Picking the side: 14-2

Against the spread: 15-1

Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks (-7)

Seattle offense is #9 with 375.8 yards per game, Green Bay is #6, 386.1 yards per game

Seattle averages 5.3 yards per rush and #1, Green Bay is #10 with 4.4 ypr

Seattle is #27 passing offense, Green Bay is #8

Seattle is #6 in yards per pass play with 7.7, Green Bay is #2 with 8.3

Seattle is #1 total defense giving up 267.1 yards per game, Green Bay is #15, giving up 346.4 ypg

Seattle gives up 15.9 points per game and #1, Green Bay gives up 21.8 and is #13

Seattle defense is #8 in allowing 3rd conversions, Green Bay is #18

Seattle is the #3 rush defense, Green Bay is #23

Seattle allows 3.4 yards per rush which is #2, Green Bay allows 4.3 which is #19

Seattle is #1 vs the pass, Green Bay #10

Seattle allows 6.3 yards per pass play and #2, Green Bay 6.9 ypp and #10

Seattle has outgained 14 of 17 opponents in total yards

Green Bay has outgained 13 of 17 opponents in total yards

Seattle has won their last 7 games by double digits, covering every game

Green Bay has won 6 of their last 7, covering 3 times.

At home, Green Bay average final score was to win 38-20. On the road, the average score was a 21-23 loss.

On the road, Green Bay allows 138 yards rushing per game, 4.6 yards per rush.

On the road, against the 3 best defenses they faced, Green Bay put up 16, 13, and 7 points.

What do the numbers tell us? Nothing extremely surprising. Green Bay passes the ball a bunch, Seattle runs the ball quite a bit. As a result, the teams aren’t far apart in total offense, #6 vs. #9. And Seattle is averaging 7.7 yards per pass play to Green Bay’s 8.3, so it’s not that Seattle isn’t as efficient in throwing the ball, it’s just that they choose not to do so with the same frequency. I think the biggest issue is on the defensive side of the ball.. Green Bay throws the ball better than runs it, but they are going up against the best pass defense in football. On the other side of the ball, Seattle will be running the ball against the #23 ranked rush defense. There is a decided edge here. Strength vs strength, but also strength (Seattle rushing attack) vs weakness (GB rush defense). It’s not imagined, as Murray had a pretty good game last week running against Green Bay.

Seattle had trouble putting Carolina away last week until the second half. Carolina actually finished ahead in total yards, 362 to 348. Why? Well, kudos to the Carolina coaching staff in putting together a nice game plan. They controlled the clock, moved the sticks, kept some drives going, and got garbage time production. Not that it was all bad news for Seattle, who had the decided advantage of better yards per play average of 6.7 to 5.3; Seattle had more explosive plays during the game. On a yards per pass play, Seattle had the advantage 10.3 to 6.1. Still, Newton made some good throws in intermediate to deep routes into the Cover 3. But in my opinion, the biggest issue was the surprising scratch of starting corner Byron Maxwell. He didn’t play, suffering from an upper respiratory illness and was on the sidelines. His replacement, Tharold Simon, had a miserable game. Newton threw at Simon 10 times, who was covering Kelvin Benjamin for a healthy portion of the game. How many of those 10 targets did Newton complete? 10. Yep. About half of Carolina’s passing offense was a pitch and catch game against Tharold Simon. Fortunately for Seattle, Maxwell is going to play this week. Did anybody else notice Marshawn Lynch vomiting during the game on the sidelines? Yeah, he was under the weather too, as he only ran for 59 yards in limited action.

Well, Carolina, as many other teams down the stretch, game planned to take away the Seattle running game. And Wilson continues to beat defenses with his throwing. Sure, he’s scrambling around and running the read option. But his release time has decreased significantly lately, to somewhere around 2.2 seconds from snap to pass attempt. It’s getting harder to sack him, not because the line is pass blocking any better, because they still suck at that, but Wilson is processing information and making decisions faster. It also helps when you have WRs making one handed 61 yard TD catches. Seattle will run right at Green Bay, take their shots passing the ball. Nothing fancy. On defense, they pass rushed with emphasis on containment last week to bottle up Newton’s running lanes This week, zero emphasis on containment and it’s full on pillaging and plundering at a sitting duck. That calf injury by many estimates is going to take 4 months to heal. Sometimes you can take a step and be fine, sometimes you take a step and it feels like you got shot. My theory is that when Rodgers starts to feel pressure from a defensive line, he will start to check down with frequency, throwing plenty of short passes. Kind of what he did in the first game of the season. That’s an issue against the fastest defense in the league, and the best tackling defense in the league. You would have to be perfect to execute that kind of game plan to win, which San Diego achieved early this season vs. Seattle and nobody else. It’s also the area of the field patrolled by Kam Chancellor and Bobby Wagner. I suspect Seattle will take away the Green Bay run and let Rodgers challenge the secondary. The rush defense is missing a few key DT, but overall when the defense wants to stop the run, they will. It just wasn’t the point of emphasis last week. The way to beat the Seattle secondary is with dynamic WRs and a strong armed QB trying to hit the seams deep. I don’t think Green Bay can do this, with a cripple at QB. This isn't the Dallas leaky defense that they are facing this week. But Rodgers may still force the ball a bit because of lack of mobility in the pocket. I will go on record predicting 2 INTs for Green Bay. What? Didn’t Aaron Rodgers have some kind of magical season. Yeah, and he only threw 5 picks. Well, Russell Wilson only threw 7 picks. And when you add in Rodgers 2 fumbles lost vs. Wilson’s 0 fumbles lost, that makes them equally turnover prone this season. Rodgers threw more passes, but Wilson ran the ball more. Pretty equal. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Matt Flynn inserted into the game by the end, a somewhat surreal image given his history with both of these teams.

Green Bay is a very good team, but they are so much better at home than on the road. They lost at Seattle by 20, lost at Detroit by 12, lost at New Orleans by 21, lost at Buffalo by 8. They beat Chicago, Miami, Minnesota, Tampa Bay. Eh, not a great resume on the road. Seattle has an extra day of rest. Seattle is 25-2 at home with Russell Wilson starting. Seattle is 13-1 in prime time games in their last 14. Oh, and the boisterous home crowd is usually a factor.

Where oh where to begin?

To start, congrats to Green Bay for a fine season. They are a very good team and I wish them continued success in the future. We've seen them in the playoffs a couple of times recently, and I suspect that we will again down the road, soon. I can't begin to imagine how tough it must be to be a Green Bay fan right now, after having that game in the pocket, and having it snatched away. There are many ties between the Seattle and Green Bay franchises, between players switching from one to the other, front office staff migrating, and other stuff.

Mike McCarthy had a bad day. I didn't like a number of his game decisions. I kept saying to myself throughout most of the game "this could be so much worse, it's incredibly fortunate the 'Hawks are still in the game". My pre game analysis was hit or miss. Did Seattle have the better defense? Sure. They were constantly put in bad spots by 5 turnovers, and held Rogers to a pedestrian passing game and only gave up one TD. Those 5 FGs could have been more productive by sticking some into the endzone. I was wrong about the calf injury to Rodgers. It really didn't limit his mobility. I was appalled by the lack of pressure applied by the Seattle defensive line. Credit to the Green Bay offensive line and Rodgers generally pulling the trigger quickly in letting the ball go. Knowing how relatively good Rodgers mobility was, I would have picked a closer final score. However, Seattle had a very productive day running the ball, as expected. Lost in the shuffle of the game was that Seattle outgained Green Bay by 91 yards. About 200 of the 397 total Seattle yards came in the last 4 minutes of regulation and overtime. Seattle had the better defense. In my writeup, I noted the lack of turnovers by both QBs this season. Correctly predicted two picks by Rodgers. What nobody could have guessed was 5 turnovers by Seattle's offense (after only 13 all season) and 4 picks by Wilson (after 7 all season). Wilson had two balls tipped and picked, but that's beside the point. Russell Wilson had the worst game of his career for 56 minutes. There was a dirty hit by Clay Matthews to his head which may have knocked him woozy for a bit. But that's not an excuse. He made some awful throws and awful decisions. Green Bay also played solid pass defense. There is no way of knowing how different this game could have been if Seattle didn't turn the ball over so, so much. And what the anguish would have felt like if Green Bay steps on Seahawks neck early on. But the script had Green Bay jump to a 16 point lead and take Seattle out of it's comfort zone and overall game plan. Green Bay came in prepared.

The craziness of the finish is still leaving me woozy. Our Ginger punter finished the game with the same number of TD passes as Aaron Rodgers. What a terrific fake FG. I honestly can't remember the last time this team tried one. A decade ago? In the end, Wilson got his sh!t together and Lynch became a steamroller. We know how unlikely it is to recover an onside kick, but that backup TE for Green Bay, Bostic, what the fock was he thinking? Jordy Nelson was right behind him. It's a crazy game. Chris Matthews hasn't caught a ball all year. He's somehow active for this game, and makes a huge recovery. Unreal. Was Gary Gilliam active due to the Justin Britt injury. I don't know. But he's the guy that caught the fake FG pass. Unreal. And then the 2 pt conversion, that ball was in air longer than the plane going from Seattle to Green Bay. Knock it down. You can't return it. Ball is dead. Knock it down. And then Seattle goes prevent defense, and I'm thinking this is the Atlanta playoff game all over again, letting Green Bay go down the field in the end. Except it wasn't. Seattle follows the script they used to beat Denver this year and marched down the field in OT to win on the first drive. Earl Thomas dislocated his shoulder, Richard Sherman hyperextended his elbow, Russell Wilson probably had a concussion. And they kept playing? Hey, that's guts, but I have to wonder about our medical staff. But it's not like they were going to taser them and keep them on the sidelines. Sherman was tackling guys with one arm.

Five turnovers. Down 12 with 4 minutes to go. And still win. With such huge stakes. The Seattle Seahawks have a lot of heart and determination. Now, let's try to hold on to the damn ball.

Way to go Hawks! Kept fighting on. Wow, what a game.

Whooo

SB again baby.

Good summary; one quibble.

That was not a dirty hit on Wilson by Matthews. That was a football play; nothing more. Matthews led with his shoulder; hit Wilson's shoulder, and grazed his jaw, snapping his head. There was no helmet to helmet hit there. There was also nothing that Matthews could have done there, and - quite frankly - there was a helmet to helmet hit instigated by a Seattle defender on a Packers WR shortly thereafter, and no call was made.

What I'll say is that as good of an NFL player that Clay Matthews is, he's developing a reputation league wide as a dirty hitter. Russell Wilson was engaged with another player, and the end result was that Matthews came in and ended up hitting him in the helmet with his helmet. OK, Wilson was downfield getting in on the play, and is somewhat fair game. Troy Vincent has gone on record as saying QBs are a protected player at all times and has fined players for doing what Matthews did. And Matthews will get a hefty fine for the hit. No doubt. I totally get that when player launches themselves in the air towards a player, movement can lead to accidental hits to the head. But watching that replay, I came away convinced he targetted Wilson's head and it was blatant. If I were a Green Bay, I'd probably consider your version. Using an eye test, it looked dirty.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that, fortunately, you do not represent the rest of us.

One of the gratifying aspects of being a longtime Seahawks' fan has been (in addition to supporting the team) sharing the company of a class group of fans. It is rare to see the sort of mean-spirited response from a 'Hawks fan that you have demonstrated here.

Of course, maybe I've just been hanging out in the wrong places all of these years. If that's the case, carry on. :)

Win or lose, Seattle better do whatever it takes to get a true #1 WR and, most importantly, wrap up Lynch for the next 2-3 years. He is the heart of this team, and they would be watching from the sidelines right now had it not been for his beastly effort on Sunday.

Offensively speaking, Wilson didn't win that game. Neither did Baldwin or Kearse. Lynch won that game.

Maybe it's just me...but I think Russell struggles in the rain/wind. I do believe he is now 6-0 but I think the weather affects his handling of the ball.

I was at the home game vs Oakland and against that team at home, Russ had 0 tds and a pick and just looked off target. The next home game vs the Giants where the weather was similar, he threw 0tds and two picks. Sunday's game, 4 picks and vs New Orleans in the playoffs last year, 100 yards no tds, no picks.

I'm confident he'll rip it indoors at the Superbowl and play noticeably better.

I agree with this.... I've noticed this too. We usually pull it out, but the game always seems closer and Wilson has an unspectacular day in the rain and never looks right.

For the life of me I don't know why Wilson didn't run more though that being the case. The option was never used much until the very end when we finally did some damage.

Bevel had one of those games that gets my blood boiling I think.

The NFL better make sure the Seahawks win. I doubt anybody outside of Boston wants to see the Patriots win after that BS.

I'm a Giants fan, you can all thank us for beating the cheaters no matter what they tried. But now Seattle, it's your turn, don't lose, for the good of mankind.

Rodgers has been off since he hurt his calf. I can see how that would affect accuracy and velocity, and it sure did.

Well, the league has fined Marshawn Lynch for adjusting his athletic cup, about to fine Lynch again for not talking to the media on Sunday, fined Sweezey for a personal foul, and even fined Chris Matthews for shaking hands with Marshawn Lynch in the endzone. All this within days of the game. On top of threatening to suspend Lynch for wearing gold cleats on his shoes.

The league caught New England tampering with game day footballs. And.....nothing.

:wall:

And another thing, if Lynch were a bit smarter, he would get a doctor to officially diagnose him with a social anxiety disorder, and then sue the fock out of the league over the NFL forcing Lynch to suffer through his disability. If Seattle wins the Superbowl, I would not be surprised to see him retire. The league does realize that they are now forcing Seattle fans to grab their crotches throughout future games in support of Lynch, right? That's the endgame, a stadium full of crotch grabbing fans next year. That should go over well on national TV.

Why on earth would a handshake bring on a fine???

Because the hand happened to be in the vicinity of his crotch. The league thought Chris Matthews grabbed his own junk, despite all video and picture evidence to the contrary. They were simply having a hand shake. Poor guy spend most of the year on the practice squad, gets on the active roster, and then gets hit with a hefty fine that is going to hurt like hell in his already empty wallet. For shaking Lynch's hand.

The NFL is a joke.

The Seattle Times ran a pretty cool Q & A with John Schneider today:

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/seahawks/2015/01/23/q-and-a-with-seattle-general-manager-john-schneider/?syndication=rss

I particularly liked his comments about Marshawn:

On if there’s anything he can say about the conjecture about Marshawn Lynch’s future: “No. I mean, he’s under contract next year. He’s a warrior. Goes out there every weekend and lays it on the line. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a better running back in the National Football League.”

On if he is tired of his act: “No. I kind of love his act.”

No. I think there is precedent for the league/sponsor getting someone else to say that catch-phrase, although I can't remember the specifics.
