There is a renewed push to extend the protective netting at baseball stadiums after a young fan was hit and injured by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium Wednesday.
The 2-year-old girl stayed in the hospital overnight for observation but is expected to be OK.
"She's doing alright, just keep her in your thoughts," the victim's father said.
A 105 mile-an-hour foul ball went off the bat of Todd Frazier and hit the little girl in the face during the game between the Yankees and the Minnesota Twins.
The game was delayed for about 4 minutes while she was attended to and then carried from the seats in the bottom of the fifth inning.

I don't have a problem bringing a 2-year-old to a baseball game, just don't sit down close to the field where that can happen...

What is the point? they can't enjoy themselves, they don't sit still.

DUMB!

I'd say 6, maybe is the youngest. I'd bring one.

Netting around a baseball field? Crazy talk.

We have it at Snowflake Park up here in Boston

I vote more net. I wouldn't take a kid that age but, I don't really care, I'm surprised there haven't been a few deaths from that sort of thing.

Baseballs and broken bats are pretty dangerous.

Most people will not react fast enough to those kinds of foul balls. I don't sit in those seats because my attention wanders

Most people?

at any given moment, 75% of them are looking at their phones. could happen to anyone

Yeah. So put up a net. I don't see why it's an issue. Just another thing for people to complain about. Might as well complain that batters are sissy for wearing helmets, and catchers are panzies for wearing catching gear.

Had nets in NHL stadiums for many years.

Put a helmet on the kid if they're that concerned.

She had one, but it hit her in the face.

also what's with little leaguers and younger wearing cages on their helmets? Really? at the plate maybe, but in the field?

Yes, and it's a good idea. Someone can look away for something actually important and get drilled. Put the nets up

I'm suggesting they get her one of the ones with cages.

Why punish everyone else......

"What jerkoff brings a 2 year old to a focking baseball game?????????"

Me and my son is 3. He has attended 2 tigers games, a lions game, a wings game , a nascar series truck race and last years Michigan/vs Wisconsin game. I watch him like a hawk. Never had any problems.

I'm not spending 100 bucks to force my kid to sit for 3 hours and do something he won't remember and probably is too young to enjoy.

Why not bring him for a 100 dollar steak?

Ah, but modern parents treat their kids like an accessory. Like a teacup chihuahua.

My sister in law calls her daughter her mini me. Takes her everywhere, buys them matching designer purses, takes her to the spa with her for treatments. Shes 7.

I'll defend the dad here.

Took my toddler to a hockey game a while back. I'd only been to one hockey game at the arena before so I didn't really know the configuration well. Got some seats where I thought we'd be protected by the glass yet still close to the action.

Turns out the glass was really short, or at least that's how it seemed to me. So we had pucks flying everywhere.

Fortunately this is some little local minor league deal so we were able to just relocate to empty seats further up and out of the danger zone. But what I'm saying is I can see how this happens.

Now I don't know that more netting is the answer. Maybe they should have specific sections designated as especially safe for young families or something, just so you know where to sit :dunno:

Yankee stadium has a family section. But the tickets that somebody gave this guy obviously weren't there. Think about it, what kind of moron would lay out that kind of scratch for a 2 year old?

A friend of mine took his kid to a Pirate game about 10 years ago, kid was 13. He got hit by a foul ball and spent a month in the hospital. Age doesn't matter.

I love my 4 year old more than anything and I bring him just about everywhere.

He's nowhere near being mature enough to handle a sporting event or movie.

age has nothing to do with it, so far as being hit

that's not the conversation now

I'm for more netting. Bats go flying. 100mph++ foul balls. Everyone can be at risk. It seems like common sense, and I go to a dozen games a year. Wouldn't bother me a bit if they put up nets down the lines.

This exactly. What these parents really mean is “I was too cheap to hire the babysitter.”.

Take down all the nets, better chance getting a foul ball that way.

Take them down at hockey games too, it's your own focking fault if you're not paying attention

A ticket and snacks at Yankee Stadium likely cost more than a babysitter.

I totally guessed wrong, I thought it would be baseball mitts that fit babies...or maybe a baby sized catcher's mask

I was thinking maybe an anti-foul-ball missile defense system.

Not at all. I don't want to go if I can't take my kid. He's my shadow and he does what I do when it comes to sporting events. He is a well behaved kid who enjoys being around people. We have went to many events and none of them were a problem. Never did he get out of hand and not one person looked at him as a pain in the asss. Quite the opposite. At every venue I have taken him to the fans around have freaking loved him. I was super worried at the U of M wisconsin game last year as both were ranked high and there could have been some rowdy people. Not even close. Sooo many wisconsin fans gave him high 5s as we were walking. The wisconsin fan in front of us tried to show him how to wolf whistle. To each their own but if I am going. So is he.

This is going to be a safer and more rewarding mentality when he is 5 is all I’m saying.
