Gruden back to the Bucs?

Recommended Posts

From Roto:

Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds believes there’s "interest on both sides" between the Bucs and Jon Gruden.

Gruden has been broadcasting with ESPN since getting fired from Tampa in 2008. He’s turned down multiple offers from teams, but hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching. With Dirk Koetter on the hot seat, it’s possible the Bucs reunite with Gruden after the season. Tampa has a franchise quarterback in Jameis Winston and a playoff-caliber roster. There are behind-the-scene rumors the Bucs are the job Gruden wants.

I think it's a fantastic idea. If he's a coach again, I don't have to listen to him try to be an announcer.

He didnt impress when he was here the first time. Gruden was brought in to improve the offense, and it was lackluster with him. They need to hire someone with a proven track record on offense.

If this version of the Bucs can get better of def, they could be a playoff team.

Gruden has been away from the sidelines for a long time. You have to wonder if their ability doesn't slip.

It was Dungys team and Gruden knew Oakland inside and out. It was a perfect storm for the Bucs...not because Gruden was an amazing coach. The Bucs offense looked just as bad as Koetters after Gruden took over. He just happened to inherit one of the best defensive units of all time.

According to Gruden, nothing today is done as well as it used to be done, even if his 'good old days' aren't really all that old. So he likely thinks he'd have an edge on all these 'new fangled' types who don't know what real football is.

Maybe he's right... and maybe that demonstrates a disconnection from the game today. The game is officiated differently and there are more restrictions on how you practice, etc.

Got to believe Gruden's life as an announcer doesn't demand the long hours and commitment of an NFL coach. Not saying he couldn't do a better job than some of today's coaches but you wonder if he would really want to go back to that role.

The announcer's life certainly seems easy.

But you don't win anything either.

Gruden has to be the most over-rated coach of all time. Being on tv helps really your legacy.

It's the reason Howie Long is in the Hall of Fame... no tv career, no HOF.

Disagree about Howie. Only 84 sacks, but he was a guy people had to gameplan for. ProFootballReference puts him in with guys like Belitnikoff, Deacon Jones, and Kenny Stabler in terms of career value.

Long was a dominating player inside of that Raiders def line.

Teams had to adjust too him, which did hurt his numbers, but when it comes to the big uglys it's not about numbers, it's about the interruption of the other teams lack of ability too beat him.

And he was so quick of that line, that made it a lot easier for his teammates to win their own personal battle.

"Jameis got a grip of something supposedly."

Hey, he was just doing what his President told him to do. "When you're a STAR .. you can do anything! Grab 'em by the pu$$sy!!!" :overhead:
