How many of you have dropped Cable TV or Satellite TV

Recommended Posts

Are as many people watching ESPN as there used to be?

ESPN announced a new morning show on their website this a.m. Made me start thinking. Does anyone care?

"Kids" (age 18-25), I don't think watch sports like most of us did when we were that age. Many reasons. Mainly too many choices for visual media. And too many "other" electronic things to do.

Which led me to this thought:

My 12 year old and my 20 year old...don't watch "real TV". Mainly YouTube for the 12 year old, and Netflix and Hulu for the 20 year old.

All of their friends are the same way. All of my friends "20-something kids" --- they don't subscribe to local cable or satellite. Its all internet.

So what is going to happen to all of the cable tv companies? Satellite companies?

I'd imagine the cable companies, as long as they offer fast internet, will be fine. Its that same internet they offer though, that takes people to 'YouTube, Hula, SlingTV, AppleTV, etc"--the compete with the other service that the cable companies offer -- TV channels.

Do the satellite companies have enough customers living in the boonies?

What's the long term outlook for cable/satellite providers?

I did. Chipped a big Corner out of the bottom left part of my TV. But, the damn thing still works!

Pulled the plug, then put it back in, now going to pull it again, probably for good.

Long term prognosis for cable is not good, IMO.

Switched to YouTube TV in March, didn't lose anything, saving about $45 per month (and my speeds under internet only went up from 60 to 100Mbps).

I've seriously never looked into it but unless it has Sunday Ticket involved im probably not moving anywhere.

Finally doing so this month and saving $200! We cut everything with Comcast due to having it be more expensive with internet only, which is our main concern. We are getting a Roku. We are going through AT&T and get all our service with them. since we already have our cell phones through them, plus getting a bit of a discount for that. We don't need the antenna we were contemplating using, but will keep it since you can no longer get them.

So, we will be getting HBO, Direct TV Now, and have our own equipment and not leasing. We were paying almost $50 just for that. We are getting everything we want in a package from Direct TV Now and also cutting our landline out. We will be fine with the internet speed for our house since we all won't be on it all at once and no need for a DVR. I mostly used it for Bravo and local channels. I pretty much can see what i want on my laptop anyway. We also got a great sports package...win/win overall.

Probably should but my internets and phone are packaged with it and I'm too lazy to do it. :dunno:

Still doing the song and dance of calling every 6 months or so, if I can figure out viable live TV (Sports) I'll be getting rid of everything but the Internet.

I'm almost to that point. I have to call DirecTV again this week. If they can't find a way to get my bill below $100/month (they always do) I may just say fock it and pull the plug on them. I'm getting tired of the routine.

I cut the cord for about 2 years. Paid about $75 for internet/home phone. Used Kodi, Exodus and the sportsdevil app mainly. Updated to 17.4 and it never worked right again, no matter the build. Got xfinity back last September. Paying $152 for internet, tv, and home phone.

I play that game every year around Sunday Ticket time, not sure why they insist on doing this dance, but whatever.

Same. Call in the fall every year. Once they stop giving me free ST I will probably be done with them.

I would love to do this but I cant live without Comcast Sportsnet. Once I find a way to get Sixers and to a lesser extent Phillies, I am out.

Interesting... our biggest hangup from cutting the cord has been availability of Pac 12 Network; it looks like that is available on YouTube TV. Hmm...

I'm a Red Zone guy. I need to look into how to get that a little bit more, but it seems like it is on YouTube TV as well.

And those of you with a huge cable or satellite package....how much TV do you actually watch? And for the shows you do watch....is it more than a handful of channels?

When did paying over $400 a month for TV/Phone/Internet become part of what Americans do?

For me....

1.) AT&T Cellular (4 phones + 15GB) = $300. Usually its more, but 2 phones on the plan are paid for, but, as the cell companies have it figured out, those 2 phones are about shot, so I'll need 2 more, bringing total to about $360 per month

2.) TV from Local Cable Company = $80

3.) Internet from same company (unlimited, 400mps/down 100mps/up) = $60

4.) Landline (use for my business and personal use , includes unlimited calls in U.S) = $20

TOTAL = WTF

I use Netflix/YouTube for shows and movies. Live sporting event I'll just watch a friends. Cable TV is a complete rip off considering how much good free content there is out there.

It's funny, I actually had a net gain in watchable channels going from Spectrum "down" to YT. I think the big drawback for most people for the time being would be HBO (and Sunday Ticket for Direct TV users), but I picked up CBS Sports Network, Fox Sports 2, ESPN News, ESPN U, and SEC Network by switching and lost, uhhh... Weather Channel?

Landline? Why?

I'm getting fiber ran to my house this summer. At that point, I'll be getting rid of comcast.

I haven't decided what streaming service to go with yet, though. Need to find one with DVR functionality.

What's the difference between watching those teams and a blank screen?

I cut the cord about a year ago. I have never looked back. I feel so much better not even being exposed to CNN/MSNBC/Fox. I found that after I cut the cord talking heads were causing me stress. I never noticed it till it stopped. Kinda like a vibration you are so accustomed to you don't feel it. Once I stopped I could clearly see the pattern of stress. The boy and I have hulu and netflix. Plus I have a youtube ripper that allows me to download his favorite cartoons.

I had the Ticket for almost 20 years. I got tired of arguing with them over the yearly price increases. I usually get a handful of Cowboys games on my local affiliates every season anyway. The rest I can either watch at a bar or stream on reddit through the ps4.

The more I think about it the more I think I should just pull the trigger and be done with them. If it doesn't work out I can always come back and take advantage of their new customer freebies.

Shortly after I moved here in my late teens early 20s.

3:10, odd that you havent yet left to pick up your daughter, who gets out of her elite pre-K program a half hour away from you at 3:30, especially since you presumably bring your infant along for the ride every day.

I called comcrap today... i told them its cheaper for me to sign up for unlimited data from the cell phone package than to pay their 79 a month for 150mbps. They dropped it to fifty.

Obviously, I cut the cord when I moved to china almost three years ago.

I get shows and movies from Pirate Bay. Books off of library genesis. RIp YouTube videos for class content. Thats about the extent of my media consumption, except for Apple Music subscription.

I agree with you about the talking heads thing. I am so glad to be rid of all that. My ex wife used to watch cnn constantly, and I hate it. When I go home now, my dad basically flips between Fox, cnn, and various investing shows. Drives me crazy. Wed all be better off to get rid of them.

What a creepy loser. Ever hear of spring break chump? You lose, again. And stop bringing up my kids. You got away with some focked up already. I won't be so nice again.
