Why would they lie? Depends on who you are talking about.

Kensil, Vincent, et al - Because they hate the Patriots and wanted to catch them in the act. Would have been a great coup if they weren't bungling idiots.

Goodell - Because they want to make sure that the court of public opinion is all on board with their over-the-top punishment. Goodell needs to keep control over all appeals. As such, he needs to make sure that everyone views the Patriots as the bad-guy and he is the savior.

I think the Balls were deflated, but the investigation was obviously biased towards the outcome the NFL had predetermined. I don't think they had to go thru this at all. They very easily could have given them a reasonable fine, even if it was 2 million, and taken a mid round pick. There is no denying that the balls were under the acceptable level. Even if taking into account the Ideal Gas Law, the one ball at 10.5 points to maybe not all Gas Law related. There is almost no chance of proving a devious plan to mess with the balls. They have wasted time and money based on, imo, Roger trying to win a public relations battle, by using the Cheatriots crowd. There was at least some lack of procedure with regards to handling/measuring the balls pregame. The referees of the NFL touch the balls between every play. They seemed to ok with with what they were handling.

Now that it's been 7 months since this all began, here's my opinion:

 

1. Brady definitely cheated. The Deflator and destroying cell phone are proof in my book.

2. The penalty is too stiff. Fine and two game suspension would be fine. Draft picks are a little over the top.

3. At this point, it's like two middle school girl (Brady & Goodell) simply not wanting to budge.

4. #2 could have easily been avoided by Brady early on.

Honestly I couldn't care less what you and everyone else thinks about the patriots. My thing is there's no proof that the patriots lied or cheated. Just circumstantial evidence. However there is clear proof that the nfl, Ravens, and colts lied. Don't care if you still think the patriots did it but you should at least start to wonder "if the nfl lied about this then what else are they lying about?"
