Direct TV Sunday Ticket Deal - threaten to cancel

Recommended Posts

Every year I call Direct TV and threaten to cancel the Sunday Ticket due to rising prices. I try to at least get the Super Fan for free or some money off of the regular price and it usually works. I was on another board and a poster said that he threatened to cancel and they just said ok and did it. He waited them out and they called six days later with an offer of $80 off the regular price and the SF for free. I went through the same exact process and they cancelled me also without offering anything initially. Low and behold they called just now from a 1-877 number, exactly six days later and offered me the same deal the other guy got and I jumped on it. The reason I am telling you the type of number that they called from is if you are like me and see a 1-877 number on the caller ID you might not answer it. I did that twice today. It will now cost me only $160 for the whole package. It saved me $180 dollars because I would have definitely had to get the SF package due to my addiction to HD football.

I hope everyone that gets the ticket and tries this strategy has the same outcome that I did. Good luck.

Its people like you who keep the price climbing. If people just paid for it, then we might actually get a stable price. They let you pay for it over time, and if you can afford HD then you can afford Sunday ticket and SF. Crazy how damn cheap some people are. :overhead:

 Pllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaasssseee. It's called a monopoly. When you are the only people with the rights to a product you can charge whatever you want if there is a demand for it.

FYI

This works on cell plans too.

Call to cancel after you completed your contract.

Tell them "Yada, yada, yada, you sux"

"Blank has a better deal, thank you but im done with your service.", next you get sent to the Loss Prevention Call Center.

And BAM, you get a deal.

P.S. This works on most any service provider.

Good to see so many are cheap also. It's all Direct TV's fault for supplying a service you want, but you just don't wanna pay for? Makes perfect sense, Yet I'm the Jack Ass, haha.

I'll pay for it, but I don't want to pay their ridiculous, monopolized price. Do you walk into a car dealership and just pay what the sticker price says? If you answer yes to that question, you are a bigger moron than I thought. If I can pay less than the normal price then that's what I'm going to do. If you want to keep paying their increase every year, that's your business. Just don't try and tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing.

I bet you are the type of guy that gets out of the shower to take a piss, because it's just the right thing to do. What a moron.

I just called direct TV and nonchalantly mentioned that I wanted to cancel my Sunday ticket and the rep right away offered to reduce the cost by $40. Thank you, big easy. I'm pissing all over the shower tonight.

It is not as if Direct TV is not making money off the $180. They don't have to work extra man hours to provide you with Sunday Ticket. It is a freaking airwave signal. Anything they get is profit as opposed to getting nothing. If they are willing to come down it only means that they know they are charging too much. If you can get it cheaper then you should.

I'll bet jackass pays retail at the car dealership too. I don't want him running up the price of my next new car purchase.

just complained to DirectTV. Explained that while I understand the promotion is used to get new customers, I dont think it needs to slap existing customers in the face, by limiting the perks to new customers only. then promptly cancelled my sunday ticket

now, we play the waiting game............

Man, you guys need to move to Canada. Here's what we get.

NFL Sunday Ticket

NHL Centre Ice

NBA League Pass

MLB Extra Innings

OHL Action Pack

Nascar Hotpass

US College Football and Basketball

All this for a 6 month subscription to the "Super Sports Pack" on digital cable. Most games in High Def. All Nfl in HD.

Subscription rate, $19.99 for the first four months and $29.99 for the last two months. $139.94 for six months of everything above. Even if you didn't cancel it would still only cost $160 for the six months of football season. Not to mention Canadian money is worth a little less than an American dollar.

If you don't believe me here is the link

Being Canadian is so wonderful ;) <_< :(

There is nothing wrong with trying to get an honest deal, but you guys are just scamming the system, yet you are the same people who ###### its all messed up....things that make you go hmmmmm?

I bet when you guys buy your cars you run right to the cheapest pos out, with no regards to safety, resale value, gas mileage anything that matters, just as long as its cheap. Instead of figuring out ways to scam the system, go get a better job and not have to worry about a 180 bucks, that they give you time to pay over 4-5 months.

If you all stopped renting cheap man whores, you should have no issues paying you're Direct TV bill.

I'm the guy the original poster is writing about. I canceled for real and was prepared to go without this year (2nd baby coming, yada yada, feeling the $ crunch) but when they called back 6 days later and made the offer, they kept me. It was good business on DTV's part. They either get nothing from me or they get me to pay a reduced price.

I don't feel a tinge of guilt about it. Why should I? They didn't have to call me back. They chose to.

Hey Nichee,

I want to thank you for the heads up on the process you went through. It worked exactly the way you said it would. I was just sharing our success with the discounted package with the other FF today posters so they could also give it a shot. Thanks again.

ElwayFan,

I guess you are just punch drunk from getting batted around by everyone in this thread to continuously keep trying to spew your pro Direct TV love fest. I would suggest that you just cancel your account, start a new one, and just go with a clean slate. Hey it's America and most people deserve a second chance. But if you continue to go the direction you've been heading, you risk the aforementioned by yostevo...your stupidity becoming legendary.

Do the smart thing for the first time in your short FF Today life and take the plea bargain that has been offered.

I think its funny that everyone has an issue with DIRECTV about their prices, but no one looks at the real "Monopoly" called the NFL...

In reality DIRECTV's margin on the Sunday Ticket are extremely small as compared to their regular programming. They only profit about 2% on the actual Sunday ticket after they pay the Billions to the NFL for the broadcast rights. Lets not forget they also have to launch new sats for the extra HD capacity as well.

People make such a stink about the price, but they never realize that the only reason DIRECTV has the NFL package is so that you people keep paying for the regular programming where they have 30-40% margins. Grabbing the NFL package was a smart business move to keep current subscribers and gain new subscribers because DIRECTV was willing to pay for exclusive programming. Every cable company and DISH could have bought the NFL rights, I give DIRECTV an A+ because they actually had the balls to do it.

As far as the packages for new subs, get over it, every company does this as a way to attract new customers. Cell Phone companies, cable companies, internet accesss... Its just part of the business. I happily pay for the Sunday ticket and Superfan because you get the best bang for your buck... I agree its expensive, but I think its worth it...

I'm a firm believer that everyhting in life should be negotiable, but I'm not gonna haggle with DIRECTV over $80.. Lets face it people, there are lots of other companies and products out there where consumers are getting absolutely cleaved and they dont even know it... how many iPods does your family have?

Oh and unless youve been a longtime valuable subscriber to DIRECTV..(i.e you subscribe to premium packages and have been a subscriber for at least 18 months) you arent gonna get squat... they only give out the "discount" to subscribers who are profitable to the company. And what I mean by profitable is that your monthly cost has finally covered the cost of installation and hardware that you got for free when you signed on.

Whatever, thats still no excuse to spread the word.

Punch Drunk? Why because I didnt respond fast enough for you, maybe I was at work so I can afford to pay my bills in full instead of scam the companies and make all the honest people pay for it. Again, why would I wanna change my name, because I believe in being honest and 10 others say I am an ass for it, lol. I dont run from others calling me names, besides I could care less about what a bunch of cheap, dishonest people think of me, or my opinions.

Looks like at least 1 other person in this thread is a productive member of society, with some sense of responsibility. :pointstosky:

I don’t want to disrespect your position but you are misinformed about economics. It is people who haggle and negotiate that keep prices down. If everyone paid “list” price without a complaint then you’re not charging enough. It simple economics 101. Any good company is going to charge right up to what the market will bear. Any company that discounts also runs the risk that people will try to get it. I’ll end here. People have written dissertations on this.

this is what I sent out to them in email

Details: I called your customer service line, and was disconnected. Called back again, and gave all my information, only to be transfered in the middle of a conversation. Once transfered, I was stuck talking to someone that was unable to answer my question, and then transfered again.I am not very happy with the way I am treated as an existing customer when it concerns the NFL Sunday ticket. If a new customer signs up for sunday ticket, they are treated to 4 months of free premium channels, while as an

existing customer I receive nothing extra. Im since cancelled my NFL sunday ticket, and will just go to the local sports pub instead. While, I understand the point of offering these packages is to attract new customers, but I dont understand the need to slight existing PAYING customers.

and this is what I got back:

Thanks for writing. I see that you have been with us for a while and I want you to know that we appreciate your business with us. I understand your concern about receiving the NFL SUNDAY TICKET. You are important to us and we certainly want to keep you as a customer. A service specialist will call you within the next 48 hours to discuss what we can do to meet your needs.

Thanks again for writing and we appreciate the opportunity of letting us address your concern.

if I dont get any kind of discount, then I will just let it go. Not because Im cheap. well, ok. because I am cheap. But also, last year, with all the overtime at my work, I missed out on about 7 sundays. so, its not as important as it used to be

There is self-righteous and then there is stupid. You appear to be both.

As consumers, we are all within are rights to express concerns over the price of a product. Threatening to cancel a subscription to a premium entertainment service is no more dishonest than negotiating the price for a nex luxury car, as others have pointed out.

I got the ticket last year for the first time after to moving to a new part of the country. I absolutely love it. Especially w/ the deal that they give you as a new subscriber. This year, when I saw the price it did strike me as a bit expensive. Especially since my wife is a full time student and I work for a non-profit. So I figure the least I can do is to call and see if I can get some more bang for my hard earned buck. They offered Superfan for free. I took it.

I think it smart business on DirecTV part to make small concessions to individual customers. And its absolutely a good idea for us as consumers to ask for the best deal that we can get. Thats America.

Your stance has nothing to do with honesty and everything to do w/ being a sheep.

I don't even know why there are people like this arguing against this post?!?!

A guy posts a message to help his fellow FF Today brothers save some cash and he gets ripped for being "cheap" and called a "scammer". Wow, thats gratitude for you! TRUST ME, they are still making money even when giving a discounted price. Otherwise they wouldn't do it. Im sure they have certain guidlines for how low they can go. If they wanted they could say NO DISCOUNTS FOR ANYONE and lose customers, but by giving discounts to those who ask they KEEP a good number of customers that otherwise would have left. Hence they make MORE profit than if they didn't offer any discounts. It's called running a smart business. Obviously you have never taken any type of economics class, and if you did you missed a class...

Stop being such a hater and appreciate it when someone tries to help you out.

What I find funny is that don't people realize the price that it's worth IS what the guy who got the callback paid for it?

They would not have offered the price if it cost more than they offered....I know sounds very redundant and pretty basic, but for the simple minded, I guess it can be pretty complex.

The guy called Direct TV to cancel. If they never called him back...then he's not getting the package. So at the old price it was currently at, it was not worth it. So to DTV getting $160 is better than getting $0, and I can assure you they are making money on it.

So quit your complaining and let capitalism do it's job. Don't fault people b/c your the sucker who large corporations love b/c you're the reason their CEO is driving around in a Bentley and has three vacation homes.

This is exactly what I would be afraid of come the first Sunday of football! :shocking:

I have had the ticket since 2003 and was paying 5 pmts. of $45.80 and 3 pmts. of $33.00 for the SuperFan. This would total $320 for the whole enchilada. I just called DirecTV to see what they could do to help me out and the guy knocked off $10 a month for 6 months. So now I will pay $268 for the whole thing. :dunno:

I was looking through some old bills and found I was paying $41.80 for 5 months and FREE SuperFan last year. So the whole thing was $209 last year. The difference is a whopping $59. This money is actually saved as I get loaded at home instead of paying insane bar prices, I don't go to the strip club after the Sunday night game, and don't risk the DUI on the way home. I think all that is worth the extra $59. :o

Man, I thought you all were bullsh!tting us. DirecTV called last night and were very inquisitive as to why I canceled my football package.

As predicted, they offered me the NFL Sunday Ticket and the SuperFan package for a TOTAL of $189, broken down over 5 months. Sh!t, I should've done this years ago.

:ninja:

now I have to explain it to the Misses why the Sunday Ticket reappeared on the billing statement :wall:

Yep. I got the same deal a month ago. I called to absolutely cancel (basically out of protest of the price) and they offered up $10.00 off for 12 months. I said that's nice and all but I already pay for HD services and I can't watch these games without it and I'm not paying for HD again. She said okay....here's the superfan for free. :(

Winner winner chicken dinner. I too had to explain to the wife why we will still be getting it but .......so worth it!

got an email back stating someone would contact me in 48 hours

so, tonite, I get a phone call, and they offered me the ticket at $69.99 in 4 payments. And I aslo get 4 months of free premium channels and sports channels.

So i ordered my new Direct TV and Sunday Ticket about 2-3 weeks ago and cancelled comcast (luckily I am still getting free basic comcast) Direct was supposed to come last Sunday and they never did, they couldnt get a hold of the rep and had no clue. I wasnt too happy. So i called back again later to talk to Direct TV and told them I was thinking about cancelling before I even started. In the end I got upgraded from the HD receiver to the DVR/HD receiver, and $101 off my bill for them not showing up.

I was already getting a $50 visa check card, and only paying $49.99 for the first 4 months for all the works, so now basically my first 3 months are FREE <_<
