I've been gone for sixteen years and know full well that I am culturally out of touch and have been left behind. I don't much care though because IMO modern isn't better.

 

So I was going along fine until now. Watching these videos, I had never feared that I was also losing the ability to communicate in English.

I have never heard these terms for animals before, so I think you're ok... for now. The language is evolving pretty quickly though. Amazing how hard society worked to communicate properly, only to have the recent generations pull a 180 and believe that's all a waste of time.

You know, I want desperately to jump in and agree with you on that, but if I'm honest with myself, I just can't.

 

For example, like any good white person, I am absolutely infuriated by the whole ax and ask thing.

 

Then go back to our omniscient and ever-wise founding fathers and before then and you see words like 'afske'. And you're like what the shyt?

 

Turns out, what we consider to be now proper Elizabethan English was really utter crap. And if you spend much time in Britain, you'll still see remnants of that and hear it in various permutations of the language.

 

Jesus, Cockney makes coon-asses sound positively Shakespearean. And oh by the way? Shakespeare had his share of freewheeling with the language too.

 

so, at the risk of being a full-on pendant about this, it really wasn't until the widespread distribution of literature that we finally started to see some standardization of both word usage and spelling.

 

Still, stop making up new words every fincking month guys. Grr.'swag' isn't a word.
