Supreme Court rules in favor of sports betting

Recommended Posts

ESPN

The Supreme Court struck down a federal law prohibiting sports gambling Monday, giving the states a go-ahead to allow betting on sports.

The majority opinion of the court...

The legalization of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make. Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own. Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution. PASPA is not. PASPA “regulate state governments’ regulation” of their citizens. …. The Constitution gives Congress no such power. The judgment of the Third Circuit is reversed.

We've been expecting this decision for months and now it's official. Looks like Draftkings is ready to pounce and will be entering the sports betting market.

In anticipation of a favorable ruling by the Court, DraftKings has been preparing since 2017 to launch a sports betting platform for mobile, providing another advantage for the company. DraftKings is working with state regulatory officials to apply for operating licenses in those states that have already passed legislation authoring sports betting.

From Ian Rapoport...

Notes on how @NFL will react to the sports gambling news: 1. Maintaining integrity of the game is the highest’s priority. 2. It won’t rush into the biggest pot of dollars. Will slow-play this & think long-term. 3. The direct dollars will come from licensing, logos, videos & data.

Scary part of all this is does it have to do with sports betting or the world today of politics. Its also been tied into a legalized marijuana path. And no I don't want a big debate, just not sure if its 1 step forward and 2 steps back on a lot of different issues.

It's multiple steps forward. It's about states rights. We have Las Vegas that has open sports betting... but no where else? Why? If one can have it, it's up to each state to determine if they want it. If they do, the Federal Government should not be allowed to stop them. The Federal Government's main job is to protect our borders and safety, not mandating what states can and cannot do.

Yes. So true. It is the way it should be and was designed to be.

100% true. I also believe that states are doing this to help their strained budgets. Many states are simpley broke. Especially the ones with bloated public employee unions. All those fat pensions & free health care costs a TON of money. This sports bettng thing will help out. As always with anything the Govt does, follow the money or lack of it. ;)

Sadly, I think our idiot governor (in NJ), will use that revenue to give GRANTS to ILLEGALS for college.

Of course, a huge chunk of the gambling revenue will promptly go to pay the salaries and bloated pensions of a new gaming bureaucracy.

You know when sports betting gets legal all over its a matter of time before the leagues have a major scandal with players betting. Its bound to happen.

It's funny that when Christie was governor of that joke state of NJ, his family's yearly income was around $700,000, and he told an editorial board that his family is NOT "wealthy" because they have 4 kids and a "lot of things to do".

I am far far from begrudging his wife's $500,000 salary on wall street and his own $175,000 salary (although that's a bit over-paid as a public service employee not really doing anything good for NJ), but to be a governor of a state (at the time), and come out to the public and pronounce that his family is not wealthy simply shows how out of touch he was and still is in his governor afterlife.

I am glad the individual states have the control on this, as they know themselves better than any obama/clinton/pelosi federal character, but be warned, greed via government control exists at the state level as well. See New Jersey, Illinois...

Christie deserves every bit of his salary, imagine Pelosi running Jersey. The wealthy would flee like California leaving ms13 a state of there own.

I like what Christie did here. Was great? No, but he was better than Corzine (moron). Right now we're stuck with Murphy, but he's only going to get 1 term. Hopefully he doesn't screw things up so bad so that our next governor doesn't spend his first 4 years fixing Murphy's screw ups.

Christie was deserving. But he is no longer in office.

Pelosi should be laughed at upon viewing.

No, I don't think so.

I can see beating windows at all sporting events.

This new rule makes it possible.

And why not.

Thanks.

My seat-of-the-pants answer is that it won't happen in Cincinnati while Mike Brown is around. He named the stadium after his Dad, after all, rather than seek sponsorship bucks. I can't speak for other places but would imagine there'll be some corners in which it would be frowned upon.

I'm glad to see the ruling. But when I put a dollar at risk, I have a keen interest in seeing to it that the times I get paid are fat enough to cover the losses. My concern is that whenever the Gubmint okays something, that it's also going to want a cut...one that could be steep enough that the margins that accrue to the bettor become so skinny that it's not even worth the trouble to make a bet in the first place.

No chance. Casinos and race tracks first.

Exactly. I think these are going to be the only initial venues for sports betting. From what I've been told, only in Vegas, at casino's is where sports betting is allowed... and is working. It doesn't make sense for other states to go nuts on allowing any place other than existing gambling venues to participate.

Yep. This is considered "other income" on your tax return. Form W-2G. Depending on what you are betting on, poker, slots, horses, roulette, etc., there is a limit to how much you can make without tax.

Next time you watch the Price is Right and see someome win a car and a trip to Spain and Ireland and France, you can pretty well bet they can't afford to win those things.☺

Any place where you can buy a lottery ticket you will be able to bet on sports.

State lotteries and online betting will far out produce casinos and race tracks.

Well, according to the person who championed the cause, for NJ it will be casinos and race tracks. Christie stated that on NFL radio a few days ago. Maybe you have a better source. And just personally, I find it hard to believe that the local 7-11 will be accepting moneyline and under/overs and parlays, teasers and progressive parlays etc. on multiple sports. But that's just me.

Yup.

And just to add to this, have you ever been in line at the convenience store behind people buying lottery tickets? My God, that can be a 40 minute venture. They put the glasses on, lean on the elbow, pull out notes, and read off their list of pick threes for what seems like a decade.

From 1989-2007 here in Oregon I could go to the local 7-11 and bet on NFL and NBA games under/overs and parlays through the Oregon Lottery. The Oregon legislature is already talking about bringing Sports Action back and expanding it.

So for 18 years I went to 7-11 and grocery stores to place my NFL bets. I look forward to doing it again.

True, and that was limited sports betting. It only took the NCAA to pressure them to stop it in 2007. Hopefully Oregon does it right this time.

I would be very disappointed if where I live they went the lottery method instead of a real sportsbook.

The chief gaming officer in Oregon stated the following:

"What our strategy is right now, as an organization, we're very interested in exploring reintroducing sports betting back into Oregon, he said. But we're not certain that going forward with Sports Action as we had it would be a very compelling offer for the market. So we're kind of in a wait and see mode."

Are you that out of touch with the world to not know people gamble on Super-Bowl, World Series, NCAA, in bars and at work places. Don't let the legalize part cloud your judgement just because we call it a flower fund or the board gets pulled out from under the bar. A lot of types of gambling goes on, just got to be a douch-bag to not overlook it, or a pizzed off wife that can put a wrinkle in it.

This thread is about legalized sports gambling in tbe U.S. I thought. Prostitution and smoking pot exists in all states but to legalize them would be a point to discuss. Like the point of this thread about gambling. Why so angry? I find this an interesting topic. It's a big deal. Things are changing for sure.

Im just saying it goes on. Big event on TV brings people out and fun in gambling goes on. Its only going to multiply legalizeing it and bars are forced to capitalize on it because people have mancaves and basically illegal to drive after 2 beers in an hour are struggling. Most of your clubs nowadays are going public welcome, u can pay 1.25 for a beer, or 3 bucks at a bar. Bars are under attack and closeing down or trying to run more like a club and bending the rules.

I am not sure what you are talking about. I was just talking about legalized gambling. And how some states may implement it.

Gambling, marijuana, and prostitution should all be legal in all 50 states. Makes money for our crumbling infrastructure, keeps healthcare costs down, and would put a dent in human trafficking
