Fire the Coach

Recommended Posts

Kinda touched on this before but Detroit seems to be the WORST town when it comes to believing the head coach is the immediate fix to a team's issues. Of course this is almost never true.

Here is exactly how every week goes in Detroit. Lions trail in a game. Doesn't matter when. Twitter lights up with "This is on Caldwell." "Fire Caldwell" "This team isn't prepared, that is on the coach" Etc etc etc.....Sometimes before 10 minutes have passed in the game. This happens every single week.

Detroit has done it FOREVER....Always believing that one change will make a difference. I actually almost thought Harbaugh might be the exception when Michigan hired him, and that is now proving, again, that firing or replacing the head coach just isn't an automatic fix. You need talent, you need a program. One guy ain't gonna do it. But in Detroit, it is shocking how much faith football (especially Lions) fans put in one guy.

Everyone of these names were going to fix the team.......all they needed.

Matt Millen

Bobby Ross

JIm Schwartz

Rod Marinelli

Steve Mariucchi

Jim Harbaugh

All run out on a rail in short order, cept Harbaugh, but he isn't that far behind.

Is this just a Detroit problem?

As a Detroit sports fan, outside of maybe Harbaugh I never had a ton of faith in any of those guys fixing everything (and even Harbaugh I doubted would have the program in an Urban Meyer-level direction). With regards to the Lions, I and everyone I know have firmly maintained that nothing would fix things as long as the Fords were in charge.

But as a Detroit sports fan, do you agree there seems to be a weird obsession with the ONE GUY making it all better?

I am sure its more than Detroit, but you nailed the Detroit way for sure. The backup QB is always the solution, the backup Goalie is always the solution. The new coach or GM is always the solution. Except for the university of Michigan slapdicks who think the answer is just being the university of Michigan. They haven't won in years and still think they are an elite college program,

It's the same way here, same way everywhere.

I remember a day when we (me too) clamored to get Michael Bishop in there over Bledsoe (and Brady who hadn't played yet)

Sports talk radio is there for mostly morons to talk and have morons call and express their moronic opinion

Thats one thing I wonder. Do these "fire everybody" slappies think that "take" will get them their own radio show? Or that somehow this makes them an expert on sports somehow? It's tired.

I am LOVING the takedown of Jesus Harbaugh right now. I'm a Spartan class of 89 but always was Ok with Michigan(my dad went to both) until they hired Harbaugh. After that the arrogance of Michigan fan quintupled----to a point of absurdity. Why even play the big ten season? Just let U of M and OSA Play for the title every year blah blah blah..

Glad to see many fans doing the Detroit thing and calling for his firing!

I'm not sure what else to do. I think you give a coach 3 years or so to show that he's the guy. If the team takes a step back the first year, no alarms. If after year 2, the team performs the same or worse, you start thinking about the next coach. If after year 3, the team is the same or worse, pull the plug. If there are signs of improvement, give it another year or two.

It's tough because there are injuries and moving pieces (coordinators and assistants) that can change things in a blink, but at the end of the day, the coach's job is to produce a winning team. That typically doesn't happen overnight.

A guy like McCarthy has proven time and time again that he's just an idiot. When that's the case, pull the plug.

#1 truth in the NFL is you cannot win without a top QB coupled with a competent coach. #2 truth in the NFL is you cannot win without a top Coach coupled with a competent QB. Pack had #1, now they have neither. I am not sure what the Lions have but I think Stafford is better than Caldwell.

For the most part, wolverine fans are delusional blowhards. They have won 1/2 of a national championship in the last 70 years and think they are some elite program. They haven't won the big ten in about 15 years, they haven't played in the big ten championship game EVER (theres only been 6 of them, but still). Consistently finish 3rd or 4th in their division under dooshbaugh...and yet they think their program is elite. A small list of my favorite u of m fan schticks:

1 - Calling The Ohio State University "Ohio" like some petty 14 year old girl who refuses to call her ex-boyfriends new girl by her real name.

2 - Little Brother. If MSU is the little brother, that easily makes the wolverines the big-boned, dateless, older sister that sits home on Saturday nights, eating bon-bons and watching Gilmore Girls reruns. Give it up, even the mini-doosh that coined the phrase realizes it was a mistake.

3 - Michigan Man. Like only a "Michigan Man" is capable of getting the team to finish 3rd in the division and end up with 3 or 4 losses every year. And the clown that coined this phrase, supposedly founded in loyalty, etc. went on to work for the Detroit Tigers and fired Ernie Harwell, one of the most beloved people in Detroit sports history.

4 - Only caring about Big Ten Championships and not considering MSU a "rival". You are getting your dicks handed to you pretty regularly on both fronts. "Those Whose Stay Will Become Champions" is the mantra posted in the um locker room.....does that assume guys are staying for 15 or 20 years?

I'll hang up and listen....

Ohhh...don't forget.....winningest program in college football history. Course they started in what? 18 something? And many of those early wins were against High School teams? And I don't mean teams that were lousy and played like HS teams, I mean ACTUAL HS teams!!

Dallas has turned into the Detroit of the South.

But we have Jason Garrett - it's all part of the process!

Dak is no Wentz, no question....... But I think Dak is still pretty good, least good enough.. What we actually need to re-evaluate is the WR corps.

Dez is slow, can't separate and drops way too many balls - and- T-Flub drops way too many balls, is reluctant to go over the middle... I think we also need to re-evaluate Linehan... I have watched the Pats get regular spare wrs open all day long, they do it by running crossing route (picks) and it always seems to work... For some reason Red can't find a way to get out little guys open.

All true, but this team needs some serious help on D.

Lions just have mediocre rosters yesr after year. Their defense which is like mid pack this year is probably one of the better defenses they have trotted out there in years. Stafford is solid but not a top qb. They never have a good running game. Ziggy Ansah is a ghost. If you are going to have a mediocre roster then you need an elite QB. Stafford isnt Rodgers.

For sure....... I applaud the efforts to get younger in the secondary - now it's time to address the LB corps... Even with S. Lee - this is an average unit at best... With Lee's age and injury history - we really need to focus on making this unit a strength... And Jerry, Red - please stop with the bargain basement projects like Jaylon Smith. Please also stop with the feisty 5'10" guys - that shiit doesn't cut it... I want playmakers, guys who can plug a hole and bring the wood... We get some legit LBs, this unit might actually be pretty good.

I still find it funny the handful of posters that mocked Eagles fans saying Wentz was going to be a bust. He had an average year, thrown into the fire, with limited weapons. Out of bumfock state.

Coaching can help a talented QB be the best he can be.....like that young coach and Goff in LA. Under old school Fisher Goff was totally inept. This year he looks totally solid.

But you can't just throw lemons at QB from the GM chair and expect the coach to make magic happen. Like with McCarthey, he was a mediocre coach long before he had to try and win games with Brett Hundley, an average roster, and a pretty beat up squad. Never understood the idea that "this is where we will see how good of a coach MM is"....after Rodgers went down.
