So Now the Looney Left Wants to get Rid of Algebra. Why?

Recommended Posts

It's too hard for minorities...

This is a civil rights issue, but this is also something that plagues all Americans — particularly low-income Americans. If you think about all the underemployed or unemployed Americans in this country who cannot connect to a job in this economy — which is unforgiving of those students who don't have a credential — the biggest barrier for them is this algebra requirement. It's what has kept them from achieving a credential.

Have you ever used it in real life? Most pointless insignificant course in educational history. Waste of money and time to have this taught.

Oh, I would disagree with that. I think more people use algebra then they actually realize.

When I checked out with trigonometry. Seriously? Imaginary numbers? Well here's my imaginary answer. Go f*** yourself. I remember that being pretty much exactly what went through my head in high school.

I'm actually surprised it's still around. I remember when George Bush heard about this he immediately skipped Congress and signed an executive order deploying thousands of troops on a pointless search to kill

Al-Gebra.

But hey, while we're on the subject of worthless f****** subjects. I know I will probably date myself with this but I really want to go back and punch those idiots who tried to teach me cursive. Along with that? Those idiots who made me use f****** onion skin paper and a typing eRaser the consistency of a f****** Whetstone.

Let's add to this list the concept of diagramming sentences.

While we're at it, I want reparations for the time I spent allegedly learning the metric system.

And seriously? We actually had old school typing class on one end of the hallway while we had word processors on the other end. How f****** stupid was that?

Wow... Just wow...

Now be honest, slim shady.

Do you personally know anyone offline or online that has ever used it since they finished school?

We both know the answer to that one, don't we?

Algebra and Geometry should've never been a high school requirements.

The people that feel they need it in a career choice should take their own private course.

No, I made good grades in the basic necessities of mathematics, but as a hardcore liberal protester I will always take a stand against crap we shouldn't have to endure in life.

Trump and Algebra are at the top of my list.

Not to change subjects from Vince44's trolling (hopefully) of algebra, but there are a lot of recent studies linking learning cursive to reading fluency. I don't really know a lot about it but my wife is a literacy coach (basically runs the literacy program for a k-12 school) and let me know in no uncertain terms that I was an absolute moron for saying cursive was useless. Being the skeptic (and a-hole) I am, I made her show me documented studies to prove I was wrong. And her, being the stubborn a-hole she is, did.

Of course they are anti Algebra. Algebraic problem-solving teaches useful mental habits and also helps train people’s general problem-solving abilities.

When you are the Party of the Poor it is best to keep your voting base clueless!

Everyone has.

Have you ever driven on a long trip and tried to figure how long it will take to get where you're going?

Have you ever tried to figure out how much money you need to contribute to your 401k to meet a goal by year end?

Have you ever tried to estimate how much it would cost to fill your gas tank?

yup. i also use it professionally when calculating food and beverage costs, daily/weekly/monthly/ annual revenue, potential savings based on volume, employee raises and bonuses, etc, etc

I agree wholeheartedly. This discussion is about community colleges.

In my opinion, the only classes you should have to take in college are those related to your major. If something like Calculus is needed (Computer Science), then sure you have to take it.

But the current system is BS. You graduate from high school, then have to take general ed classes again in college. You have to take a foreign language in college. Another math class. A science class. A history class. I already took that stuff. It's a waste of money more so than anything.

Want to eliminate student debt? Get rid of these filler classes and make them all vocational (in essence)

I used Boolean Algebra almost daily as an EE. Still use the foundations on a daily basis as a CS.

I don't know about that. At a minimum, he just doesn't know that he's using it. I mean, you can't go to the grocery store without using algebra even if you don't know it.

It's the old joke about why do hotdogs come in packs of 10 and hot dog buns come in packs of 8? It sounds simplistic, and it is, but working that is just plain old algebra.

Jesus, I feel like I'm about to break into some kind of Schoolhouse Rock special here.

You're talking about basic one variable simple equations that a reasonably intelligent baboon could figure out.

As I recall, most of the two years of algebra I took was a bunch of bull crap about finding slopes and consins and tangents and blah blah.

It is completely useless to most people. This is easily verifiable by the fact that 80% of American adults would not be able to do it if asked.

That said, whatever. I find the notion that everything taught in school needs to be directly linked to earning a paycheck ridiculous. Education should be well rounded. You're supposed to be becoming a better, more educated person, not being programmed to perform on narrow function.

Learning, or a attempting to learn algebra helps develop a youths thinking capacity. Will be a sad day when algebra is no longer taught.

Especially, for such an absurd reason.

I'll agree with the reason part. If they choose to stop teaching it to teach something else more important, ok. But this reason is dumb.

And I get the training thinking part. I value what I learned in law school. Not the bullsh!t law part. I don't use that and never will again. That isn't really the point anyway. The point is to teach you to think in a logical, critical way, and to articulate those criticisms well. It's a useful skill.

Maybe if you carry a sign, get in a big group of people and start some sort of chant, you can make it happen.

Lemme guess, we should get rid of speech, English and grammar because "everything is done electronically now" and it's not fair to the minorities that you have to be able to speak something other than ebonics or Spanish?

I did not realize until this very day that the Vince in Vince44 was for Vince Young.

Guys in my industry use geometry every day. Measuring, determining angles, sq ft, cutting stringers, etc.

So much embarassing stupid in this thread. I hope you guys promoting the dumbing down of schools are trolling. It's so absurd and beyond the pale that I have a hard time even taking your suggestions seriously.
