Not a charity per se. I'm trying to gain support for my friend's nephew who has fought and continues to fight the ugliest battle of his life with cancer. Poor guy at age 7 has been through the ringer that many of us may never experience in our lifetime. It doesn't end with the you're clear now. Most of us have to take meds to try and keep it at bay for some years, and they are horrible ones on your body and have awful side effects as well. You are faced with the possibility for the rest of your life that it could come back.

Even before my dx some 7 months later after Corbin's, I'm all about $ to finding a cure for this ######. If not a cure, then something has got to be just as effective as chemo. I'm not relishing pouring toxins in my body for a few months. Then you have the side effect from it which are not fun either. :(

I just figure ALS got a big boost last year, maybe if the geeks do something this year that we should share the wealth.

There are so many nasty diseases out there. Can't really say this is worse than that. I hope funds keep coming not just for cancer but for Alzheimer's, ALS, MS, ...... oh so many non-curable diseases at the moment. :(

ALS is truly the most evil if you ask me.

paralyzes you and slowly kills you, but you get to keep all your senses?

Only a true sicko would think of that

The research community is making progress. Stay positive. :)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.A new research program at UNC seeks to harness the power of the body's immune system to kill cancer, and it’s already helping patients like 7-year-old Phineas Sandi.

Phineas’ life has been anything but normal after what appeared to be a lingering cold turned out to be acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“We’d already lost one child to a different kind of leukemia,” said Phineas’ father, Carlos Sandi.

In 2013, the Sandis went through it all again, beginning a three-year journey of toxic chemotherapy in hopes of a stem cell transplant.

“It’s just incredibly difficult for the child and the family,” said Phineas’ mother, Tina Carlos.

Despite conventional measures, the cancer was still present and sure to grow.

“Ten years ago, unfortunately, Phineas probably would have passed away,” said UNC medical oncologist Dr. Jonathan Serody.

Serody says Phineas was fortunate to be accepted in a small, early phase trial for acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

At NIH his white blood cells were reprogrammed to kill the cancer.

“They’re taking your child’s own tissue, genetically modifying it, infusing it back and it gets rid of the cancer in three weeks instead of three years,” said Carols Sandi.

More than two years later, Phineas is still in remission as are most of the participants at the three trial sites outside the state. It’s providing proof of concept for this type of immunotherapy.

We consider it a vaccine, because it’s your own immune system being used to kill your tumor,” said Serody.

In a few months, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center researchers will be able to enroll patients in similar trials when the Advanced Cellular Therapeutics facility is opened this fall.

“For it to be here in North Carolina, available to everyone, is going to be amazing,” said Tina Sandi.

I guess I should clarify that you can't say this is worse than that if you are suffering from 1 of these evils. Sure my problem is 'tame' compared to most, but still, when you are in it it sure feels like it's the worst.

Alzheimer's is right up there with everything eventually is gone except your mind.

Alzheimers is easier on the person with the disease and an absolute nightmare for the families

Oh I'm a positive person. Even if I have stage IV I'll be positive. The thing is I think there really is a cure out there already for cancer, but too much money is to be made in treatments so it's not being released.

Really. The person can think clearly but is unable to do even the most simplest things at all for themselves like tie their shoe laces... Families wind up eventually putting the person in a care facility. Sure it's tough on them. I've been there with my grandma. But to say it's easier on the person with it is just... well........

And ALS is usually a few years. Alzheimers can drag on for 20 years or so. Paying for and going to visit someone who hasn't recognized you in over a decade. Both horrible diseases.

That would have to be a huge conspiracy, and in this day of age of social media, whistle blowers, etc. I highly, highly doubt that is true. I just don't buy into conspiracy theories like that.

Especially given the fact that most Pharma companies aren't at the forefront of Cancer research. That is done at Universities and the gov't funded areas.

If this thread is for real, and God knows if it is in this here greek club, and the purpose is to have geeks post vids of themselves getting ice bucketed, why not just do this in Aug and post the vid. Then make a contribution to whatever charity you like without feeling obligated to have to say where it went? Everyone has some charity near and dear to them. Bottom line is giving to the one that means the most to you. :dunno:

Just like curly said do a charity of the geeks choice, let's say $25, but have one geek post them and make it a guess the geek, if someone gets in the first three guesses, double the amount to the charity to $50
