Bears Kicker

Recommended Posts

Chicago signed the veteran kicker in free agency to a contract that included $9 million in guaranteed money, but Parkey missed 11 total kicks (eight field goals, three extra points) for the Bears, including the ill-fated last-second attempt against the Eagles that bounced off the left upright and hit the crossbar.

article goes on to say that if they cut him out right, they'll have to carry four and a half million dollars in dead money next year.

9 million in guaranteed money for a journeyman kicker? You got to hang some of that on the GM. Damn

Interesting portion of FMIA article from Peter King:

5. I think this was a thought-provoking message, conveyed to me over the weekend by a current NFL coach after it looked like all eight coaching vacancies had been filled—while only one GM in the league got fired. (Oakland’s Reggie McKenzie was replaced by Mike Mayock. I don’t count Baltimore, because Ozzie Newsome’s departure was a clear retirement.) “Eight coaches fired, and the same GMs who failed—I think in all eight jobs—hired the new coaches. Where is the accountability for the GMs? Do they save their jobs because they’re close with the owner and the owner is siding with the GM instead of the coach? It seems ridiculous to me that in eight jobs, all the fault goes to the coaches and none to the GMs. Explain that.” I can’t.

I think Ryan Pace has some 'splainin to do for signing a kicker for that amount of money.

GM's get fired all the time. All the time. King knows this, but he prints it anyway. That's why he sucks, much like every other sportswriter these days. I used to look forward to MMQB. Haven't read him in years.

I think that you have coaches that are getting fired after 1 season with GM's not taking much heat at all.

For the record, Steve Wilks was epicly bad as a HC and needed to be fired. You didn't have the bad fortune of listening to him after each loss -- he was a deer in the headlights. Steve Keim (GM) at least has a record of success, although the Cards have trended down for a few years. I think Keim and Michael Bidwill (owner) are buds as well. If this Kingsbury experiment fails though, it might be time for a new GM as well.

One guy. And he proved he was a moron before the first game was over. As if it's a common occurrence. King is a hack, through and through.

Who hired the sh!tty coaches? It was those GM's. You also have guys who are signing guys like Parkey, but they get a free pass. King's point was that it was interesting that an NFL guy asked why GM's were not being held to the same standard as coaches.

I don't think King is a hack. He has some good connections and he reports on some interesting topics. I don't agree with many of his opinions, but he at least explains himself and doesn't talk out of his ass like many of the other guys.

Why doesnt anyone mention that the kick was tipped and was officially ruled a blocked kick?

First, sincerely, congratulations on not cutting and pasting this.

Second, as the article points out, it was hardly just one botched kick. We wouldn't be having this conversation if it were just that last kick.

That doesnt answer why no one mentions that the kick was tipped and was officially ruled a blocked kick. I think it is because you didnt know that it was tipped.

It was discussed in other threads. The guy wasnt a good kicker beyond that one kick. Certainly wasnt worthy of his guaranteed money.

I wont even get into the flight of the ball not changing after it was tipped

Even good GMs swing and miss at times. Pace is has been pretty solid for the Bears.

Dave Dumborowski is the Rob Deer of GMs and he won a world series.

Because the defender barely got a fingernail in the kick and didnt seem to alter the trajectory. The kick is probably missed even if the ball wasnt touched.

If it's 1" to the right, it probably goes in. The tip certainly had that much of an effect. Whether the tip helped or hurt, no one knows.

Maybe, we will never know. A 43-yard FG with the season on the line should never have been that close in the first place.

It was closer than Scott Norwood's. :dunno:

The practice kick he hit 60 seconds before was right down the middle.
