The justices ruled 7-2 that a 25-year-old federal law that has effectively prohibited sports betting outside Nevada cannot block states such as New Jersey that want to set up sports books. The ruling could set the stage for other states to expand legalized gambling as a source of government revenue.

It's all about corruption. The major sports leagues and the NCAA don't want this to happen. So then the next move will be Federal legislation.

Given how positively swamp tastic DC is right now, I figure the odds are actually pretty good legislation would pass.

Yeah, like the NCAA is a bunch of upstanding citizens who only want what's best for the students who happen to be athletes.

DK is happy..

Dear xxxxxx,

Today the United States Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). This decision legalizes sports betting - and it's great news for sports fans. DraftKings believes life is more fun when you have skin in the game, so we'd like to share what today's news means for you, our valued customers.

Since DraftKings was founded in 2012, our mission has been to bring fans closer to the games they love. Today's ruling will allow us to further drive fan engagement by harnessing our proven technology to provide you with an innovative online sports betting product.

DraftKings is uniquely positioned to succeed in this dynamic, new market. We are the world's largest daily fantasy sports platform with almost 10 million users. As an American company, we have a unique, authentic understanding of American sports fans, and already have strong relationships with professional leagues and teams.

So, when can you expect to place a wager through DraftKings? The timing will depend on when individual states move to pass the necessary legislation and set up the regulatory framework that will allow online sports betting. We're hopeful states will move quickly, but lawmakers need to hear directly from fans like you.
You can take action right now by using our tool to contact your lawmakers.

Even with today's announcement, DraftKings remains fully committed to daily fantasy sports, which will continue to be a major focus for the company. In fact, sports betting and DFS already co-exist in many parts of the world. This powerful combination, combined with live streaming sports and original content, will position DraftKings - The Game Inside The Game - at the center of your fan experience. To celebrate with us, play tonight in the NBA $10K Celebration Free Contest

As always, we'll keep you in the loop every step of the way, so be on the lookout for updates. For now, this is a huge win for sports fans everywhere and we're excited for another opportunity to bring our fans closer to the games they love.

Sincerely,

DraftKings

I've been on-line gambling for 15+ years. Being illegal or legal doesn't effect me.

Then again, I don't have thousands of dollars in my account that needs government protection.

There is a random chance at hitting it big. Its worth the fun of trying if one has the expendable money imo. Plus the private leagues are always fun.

Actually I do, if the Feds ever decriminalize.  Probably the biggest reason why they won't.

Crypt keeper Ginsberg would stay on the Court if she was on life support. Sotomayer is to the left, what Thomas is accused of being on the right. She is a complete partisan nincompoop.

So what does this end up actually looking like?

Online sites dominate and charge stupid fees?

Existing Indian casinos open sports books?

Betting windows at every stadium and arena in the land?

States drag their heels and nothing happens in my lifetime?

States drag their heels and nothing happens in my lifetime?

States that want it already have everything in place.  States that don't will make laws forbidding it or drag feet.

IMO, On-line sites are still banned, this was strictly about States rights for sports gambling.

Taxachusetts only last year or the year before, okayed full casinos. I don't see any reason to not okay sports betting too

Once the Casinos are in, they run the show.

I figure Delaware will be first to legalize it.  Then New Jersey. Then the entire NE.

Oddly enough, many of the casino corporations don't want this to happen. More on that in a separate post.

The major sports leagues have been against this all along. They want every dollar that can be derived from their product. Their players. Their game. Think about it, grocery stores can't even use the word Super Bowl when advertising snacks for the big game. Churches can't have a Super Bowl watching party.
Etc

Now that this is passed, and it looks inevitable that it will spread, the next challenge will be for the various leagues to argue for a significant cut of all the proceeds. Once that's worked out? Then it's game on.

Vegas doesn't give the leagues a cut. That doesn't mean some corrupt state governments won't let the leagues get a piece after the requisite payoffs, but they really don't have to at this point.
