Currently we have 2 more playoffs left at the end of the 2018 and 2019 seasons.  There are 4 teams left alive to win the title.

1. Patriots - 2 wins (Seahawks, Falcons), 2 losses (Giants, Eagles)

Sitting pretty with 4 super bowl appearances and 2 wins. They are in the lead but have not won it YET.

2.  Eagles - 1 win (Patriots)

If they win the next 2 super bowls, they are team of the decade outright.  However, if they win just 1 of the next 2, they could tie the Patriots with 2 super bowl wins apiece, and the Eagles will have a head to head win over the Patriots, so you could argue they are the team of the decade.  This would be strengthened if they make both of the last 2 super bowls.

3. Seahawks - 1 win (Broncos), 1 loss (Patriots)

They have a shot to win team of the decade but they need to win the next 2 super bowls.  They DID make the playoffs so the dream is still alive.  Russell Wilson is in his prime and they rebuilt their defense, so it is possible.  They have a loss to the Patriots so winning just 1 more super bowl probably isn't enough to pass the Patriots.

4. Ravens - 1 win (49ers)

If the Ravens win the next 2 super bowls, they will stand as the only team with 3 wins and will win team of the decade.

All other teams are eliminated because they cannot reach 3 wins and even if they reach 2 wins, they probably wouldn't pass the Patriots who have 4 appearances.  The Packers, Giants, and Broncos all just got eliminated because, while they all won 1 super bowl this decade, they can no longer win 3 because they missed the playoffs this year.

New England would have to fall flat these last couple years and Seattle would have to end it really strong to entertain any team other than the pats as being the team of the decade. Philly could finish strong, but not sure they could be considered the team of the past 10 years.

If the Eagles win 3 super bowls in a row this decade, I don't think it is questioned that they are team of the decade.  The Cowboys were the team of the 90s but they did nothing past 1995.

Chiefs of the '20s

Chiefs are sitting pretty with a kid franchise QB and once Rivers retires there is no other franchise QB in his division to worry about.  Incredibly bright future.  Luck and Watson may cancel each other out a lot by fighting for the AFC South.  Browns are sitting pretty as once Big Ben retires they've got the only franchise QB in the AFC North.  We could he heading for several Chiefs / Browns AFC title games in the 2020s.  Both Mahomes and Mayfield could be fighting for AFC supremacy next decade and both were drafted by John Dorsey.

Update:

We are down to TWO candidates for team of the decade:

1. Patriots - 2 wins (Seahawks, Falcons), 2 losses (Giants, Eagles)

Sitting pretty with 4 super bowl appearances and 2 wins. They are in the lead but have not won it YET.

2.  Eagles - 1 win (Patriots)

Had the Bears made that kick, it would have clinched team of the decade status for the Patriots.  But it was not to happen just yet.

I think it’s a pretty clear issue, the Patriots get the vote.

This is already decided no matter what - pats are it for the 2nd straight decade. Not even a discussion. The sustained excellence. The decade is 2010 to 2019, playoffs every year, conf championship every year except 1, SB participant 4 years, wins 2 years.

No brainer.

Patriots are team of the decade thanks to the Saints come from behind victory over the Eagles.  The Eagles may have been able to stake a claim had they won the last 3 in the decade.  That's gone now.  Patriots stand alone unchallenged.  Congrats to them and their fans.

Sure, the Pats are probably the team of the decade but this award also has a mirror award: the AFC East has been the worst division in the last decade and really longer than that. It has to be said that NE gets the mother of all red carpets rolled out for them every season. Automatic division title. Automatic bye week for playoffs. Always an easy playoff home game too. Heck, other than the chiefs this year and a few ravens teams, you could argue that the entire AFC just sucks.

But whatever, yeah, team of the decade. Sounds good. :)

But eight straight afc title games is amazing.

The thing is, the belief that the AFC East has been the worst division in football is more perception than reality. It was true this season, but in the previous 9 seasons, the Bills, Jets and Dolphins actually had the 2nd best winning pct in non-division games compared to the #2,3 and 4 teams in all the other divisions. Even factoring in this season, they're still 3rd.

Ha ha ha just stop it. In the last 13 seasons that New England has made the AFC Championship Game, the combined record of the other AFC East teams was 275-365. That's a winning percentage of .430.

In that same span, the Patriots division record was 64-14-2. In no year did New England go worse than 4-2 in the division. It's a winning formula- a bye week followed by a divisional home game in January against a team which played the previous week.

Ummmm - the AFC as a whole has been pretty inept as of late.  Gone are the Ravens, Colts and Broncos that could and did put up resistance and sometimes knocked NE out.  Its amazing how not dominant NE is when their opponents are actualy worthy or they dont get the playoff games in Foxboro.  Basically, every season NE gets 5 automatic wins right off the bat and then you throw in a few more cream puffs which equates to a very EASY ride to the automatic bye-week and play off home game against some crappy .500 team.

Look - NE has been extremely consistent.  Cant argue that.  But the AFC East and also the rest of the AFC has been wildly INconsistent.  Sorrry but this has to be factored into the discussion.  Thats not the Pats fault so its fair to say that tha rest of AFC has to "get with it" but IMO it does factor into this whole thing.

I sometimes wonder if big name head coaches refuse to join the AFC East because they don't want to have to beat out Belichick and Brady for division titles.  Bruce Arians, the Harbaughs, Mike Shanahan, Tony Dungy, Pete Carroll, John Gruden.  None of them went to the AFC East.  Look at all the ex head coaches in the booth or on a talk show set not coaching.  Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, etc.  Why don't they unretire and get in there and try to beat Belichick and Brady and take a job in the AFC East?  Are they cowards?

The most epic thing I could image is if maybe 10 years ago, Jimmy Johnson took the Jets job, Dungy took the Dolphins job, and Cowher took the Bills job and they all tried to beat Belichick.  That would be some really entertaining NFL.

I think it has to do with the QB for the most part.  Most of the AFC Championships either did or should have included Brady and Manning for the past decade or two.

Nobody is assigning blame, simply stating facts. It's been a traditionally weak division for years, several here have seen this and commented. Hell, the Bills lived on that formula to lose four super bowls in the early 90's.

Did you calculate and compare the winning percentages of the #2, 3 & 4 teams in rest of the divisions during that timeframe?

In the last 10 years, during the Pats current consecutive division winning streak, the #2, 3 & 4 teams' records for each division, in non-division games are:

NFC North - .483

AFC North - .462

AFC East - .453

AFC West - .453

NFC South - .433

NFC East - .432

NFC West - .417

AFC South - .373

(Going into this season, the Bills, Jets and Dolphins were actually 2nd best, with a .467 winning percentage against the rest of the league. They crapped out this season, going 10-20)

So, in 3/8ths of their games, the Pats play teams that have the 3rd best record against the rest of the league, and still average 4.7 wins/year against these teams, because they've been that much better than them.

NE also plays a first game schedule so they play every division winner in the AFC from the previous year.

Saying the AFC sucks while the Patriots remain consistent/dominant is an unintentional complement to the Pats.  Teams do ebb and flow.  Sustained excellence is rare in the NFL.  That being said, this is the most vulnerable NE team I've seen in some time.
