ Cron - never really went after him. nothing against him but with Myers and Morrison already at 1st, it felt like too much of a luxury pick. I suppose I could have opeted for Cron over Mallex Smith but I felt my team was lacking speed more than average pop. Now watch Cron hit 35 homers.

Tommy Hunter - Just didn't line up and I knew the Cubs were snagging him.

Kazmir - didn't even think about him until today at work. I'll be rooting for him either way.

..... I guess on the bright side, the only one I could have really done anyting about was Forsythe.

..... I lost others (Zobrist, Bautista, Hammel, Matt Joyce) but while they were on my list, I really wasn't going after any of them.

hah! im not going that in depth but good read.

i missed on a LOT of closers. expected to miss Davis but really didn't think Vizcaino and Morrow would both be gone by my 3rd round pick. guess that happens when you pick at the bottom. so i settled for Blake Parker and whatever he amounts to. hopefully he keeps the job or at leasts gets more save chances than other options in la la land.

i also missed on Darvish who was my top option and did not expect to have all 3 of my next choices available at the 13th pick. so that was a pleasant surprise but also a tough decision. Rich Hill won out for diversification purposes and Lester slightly edged Arrieta due to me liking Lester more and Arrieta being in limbo. if he winds up on the Nationals or something, i may regret it.

didn't really miss many other targets and wound up drafting way more guys on my list than i thought would still be available such as Heyward, Chatwood, Martin and even Valbuena who isnt sexy but gives corner infield depth. for some reason i had Tommy Hunter targetted over Pedro Strop. possibly stupid but i have so many Cubbies.

Wellington Castillo would have been nice but a total luxury pick. Dexter Fowler as well. Fowler would have been my top outfield choice but pitching was the priority. hopefully one of the buttload of other outfielders i did end up with meterializes into something.

No, that happens because the Braves dont really have much of a pool to choose from. :D

Misses

Price - Obviously once the order was set I knew, unless the Rays just had enough SP, to go another direction but with no one else really besides Wade Davis available to him in the top 200...yeah

Leone - Didn't think he'd go round 2, so I had no chance. A possible closer, certainly a holds guy. While at this point there are a blut of RP available to me, I wasn't concerned but just shocked a guy high on that list was gone so soon.

Grichuk - lambert totally raided me on that first turn.

Smoak - Only because Grichuk had been taken did I need to go OF with at least Encarnacion and Thames already at 1B but I really would have taken Smoak at 3 otherwise. But I didn't, so I lost him.

Gomes - Just waited too long. Had so many holes to fill a backup catcher for me, not knowing if he's starting or backup himself but he'd of looked good on my sqaud.

Reyes - I never expect to get him just because NY has so few options it seems but man a guy with potentially 4 positions would have been great to have. He does get on base and can contribute some speed.

Diaz - I screwed this one. I hoped he'd drop just a bit more. Tulo is the starter. I also have Solarte so I have SS but with Tulo hurt (shocker) to start the season, I may not have the everyday guy without Diaz on my team. May need to look for a trade now or be missing chances to have stats at the SS position depending on the lineup card for the Jays day to day.

Garcia - Had a chance to fill the entire Jays rotation but just couldn't get him before the Braves ran out of 5th starters to draft.

others; Bautista, Cabrera, Morales, Pearce, Hechavarria, Liriano, Dickey, Davis. Lots a solid potential here but too much unknown with them. Mostly backups I figured. Hecha a sure starter that I was waiting just because of the lack of offensive production history and Pearce vs Valencia was a coin toss.

Hits

Encarncion - With the decision made for me, I'm almost glad I got who should be a solid 1B option. Even if he DHs most of the time for CLE he'll hit and less chances for injury maybe.

Morrow - I actually had an opporunity for 2 closers with this pick. First time in forever I think going into the season. The fact that it's for a top team, if he can get and keep that role, just be really good for my team.

Granderson - Maybe my least "get" as it was earlier maybe than I wanted by a round or 2 but again, with Grichuk taken I felt I didn't want to chance losing both stating corner OF for my team.

Martin - I needed a C so he was more assured a starting gig than Gomes I think even if I reached a bit as he is not the Martin from 6 years ago or so.

Dyson - Really happy to get this setup guy in that new SF bullpen.

Happ - At this point i was looking to get all the Jays starters and I knew with the depth HOU had this might be a tough get but round 5... really excited.

Valencia - Reyes, Pearce and this guy were all close. Reyes edged them out due to flexibility of position but with a rotating lineup it seems today in BAL he could win a bunch of ABs if his production is what is was before last season.

Rasmus - He was lower on my list but as it looked like he's have a starting role, he could potentially put up some decent power numbers. So if he turns out to be a 4th (or 5th) OF for me, I'll feel pretty good about that.

Overall pleased so far. I think I gave my team a chance and not having exact superstars to even look for after the first 2 made it about role filling and preparing for what IS available at least in the supplemental.

Hit

Andrew Miller - with Shaw off to Colorado, the two of them should make holds an area of strength

Asdrubal Cabrera - not particularly good stats wise, but useful to have a player with multi-position eligibility on a different team to cover off days

Misses

Jay Bruce/Edwin Encarnacion - draft position successfully d*cked me out of both primary sources for home runs on this team

Rich Hill - another first round loss, the only relevant non-Indians starting pitcher available to me

Tommy Hunter - minor loss, was planning to take him along with Albers before losing him a pick away. Probably don't need him to handle holds anyway.

Misses:

J.D. Martinez - As soon as 29Guests rolled ahead of me I knew he was gone.

Kimbrel - Likewise with Burt rolling ahead of me.

Beltre - Lost by default because I took Cespedes in round 1. I knew he would be gone to Mora in Round 1 or 2.

Price - Knew either GB or WW would be taking him before it came to my turn.

From there I lost several others because of the roll really. Hill & Lester on the turn to dcb and Miller to Zero before it came back around as well.

Hits:

Cespedes - Was the best on my Top 300 board so I had to take him. Hopefully he can keep his attitude in check this year.

Melancon - I think this is year 3 or 4 year in a row of grabbing him before 29Guests. Has worked out well every time until last year. Hoping for a rebound year for him.

Reddick - Was thinking 29Guests would have grabbed him before I had the chance to in Round 3 so this was a win for me. Really solidified my OF.

Ramirez - Kind of fell to me based on Teds draft board I guess which was good for me since I am very limited to options at 1B.

Reed - Should have a decent number of Holds and maybe some save opportunities in MIN.

Lowire - With Pedroia starting the season on the DL most likely it was nice to grab a spare 2B this late. Thanks 29Guests for forgetting about him :)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my draft. A little short on SP but I have a couple of options to rotate in and out still and the Sup Draft of course.

Grabbing Leone so early was only because I had a pat starting 8 and a full 5 man starting rotation before the draft even started. The Cardinals have no true closer and Leone looks like he has a great path for the role. I couldnt afford to lose him. Grichuk was just because he was the best player available that has the potential for 25 HRs for me.

Misses: Quite a few...

Nelson Cruz: I figured he was gone to Mookz as soon as I saw the draft order, but I had a higher need at SP so I'm happy with Darvish instead (except he used to be exclusive...so still bitter).

Ian Kinsler: I was hoping he lasted to the late third round, but BC snagged him early. (another exclusive gone this season...)

Shin-Soo Choo: Surprised to see him go in the early second round. I likely wouldn't have considered him until the fourth.

Carlos Gomez: I expected to lose him to TB or NYM just due to depth, but think he'll have a great rebound season.

Adrian Gonzalez: I really would have considered him, even with Gallo/Smoak/Davis.

Darren O'Day: I was targeting him. The guy continues to be a beast. But I figured I had the depth at RP that I'd be okay. That is until...

Sam Dyson goes at 7.06

Pedro Strop goes at 7.08

Tommy Hunter goes at 7.13 (I would have taken him at 7.11 instead of Soria, and still grabbed Soria in the 8th, but I screwed up and drafted a guy already drafted. Doh!)

Matt Moore, Miles Mikolas, Brandon McCarthy, and RA DIckey: Not too worried about, though I would have loved to have grabbed one for depth.

Leonys Martin: I kept bypassing him just due to my current OF options. I think he could have a good season in Detroit.

HITS:

Zack Greinke: Always battling Ted and cmh for the higher dice roll to get Greinke. Certainly some wear on the tires, but he can still dominate.

Ian Kinsler: Hate this mother focker (2009 In Arlington he tells the Angels to "Get the fock off our field" after a Rangers win) and hated having to take him so high in the draft, but Segura doesn't qualify at 2B for me any longer. And the Angels have trotted crap out at 2B ever since Howie left.

Kendrys Morales: Getting old, but still provides some much needed pop.

Darren O'Day: I always suffer with my bullpen, so I was stoked to get O'Day this year.

Jhoulys Chacin: Thought for sure Burt was going to take him in the 8th. Good value for round 9.

MISSES:

Justin Upton: I knew Burt would grab him when I took Greinke, but I figured I could fill that hole in the supp.

Ervin Santana: cmh snagged him right before my pick in the 2nd. Jerkface!

Rich Hill: Seeing as he qualifies for like half our league, there was no way he was coming back to me.

Fernando Rodney: Once again a player gets taken with the pick before mine. You jagass WW!!!

Blake Parker: Didn't do my homework on him as I had him on my exclusive list. You bastard dcb!

Tyler Chatwood: See above

Howie Kendrick: Even though he's not a starter, he still hits for average and puts up decent numbers. Every year Ted passes on him. I thought this year was the same, but then he takes him with his last pick. You son of a b1tch, Ted!

David Hernandez: Waited too long on him. Was ready to pull the trigger in the 10th, but Mookz said otherwise. Eat sh1t Mookz!!!

weird time for the Royals. Seems like ima have a new batch of exclusives leading the way next year, and guys I have tried to land over the years (Beltran, Bautista, dye, Damon) are making way for guys who will be eligible for other teams . At least guys we will fight over helped us win a WS in the process :dunno:

Greinke was about the only guy in doing my research that maybe hurt a little. Otherwise I probably have the best guys I could have at this point and am relying on some help in the supplemental.

Salvy, Hosmer, Moustakas, and Escobar are the best I have available at their respective positions and all were exclusive to me. Obviously short is my weakest link, but I hate going into the supplemental thinking I have to upgrade at a specific position.

I didn't care a ton for my OF options. Soler could break out this year so that one could hurt. My next best options were probably Bautista and Cabrera but those buttheads still haven't landed with a team. I don't feel confident trying to compete with everyone else relying on Cain, Bonifacio, Gordon, Orlando, and Jay. I guess both Merrifield and Zobrist are options for my OF too so perhaps both them could have good years.

I figured with my second pick it was either Santana or Odorizzi, and probably made the right pick assuming he can stay healthy. Did I get Nate Karns? I don't think I did, but I might be most optimistic about him aside from Duffy in the rotation. Hammel and Kennedy are hopeful innings eaters, where I feel Junis and Karns have the most upside at the back end of the rotation. If Ricky Nolasco pitches for the big league club this year we are in trouble but we could see some arms come up from the minors this year who hopefully will be good for my Homer's team in future years.

Seems the Royals always have a strong bullpen and I have a lot of guys available to me. Getting Davis, Holland and Herrera though doesn't leave many roster spots available to be competitive in holds though.

Can we have three supplemental picks? All I need is SS, OF and SP. TIA

You did get karns he was on my list but I don't know that I would have actually ended up picking him although that may have been a mistake
