Dad's Plea to School: Ban Unvaccinated Kids to Save My Son's Life

Recommended Posts

No unvaccinated kid should even be allowed in school. What you do with your kid is your thing. When you being stupid effects my kid it becomes my thing. If my kid gets some preventable disease from your kid I am beating asss on an epic scale.

California dad Carl Krawitt has asked his 6-year-old sons school to take an unusual step in the fight against measles: Require all students to be fully vaccinated, despite the fact that 7 percent of them are exempt because of their parents personal beliefs. Krawitt made the request of the school, Reed Elementary in Tiburon, because his son Rhett just won a long battle with leukemia, leaving him immune compromised and unable to get vaccinated as he recovers.

"Its very emotional for me," Krawitt, who could not be reached by Yahoo Parenting, told NPR. If you choose not to immunize your own child and your own child dies because they get measles, OK, thats your responsibility, thats your choice. But if your child gets sick and gets my child sick and my child dies, then your action has harmed my child.

Rhett lives in Marin County, Calif., a county with the highest rate of personal exemptions in the Bay Area 6.45 percent and among the highest in the state, which has an average 2.5 percent exemption rate. At Reed, the rate is 7 percent. The exemptions allow parents to legally send their children to school unvaccinated. But with only 93 percent of students vaccinated, the power of herd immunity requiring a 92 to 94 percent vaccination rate for measles could be compromised.

"When your immune system isnt working as well, it allows many different infections to be worse," Rhetts oncologist, Dr. Robert Goldsby, told NPR. "Its not just Rhett. There are hundreds of other kids in the Bay Area that are going through cancer therapy, and its not fair to them. They cant get immunized; they have to rely on their friends and colleagues and community to help protect them."

Its why Krawitt and his wife, Jodi, have emailed the districts superintendent, Steven Herzog, requesting that the district require immunization as a condition of attendance, with the only exception being those who cannot medically be vaccinated.

According to NPR, Herzog answered the Krawitts with the following email: We are monitoring the situation closely and will take whatever actions necessary to ensure the safety of our students.

Marin County currently has no confirmed or suspected cases of measles. And while unvaccinated children in California are required to stay home for the entire incubation period during any contagious-disease outbreak in their school (21 days for measles), there is no precedent for excluding unvaccinated students when there are no confirmed cases of a disease, according to Marin County Public Health Officer Matt Willis.

Herzog reiterates the stay-at-home requirements to Yahoo Parenting through an email, adding, Legally we believe it would require the County Health Officer to make the call and we then would follow the directive. I have explained this to Carl and his wife Jody.

Willis tells Yahoo Parenting, I see the fathers request as a prompt to have important conversations as a community regarding our ethical obligations to one another. So while the Krawitts request to the school might not be going anywhere right now, he adds, it is going somewhere as far as stimulating discussions.

Mexico has a much higher child vaccination rate than america. The rest of central and south america for the most part has a slightly higher rate.

This problem was creates by ret@rds here in the good old usa.

so your contention is that the illigal undocumented children bussed in by the 100s were all vaccinated ? Who mentioned mexico ?

Its just a coincidence that these diseases are now spreading like wild fire in the exact locations that the illigals were placed.

Got it.

You sure to bend over backwards a lot to defend this administration. This one I'd say you're pretty wrong on.

actually these diseases are popping up in places that have affluent populations with some school systems having up to 7% unvaccinated kids. In this case I would say you are wrong.

And you hacks have been rolling with this...the undocumented kids brought all this disease.

Yet can never back up such a claim...ever.

This thread had nothing to do with Obama...nothing.

Yet you made it about him with your ignorant rantings that are nothing but righty talking points.

Why? Because you are a hack and rightfully called one.

Unlike calling someone a hack because they believe the pats may have tampered with footballs.

The issue is:

1. The Jenny McCarthy types - Americans who are brainwashed into thinking Vaccines are bad when in fact they are one of the greatest medical advances since....well....ever.

2. Illegals - Yes, this is correct. Not because they don't vaccinate kids in Mexico. It's because when they come here illegally they have a hard time documenting if they've been vaccinated so its hard to know and also illegals born here, to illegal parents, don't go to the doctor and don't get their kids properly vaccinated here in America....because they are here illegally. Same reason a lot don't go get a drivers license. It's not because they can't drive or couldn't get one in Mexico.

Read it...correlation (based on this guy's opinions) does not equal causation...especially since there is zero data to really show they are bringing it here.

And again...thhis thread had zero to do with Obama...and you made it about that.

Its sad and pathetic and not at all unexpected from a hack like you.

How did I defend the administration with my post. Please point out the exact phrase I use, because I want to edit that out of my post since I vehemently disagree with this administration's immigration policy.

Thread should be about moronic parents who listen to random sites on the internet and B-list celebrities instead of doctors and dozens of research studies. Instead, political retard slapfight (tl;dr - just another day in the Geek Club).

Correct.

I do think there is an illegal alien angle though that is valid. However it has little to do with Obama, its been an issue for decades.

Meh ...I thought the recent massive deliberate influx of undocumented illigals might have had something to do with it.

Little did I know they were all vaccinated before they got here.

Like I said, learn something new everyday.

Warning conservative hack web site alert.

Have an open mind, read and learn. There's real data and stats in there, or keep your heads in the sand and deny reality, whichever floats your boat.

http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/01/24/measles-2015-outbreak-map-compared-to-2014-enterovirus-d68-outbreak-map-the-similarity-is-obvious/

While any unvaccinated child can promote outbreaks, do you really think illegal Central/South American immigrants are responsible for most cases? Look at this map: http://www.cfr.org/interactives/GH_Vaccine_Map/#map

Hint: How many circles are in Central and South America?

The anti-vaccine lawyers worked hard to get that religious exemption law put into the books. Now, that they've succeeded in putting in a loophole, the anti-vaccine crowd preaches to anyone interested in not vaccinating their kids to use it.

I watched my brother's GF's (B) 8 year old daughter suffer with whooping cough for like 2 months because her nutjob sister not only wouldnt get her son immunized, she lied to two daycares about it, exposing the kids, staff, and families of the kids and staff of three schools to the whooping cough (she eventually found a nutjob daycare that didnt require immunizations). Eventually the government paid for medicine for about 300 people all so her little snowflake wouldnt "get autism".

I dont act all confrontational on the internet and stuff often, but if you are an anti vaxxer, you are an idiot. An idiot who has been duped by fraudulent science. There is no argument. The video the GoGary's posted upthread nails it.

If somebody in the Disneyland measles outbreak either is or has a child that is ineligible for vaccination like the son in the OP's story, I hope they sue the focking hell out of the anti-vax parents, support group and community.

Meanwhile, if all of the measles kids at Disneyland belong to anti-vax parents - well wouldn't that be appropriate.

As asinine as I find the belief, I can live with the religious exemption. But it's definitely been badly abused so that actual religious objections are the vast minority.

Hacks never let a crisis go to waste.

Every time something bad happens even not remotely related to him, Obummer is found to be responsible in some way. But it doesn't cut both ways, it's very selective. When bin Laden is located or the economy picks up, of course in that case it must be made clear that Obummer had nothing to do with it.

Yup, I will definitely believe this one doctor, addressing issues outside his scope of practice, presenting ZERO evidence of vaccines being harmful. The fact that almost the entire argument he made was based on a million off-topic issues certainly convinces me that vaccines are bad.

"Don't be mad if your kid gets measles from some kid whose parents didn't vaccinate him...get mad at all the sugar in food!"
