Loading up on RB's for "upside later season"

Recommended Posts

What do you think of loading up on RB's who will get better as the season goes on? this would include rookies (obviously) and the suspended RB's.

Possibly draft the following:

Mixon

DMartin

KDixon

DCook

Perrine

KHunt

Joe Williams (SF)

These would be the guys who would get more valuable as the season progresses, the more talented rookie RB's who would likely become the starters (or at least some of them likely would).

Along with these, draft the following to get through the first few weeks:

JRodgers (Tampa)

TWest (Balt)

Thoughts?

That's a very risky game to play.

I'm not sure it will give you much of an advantage either.

I would say take one or two to stash on the bench and draft normally other wise.

I'm loading up on RBs the entire draft from beginning to end.

I didn't buy the WR nonsense last season and it's even worse this year. You have to go RB, RB.

who would you rather have out of these pairs?

Mixon or Hill

KDixon or TWest

DCook or Murray

Perrine or Kelley

KHunt or Ware

Joe Williams or Hyde

I'd say I'd take the rookie (or younger guy) in all cases except possibly Hyde and Ware

Very good and interesting question, can I ask one back?

PPR?

In a ppr I like

Mixon and Hill

Hunt and Ware

Cook and L Murray.

Non ppr

Mixon and Hill

Hunt and Ware

Cook and L Murray.

The Redskins Rb situation I'm not so sure about just yet, but I do think you need to add Thompson.

I'm still not sold on the Niners whole team situation.

And I think that the only Ravens Rb to own just might be Woodhead.

I think it really depends on the rules in your league.

it also depends on your bench.

if it is a deep league where you start 3 WR and 2 RB, and everyone has a large bench, then the late picks should mostly be RB's. I say this mostly because RB's are harder to replace when injured than WR's are.

I generally draft two top WR and one top RB in the first 3 rounds. I rarely go QB early because value can be had in the later rounds with a QB.

Usually if I can get a top 5 RB in round 1 I take him. In this scenario, I generally dont take another RB in round 2 or 3 unless someone seriously drops who (in my opinion) shouldnt be.

once I get to round 4 If I have 2 WR I am happy with, I generally move to TE and QB. I find you can get a decent WR3 for fantasy quite late in the draft, so I look to fill the TE and QB spots along with the backup RB spots.

I have found this system works well, but I also am always prepared to stray from it if value can be found by doing so.

No RB will start the season slower and finish stronger than Lynch. They'll ease him back then lean on him heavy after Week 10 or so.

True about Lynch, but the problem with him is with "value". It's going to take a pretty high pick to get him, possibly a 2nd rounder. With these younger guys you can get them cheap and load up at the other positions earlier - then when these guys reach their potential later in the year your roster can be stacked everywhere!

I agree with you about Woodhead in a PPR, easily the safest bet to produce in that backfield! No idea really who will be "the guy" once Dixon returns, they may just split between West and Dixon. My "hope" with the strategy I outlined above is that Dixon would emerge and take over but it's definitely not a given.

I disagree with Woodhead. He has missed significant time in 2 of the last 3 seasons AND he is 32 years old.

He may be fine as a RB3 but I seriously dont think the team will count on him to carry the mail for any extended period of time unless they absolutely have to.

I'd expect some form of committee where Woodhead gets most of the 3rd down work along with time when the offense is in the 'hurry up' where he is a receiver.

I wouldnt bet on much more than this.

Charles Sims of the Bucs is ahead of Jacquizz Rodgers on the depth chart.

I think the Martin/Sims handcuff is a good one and has good value.

This is a great strategy but is being a little exposed these days. The last few years I made a killing by not buying into the whole zero running back approach. I would find myself halfway through the year with multiple starting RBs because of injuries or what have you, and then many teams in were in need of them. I usually kept them although I did get some decent trades in that time. In multiple leagues I would go into week 1 free agency with 7 RBs of a 15 man roster on my team. Then I would target what additional needs I had or even another RB to fill out the final roster.

Anyway, this year you can see actual drafts of big money leagues with the same people that previously boasted zero RB approach

that are almost in complete reversal mode. Gotta be flexible this year if your league is full of people that pay attention to FF trends.

Agree, I think I will see less people and that indeed includes myself going less no Rb strategy.

I think Gordon will improve as the season wears on.

the reason:

Two rookie O linemen.

these guys may be a slight upgrade on what they had, but they ARE rookies.

They may also have a third starter on the line by the name of Tuerk. He was a 3rd round pick who basically red shirted last year.

if he improves to a point where he will start they could have new starters for every spot on the interior line.

to me, this means Gordon will underperform his draft position early in the year. As that line starts to Gel and work better as a unit, I expect Gordon's numbers will improve along with it.

the problem here is that most people have Gordon ranked really high (top 5 or 6 on the RB list) so My prediction is that some Gordon owners may panic if the numbers are not there early. It is very possible he will be a buy low between week 4 and week 6. (right around the time things will turn around in my opinion)

I had Gordon last year and got him late. Not comfortable taking him in the first. He felt TD dependent and his running style screams injury.

Boa w positional balance. There is more than one way to draft. My preference is to simply make sure I have a rb and a we in the first 2 rounds so I don't feel compelled to draft to fill holes later on

I'm not high on power backs at all especially in PPR. Guys like Blount, Lynch, AP and Hyde are a dying breed. The advanced passing game and proliferation of injuries means coaches just don't care to run their best tailback into the line of scrimmage 15 to 20 times a game anymore. It's about getting them the ball in open space where they can make a guy miss.

On my DND list:

Lynch

Hyde

Hill

Henry

L Murray

Lacy

Only power back I trust is AP, and I barely trust him. If I could get him at a value pick sure, but not at his ADP. I am far more interested in the younger guys like Mixon, Hunt and Perrine.

The #1 guy on my list of late RB's who will have upside later isn't even on the OP's list...

I'll be drafting Jamaal Williams from Green Bay all day long in every one of my leagues this year. Call me cynical but I don't see Montgomery being anything more than a situational player over the long haul.

Another guy I'm taking in all my leagues is B Oliver. Again, the cynic in me just can't picture a world where Melvin Gordon stays healthy all season again.

If we're talking PPR...I couldn't possibly disagree more. Been doing really well the last 5 years going WR heavy and just taking upside RB's late.

If you're talking standard scoring...that's a horse of a different color.

When the Ty Montgomery situation doesn't pay off for the Packers, is J Williams the for sure next one up?

Or does A Jones have any say in it?
