Per Mike Garafolo on Twitter...

The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis.

Guarantee is unknown at this time. If Jimmy G. actually gets this, Kirk Cousins is going to bank even more.

I read somewhere that ATL QB M. Ryan's deal is up soon - and the Owner *expects* Ryan to take a below-market deal (a la Tom Brady), so ATL can spend $$$ elsewhere to strengthen the team / win Championships.  THAT will be an interesting contract, being that ATL's DEF cost Ryan his first ring..

True, but the irony is that Jimmy will probably have a better career than Kirk (Kurt?).  Cousins might be flirting with 30M annually now.

Cousins has thrown for over 4000 plus yards and 25 plus tds and has completed 67% and has a 81/36 TD to int ratio his last three seasons, playing on a team that really didn't want him.

Jimmy better hurry up if he's going too probably be better.

He's three years younger than Cousins and if he had been drafted by (almost) any other team besides N.E., he'd already have an impressive resume.

No way you can confirm that.

So it's not true.

One might think he would have, but there is no facts to back that up.

Thank you for the reply.

Agreed.

They sure do, and I think he should also.

But too say he would have already been successful in the NFL too this point if he was drafted my another team is a shot in the dark.

There is no way too confirm that, or too back that up with facts.

No one isn't say that he might not be successful, I don't know heck he might be the next Brady, or Ryan Leaf.

Now about the money, teams have been wrong pleanty of times.

Thanks for the reply.

Success has a huge part to do with coaching. Have a coach that destests the forward pass, and your team has a sub par oline? You aren't going to have much success

More contract details via ESPN...

The Niners announced Thursday they have signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year contract extension through the 2022 season. Sources confirmed to ESPN the deal is for $137.5 million, including $90 million guaranteed in the first three years, making it the largest three-year total in NFL history.

The deal makes Garoppolo, 26, the league's highest-paid player despite having just seven NFL starts to his name. The deal's average annual value of $27.5 million per season is the largest in NFL history, $500,000 more per season than the previous high reached last year by Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford.

well, I think it was irresponsible to give a contract out of that size to a player with 5 career starts (or is it 6?)

This almost feels like an Osweiler thing repeating itself.

While I think he's better than Osweiler was, I do not think he has done anything to earn this kind of money.

Jimmy Garoppolo is due $42.6 million in the first year of his five-year, $137.5 million contract.

The 49ers have nearly $80 million in available cap space, so it makes sense for them to front-load Garoppolo's contract. Garoppolo will then earn $18.6 million in 2019 before taking home another $25.2 million in 2020. It's a huge financial commitment for a player who's made just seven career starts.

Holy carp!!!  I *wish* this was announced still in-season.  I'd have LOVED to have seen Boomer Esiason have a heart attack while discussing this.

Kind of shows the desparation teams have to land a franchise QB. The real good ones last a long time. Time will tell.

The cap has been going up every year for teams and it makes it hard to put new contracts in clear perspective with other contracts signed in earlier years.

This is a huge deal by any standards, not saying its not, but if its not already out there I'd love to see someone effort to figure out the largest contracts by percentage of cap at the time of signing. I think percentage of cap is a better way to look at the commitment to the player and salary trends positionally too.

Indeed. JG showed better than Oz in his limited action though, and I duh that Shanny/Lynch took baby steps with him after the trade.

He's got the building believing in him and even of he pulls 8-8 next year I think the brass will be happy.

9ers have a lot of work to do to on both sides of the ball, but the arrow is pointing up.

Went 6-1 in the final 7 games and completely turned the franchise around.

Beat 3 playoffs team during that stretch too.

In 3 years, it's going to look like a bargain.

In 3 years, it's going to look like a bargain.

honestly, you havnt seen a large enough sample sizes.

lots of QB's come in and get success early, until teams figure out how to defend them.  At that point the QB needs to adjust their game to stay on top.   the successful ones stay, the unsuccessful ones do not.

Garoppolo hasnt reached that point and while the early returns have been good, you have to keep in mind that the teams he beat didnt exactly have a lot of film on him to look at and develop a game plan.

it may turn out ok it may not, but when you have that much cash involved if he's not a top 5 QB it will be considered a failure.

That's an awful lot of pressure to put on a young man.

I still think the signing was irresponsible.   They would have been better off to franchise him and make him prove he's worth the contract.

I suppose there is the fear of the cousins situation, but if he turns out to be a poor performer, this will cost the team substantially more.

I can’t disagree with a single thing you’ve said.  But my optimism over Garoppolo is not just about his record and his stats in the small sample we’ve seen. It’s that he also looks very similar to a young Aaron Rodgers.  He seems to have the ability to make strong, accurate throws which just the flick of his wrist.  Again, only time will tell.

I still think the signing was irresponsible.   They would have been better off to franchise him and make him prove he's worth the contract.

I suppose there is the fear of the cousins situation, but if he turns out to be a poor performer, this will cost the team substantially more.

This isn't a kid that came out of school and ask to turn a dead franchise around.

3 years under Brady and got all the necessary tools including the good looks.

To get the perfect a@@, you need to do the perfect squat.

It's okay, go ahead and take a closer look at that a@@ of mine in my profile.

I just don't understand how you sign him to this type of a contract.  I mean couldn't you offer to make him the 2nd highest paid QB ever?  Is he going to turn it down?

I doubt Brady had anything to do with it. All the other backups under him didn't seem to pick anything up. Imo, either you have it, or you don't, with a select few who can really improve under the right coach.
