I read the other day that airlines in the FAA aren't allowing those bags to be carried on unless you remove the embedded battery. Which, what's the point then?

Its likely the opposite. Generally, you can carry external charging batteries on the plane, but you cant check them in.

 

Theory being, I suppose, that if they burst into flames in the cabin, they can be dealt with. In the belly of the plane, not so much.
