40th anniversary: Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash...

Recommended Posts

Talk about your bad luck. or good luck if you were one of the survivors

Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash. Twenty others survived.

Gary Rossington is the only original member of the band still playing.

Correction. Sorta

Ricky Medlocke, who now plays lead guitar for the band was their drummer for awhile back in the 70's.

Its a pretty focking stupid thing to run out of gas in a GD automobile. But in a focking jet plane? Christ, that's unbelievable.

Freebird sucks. Sweet home Alabama sucks. They have some great songs, but those two suck.

9/11 happend on a Tuesday. When I was driving to work that day, Tuesdays Gone came on the radio. Whenever I hear that song now, I think of that morning. Crazy. Great song.

My cousin made a Facebook post a few months back that he just saw Lynyrd Skynrd in concert. My comment - Wow, they must be pretty old. Did they run out of gas at the end? He didnt get the gas reference.

I just learned yesterday that my eight y/o son's favorite song is Sweet Home Alabama. I'd long known that he liked it, hadn't realized until now that it was #1.

As I recall their album Street Survivors had been released shortly before the crash and had to be recalled as on the cover some of the band members were in flames.

Thought it was one dude.

They named the band after their high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner
