Anthony Kennedy retiring from the Supreme Court

Recommended Posts

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/06/27/justice-kennedy-retiring-opening-supreme-court-seat/952716001/

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring, giving President Trump and Senate Republicans an opportunity to create a solidly conservative court that could last for decades.

Kennedy's long-rumored decision to step down July 31 will touch off a titanic battle between conservatives and liberals in the nation's capital, on the airwaves, and in states represented by key senators whose votes will be needed to confirm his successor.

Kennedy, 81, has held the most important seat on the court for more than a decade: He is the swing vote on issues ranging from abortion and affirmative action to gay rights and capital punishment, often siding with the courts more liberal justices.

January? GTFO. They'll have someone confirmed by the time the new term starts in October.

Might see McConnell keep them in session. This is gigantic.

The "2" are young, Sotomayer should be an embarrassment for decades to come. Kagan has another 20.

Given the recent full scale retarded spaz of the Left, I don't think it's terrible at all to have the SC in Conservative hands... I'd love to see a more moderate Conservative, but hey.

The Ultra-Left is focking it up for a lot of good, genuine, hard working Democrats. The Ultra-Left needs to get a grip, stop being offended by everything under the sun and get back to basics.

Yes, based on recent appointments(much younger judges) though it will be 5-4 sometime to come.

Not sure that such an imbalance is that great a situation for America as a whole, it might be, but that does not seem logical.

I do think a more conservative approach would likely bring greater benefit to a wider swatch of Americans, but it could be at the expense of groups already struggling.

Court shouldn't be conservative or liberal, it was designed to be independent body free of politics(hence the lifetime appointments***). That anyone subscribes to a court that bases its findings out ideology rather than the letter of the law is a wrong formula for the country.

***Not that it would ever come to pass, since both sides want to pack the court, but an amendment limiting court terms would be a good thing. Best suggestion I've seen is 9 Justices/18 years terms. Means every presidential term there would be a 2 justice turnover.

Anyone think since it's an election year, Ole Mitch will suggest that the senate hold off on voting for a justice until after the election? :)

I'd have no problem with this as long as we have 12yr term limits in both houses of congress. And that's 12yrs total. Not 12 in the house and 12 more in the senate.

The Court should reflect the Constitution, which is Conservative/Libertarian.

I used to be anti-term limits just on the theory that what if you have a great representative why would you want him gone, but I've changed turned around on that. The entrenchment these guys have once elected has gotten absurd. Lobbies/special interests can filter so much money to campaigns that unless they diddle a kid, it's nearly impossible to get em out of office. And once the money starts they aren't your or my rep anymore.

12 years would be a good number. Might want to revisit the 2 years for congressman thing, they spend way too much time campaigning...but yeah, there could be a lot done to reform this is issue.

Can we start executing murderers efficiently? That's what I want to see. Dead within 24 hours should be the motto.

At FBGs you'd think the world was ending based on the amount of unhinged crying going on about this.

Ah crap.. what did I miss? Aren't there more conservative judges already?

5 Conservatives

4 Liberals

Replace a Conservative with a Conservative, and the math doesn't change very much.

So if Ruth dies in 2020 and the Republicans still control Congress, Mitch will hold off until after the election?
