So this came up in the "no one in the geek club carries a cc balance cause everyone here is perfect" thread

Do you and wife share accounts? Or do you have separate accounts?
Do you keep a secret stash?

Since this IS the geek club after all, I imagine you all keep separate accounts.

Curious though...

If you are going to debate me on this bulletin board,

start with this premise..

You win.  And I don't care.

I have one, she has one, and one shared one. But the shared one is really just my, "put money in there so she doesn't have to ask me for money" account. I'm a sweetheart like that.

Separate accounts. No secret cash, though we aren't in the habit of scrutinizing each others' spending habits.

I pay almost all the bills except the gardener, property tax and whatever we owe in income taxes at year's end. She also pays her own cc's.

We have a joint account for bills and kid related things, and we each have our own personal accounts. Not because of secrecy, but because if we want something for ourselves, we just get it because it's a personal account. No need to "ask permission", which I know a lot of people have to do

I'll admit I do. I was raised where you share it all. So i do. Wife knows about every nickel I earn, and I know her earnings.
But I do feel like i have to ask for permission, or forgiveness and sometimes I hate it.
If I could do it over, separate accounts

Pretty typical Geek Club setup. She has her own checking account. I have mine. We share the Swiss bank account. I pay the mortgage on our house in the Hamptons, penthouse off Central Park and the chalet in France. I also take care of the private schools, live in nanny, chauffeur and executive chef. She pays for the stable for our horses, docking rent for the yacht, the gardener, sous chefs, helicopter pilot, security detail and the black man my son saw at the toy store on his birthday and insisted on bringing home as a present.

Pretty standard really. :dunno:

Separate checking and savings.

We also have a joint savings account.

I'd never just have only a shared account though.

Umm, yeah.  I can't believe how many of you have separate accounts.  If you have them, then you haven't found the right SO.  Just saying.

You've said this before. We both work well paying jobs and don't buy many high ticket items. If we want something, we buy it - don't need permission, though we'd discuss any major purchases.

Mainly have separate accounts because we're too lazy to set up a joint account. What advantages would a joint account offer, and how would it strengthen our marriage?

Exactly. If you share spending habits/sensibilities with you spouse and don't fight over money, why go through the hassle to set up additional accounts?

My wife's modeling money goes into her own account.

The royalties I get for a giant di1do manufacturer using me as a model go into a shared account.

I owned the island before I met her so I get the rental fees into my account. No more than $200k per month.

Joint accounts for pretty much everything.  She has a separate credit card account along with our joint account so that she can still have good credit in case I die or she dumps me.  I make sure that my direct deposit happens every other week (and does she).

Separate, because I trust my wife and I am not a control freak.   See, it works both ways.

In reality, separate, because we came into marriage with separate accounts and we never saw any reason to combine. I pay for 70% of household needs.

What is the hassle? Don't you treat all your money as collective anyway? If a bill comes, the person with enough $ in their account pays it.

The hassle is having to figure out who has more $ in their account or mentally keeping track of who paid which expense etc. rather than just paying the bill.

Joint account. My wife couldn't care less about the banking, bills, or whatever.  She has one guideline: if she is gonna spend more than $1,000 on something to let me know.  She's used the rule once in the ten years we've been married, but it wasn't even for that amount.  I think her and her former husband were both terrible at finances. She is amazed that I actually have a budget that includes savings, retirement, and any other expenses we might need AND that every $20, $50, or $100 purchase is not scrutinized.

My wife had a separate account for the first few years of our marriage.  Her mother hid money from her father in case she had to take off.  I told her it wasn't necessary because it is pretty easy to hunt down marital assets and it is all just one big pool that gets split up if we divorce.  So, we consolidated our accounts.  It is much easier now.

The only thing is that I pay the AMEX bills.  For some reason, the Mrs. would space on it every once in a great while and I hate paying interest and fees.  So, now I pay that bill.  She pays the rest.  We each can see all of the transactions in and out of our accounts and it helps to have another set of eyes in case of fraud.

Biz checking acct which we both control only for biz purposes.
