"The Silence Breakers" behind the #MeToo movement have been named as Person of the Year by Time magazine.

In an announcement on US breakfast television on Wednesday morning, the group was declared as the most influential person of 2017, based on the magazine editors’ reckoning of who or what had most influenced the news in the past year, for good or ill.

Second was President Donald Trump, and third was Xi Jinping, the leader of China.

The winning #MeToo movement was formed in the aftermath Mr Trump’s presidential campaign, when a 2005 audio recording of his bragging about how he could “grab ‘em by the ” surfaced on the election trail.

The usage of the hashtag has surged again following the revelations about Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Mr Trump was last year's winner, then as president-elect.

At the time, he embraced the accolade, calling it "a tremendous honor". However, he recently expressed his scorn over being contacted by the magazine for a second possible victory.

His reaction sparked hilarity on social media, with Andy Murray mocking the president.

Former editors at Time then clarified that the phone call did not signify that Mr Trump has "probably" won.

In third place was the Chinese president, who in October was elevate to the same exalted status as the founding founder of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao Zedong.

With the move, Mr Xi, who was elected into office in 2012, now appears set to govern China far beyond the next five years.

In 2015 Angela Merkel was the winner, while in 2014 it was another group of people – “the Ebola fighters”.

"The Silence Breakers" was selected from a shortlist of ten, which included North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, special counsel and former FBI director Robert Mueller, and San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick, who has sparked the kneeling protests at American Football matches.

Also shortlisted was Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and chief executive, who is now the richest person in the world. He saw his net worth top $100 billion last month following Black Friday sales, although it has since dropped just below the milestone.

Mr Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, was Time’s Person of the Year in 1999.

Another group to be nominated was “The Dreamers” – a group of nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as young children. The group are at risk of deportation as the Trump administration rescinds the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, commonly referred to as DACA.

Another world leader to make the shortlist was Mohammed bin Salman, 32, named crown prince of Saudi Arabia in June. He is seen as one of the most dynamic royals in the Arab world’s wealthiest nation, and as the driving force behind a recent purge of senior officials in the country.

The tenth person or group on the shortlist was film director Patty Jenkins, whose blockbuster Wonder Woman made history when it raked in the biggest domestic opening ever for a female director.

Time has been doing this for as long as I can remember, unlike GQ who I'd never realized did such things until this year, and people remember the winner from back when weekly magazines were far more influential than today. It's a much bigger deal than you're giving it credit for.
