Baker Mayfield - The next Cade McNown?

Recommended Posts

McNown could very well be the biggest bust in Bears history, right up there with Curtis Enis. The bad part about McNown is that he was a real tool, blaming play calling and receivers for interceptions and poor play on his part. He used to tell fans who booed to stay home and stop watching.

If Mayfield struggles in his rookie year. I wonder if he will be the same way. Why recently did he need to say the following to the press?

Regarding his recent visit with the Los Angeles Chargers, the outspoken former Oklahoma quarterback told SI.com

“I didn’t look at their playbook as much as a I should have,” Mayfield said. “It could have gone a little bit better . . . but at the same time, I’m prioritizing which playbooks I’m going to learn. No offense to them, but I’ve got a lot on my plate.

On NFL radio I heard the question asked to James Lofton -

"What kind of message do you think Mayfield is sending to the Jets with that statement?"

Lofton's reply - "Don't draft me."

Hahahaha. The guy already has some question marks on his personality, why doesn't someone coach him to just not say things like that.

I don't know that this is a bad thing really. The Chargers are picking where, 17th? They're not going to get him there. Are they in a position to trade up? Maybe. Maybe not. If I were him and I'm expecting to go to 1 of 5 or 6 teams, then why not just concentrate on those teams?

Me, I see him as a straight shooter who did own his "mistake". That's not what McNown did. He wasn't being P.C. I'm ok with that too. That's someone I target, not avoid.

I'm not sure I'm buying it. He doesn't seem under control quite often with his words and emotions. I don't wish bad on the guy, but there was a reason why Peyton Manning was good and Leaf wasn't. Maturity. If Mayfield goes to a bad team and sucks early, he may blow a gasket.

I doubt Mayfield's future in the NFL hinges on knowing the Chargers playbook before draft day. His honesty is refreshing.

You could be right. I don't really know enough about him to really have a strong take on him. I'm simply calling the remarks as I see them.

That's interesting. I don't think PC has anything to do with this and "refreshing"? If he had no past personality concerns, maybe. But he is being consistent with his chatter going into the NFL. It's funny because I have read a bunch and listened a bunch to various analysts and opinions about this guy and I never heard "refreshing". Most if not all folks have been saying he has two main negatives. His size, and his personality/maturity. One or both of these negatives have been the downfall of many rookie QBs.

I just looked up Doug's profile on Mayfield posted on this site and his first 2 concerns about Mayfield are:

Concerns

  • Less-than-ideal size for the position - a deficiency magnified by his drop-down release.
  • Immaturity issues only? Or a potential character red flag?

So my point is with all this, teams I am sure are watching everything he says to the media, and although this isn't the worst thing possible, it's not very good. I don't think the Jets are thinking how refreshing it is that Mayfield is stating to the media "No offense to them but I've got a lot on my plate."

Worley cost the Eagles a player they would have cut anyway.

Mitch cost 4 draft picks for one spot.

Duh Bearz.

I would think all we can go on is a hunch or a thought or a judgement.

No one knows, not even the teams.

So I would say it's diffently a hunch.

Psalm 119:157.

Sure. But the question is more just a hunch or is there reasoning to your hunch?

Why? Just a hunch?

In the 2018 class, Baker Mayfield is: - 1st in Adjusted YPA - 1st in Adjusted Completion% - 1st in QB Rating - 1st in Completion% Under Pressure (SIS) - 1st in QB Rating on deep passes (PFF) - 1st in QB Rating on play-action passes (PFF) - 1st in QB Rating on non-PA passes (PFF)

Mayfield will be the best QB in this class and it won't be close.

I agree. And all these people that just want to keep saying his personality is just like Johnny Manziel. To each their own I suppose.

But for me, I compare his personality to Jim Kelly.

In the end I might end up being wrong. But if I needed a QB. Mayfields my guy.

If the desire to be great is there, I think Mayfield could be indeed the best QB in this class.

Sure he gas all the stats. But every year a bum from thr Big 12 breaks a record. Seems like the whole vonf puts up gawdy stats eveey single year.

The top 6 in order of all time passing yards for Big 12 are

Landry Jones

Graham Harrell

Baker Mayfield

Mason Rudolph

Colt Mccoy

Chase Danials

Im not saying Baker wont be good. But his stats are nothing new for Big 12 QBs. A lot of bums he is sharing company with.

Again im not saying I think he will suck. But the whole rah rah guy at QB is more of a collage thing. QBs who get so emotionally high in the NFL seem to faulter.

At 6 foot that is fine. But the comparisons to Wilson and Brees are off. Brees is perhaps the most accurate passer of all time, a lot of which from the pocket. Wilson is a real athelte. Baker is a 2 time walk on. Has some wiggle but not vlose to the athelte Wilson is or Johnny Football was for that matter. Baker tends to take off when his first read isnt there.

He will have a bigger target on him than most rookie QBs.

I think all the comparisons of Mayfield are pretty crappy. All I hear is the Wilson and Brees and Manziel. My own personal .02.

His on field play is that of Doug Flutie. And his attitude/personality is Jim Kelly.

I'm usually pretty bad at picking QB's. But I'll be pulling for the kid. And hopefully I'm finally right with a QB evaluation.

I'll buy in on the Flutie comparison.

Career: 92 games played, 86 TDs, 68 Ints, 54.7 completion %. Only I don't think mayfield lasts as long in the league.

Problem is if you put Jim Kelly in that type of player, probably doesn't bode well. And I liked Flutie. Fun to watch for sure.

There's a lot of NFL suck on that list. The Big 12 had always had a lot of bad defenses. Their offensive talent has gained a lot of unwarranted praise because of it.

Bradford Tannehill Kordell are perhaps the 3 best QBs in the NFL that came from the big 12..........IN THE LAST 40 YEARS.

That to me is just amazing. Not one college but a whole conf. For 40 years.

Passing yards per attempt is the most important QB stat, there now you know my secret to finding top QB for FF.

Mayfield #1

Mayfield #2

He is going to be a star in the NFL.

He's right up there with Bryce Petty. Nice!! And no way, Zack Robinson? Holy wow !!

Haha. I get it you are just joking...

People don't get it that Mayfield is most likely a wasted 1st round pick by the Jets.

I wasn't joking. I actually like Bryce Petty. Mayfield's yards per attempt combined with his completion percentage take him to a whole new level above Petty and those other players listed.

Where are all the QBs in the list that are good in the NFL?

I thought we were talking about the big 12. Not the conferences that play defense.

After Aikman, you get...

John Hadi

Lynn Dickey?

You really have to start reaching for QBs that you could say had any impact in the NFL coming out of the Big 12.

Tom Brady had a 7.5 y/a at Michigan. This is one dude you do not want to draft.
