Paging Dr Pen - Claritin

Recommended Posts

Any thoughts on long term side effects of Claritin on children?

My son seems to be doing ok with the new hypo allergenic puppy, but all 3 of his best friends have cats and/or non hypo dogs. Whenever he goes over there, he comes back sneezing his head off and scratching his eyes unless he takes Claritin beforehand.

One of the kids has 3 cats and a dog. My son even sneezes whenever that kid comes to our house. I assume its becaue the pet dander is stuck to the kid. Or he could be allergic to his friends.

Anyway, I dont like giving my kids any medicine unless its absolutley necessary, but he seems to need it. Any dangers of prolonged occasional Claritin use?

The internets say no big deal, but I dunno.

No long term problems as far as I am aware. Acutely, it dries out your mucous membranes and makes you feel a little medicine headed.

After posting this, I considered whether I should trust any advice you give regarding keeping a child healthy and alive.

Seriously. Happy Holidays and thanks for taking time to respond.

I take Zyrtec daily and have not had any issues. My mind is like a child's.

Also, my kids often take allergy meds (one takes Claritin and the other takes Zyrtec) and their physicians have indicated that there are no known side effects of long-term use in children.

My kid (6yo) has terrible allergies. Enough that they kick off frequent migraines during the bad seasons (early/late spring, early fall). We took him to an allergy specialist and he's on:

  • Claritin once daily
  • Prescription Zyrtec once daily
  • And some sublingual drops that are supposed to "retrain" his immune system over time to lessen his allergies once a day

He's been on these for about 18 months and it has helped a ton. We went from around 40 migraines/year to between 5-10.
