Let's talk a little bit about this guy. Kind of under the radar. Going in the late 2nd in most mocks, but almost like a consolation prize after missing out on Mcaffrey. Not a guy I get excited to take.

 

He had a great rookie year, but struggled a bit last year. Dropped 1 yard per carry which is a little bit of a concern. Maybe he was battling injuries. The emergence of cohen is another concern. Too explosive not have in the lineup.

 

Any homers out there keeping tabs? How does he look?

I think he’s a top ten rb in non ppr.

Howard is a tad underrated. The Bears were horrible last year and ran a crazy low number of plays on offense. And all of their WRs were hurt. A chunk of their oline was hurt often too. And John Fox.

 

Howard still managed to be serviceable/good on some weeks. Hes boring but hes a good, tough rb. If Trubisky can be less terrible and their offense can improve even a little, Howard should be top 10-ish again pretty easily. It probably wont be a Gurley-level resurgence, but theres still a chance for Howards situation to improve quite a bit on a week to week basis even if Human Joystick takes a leap this year.

the thing that scares me about howard is just hes not a good fit for a matt nagy offense...not the kind of lead back they really want....hes more of a fit for that john fox style/scheme stuff they were doing....but right now they dont really have the kind of guy id think theyd want on that roster...then again they didnt really go out and and address that so maybe they do like howard or are at least going to give him the chance to see if it can work

 

to me he sort of reminds me of gordon in LA....although prob less talented....not that i think they are really similar...i just think that howard could underimpress and still put up decent numbers if things fall right.....alot will depend on gameflow for howard....if the defense is playing well and they are moving the ball he will do well enough.....

 

i think cohen is the guy youd want in ppr(agree with others that have said it) because i think that cohen will be on the field even with howard......if the bears are in catch up mode than cohen could be real big....but i think that defense is pretty decent and should keep them in some games.....but they have some decent offenses in that division and could be playing a faster paced catchup type of games more often than not

If the passing game and o-line are improved I think Howard is improved. The overall offense can not get much worse than last year. I think Howard did pretty good with what he had to work with.

Howard is a great runner. His vision and instincts are top notch. He just isn't a high end athlete and can't catch well. While he isn't multi dimensional, and he may not fit the Nagy scheme perfectly, the combo of him and Cohen are perfect for the offense. The Bears should run a ton of 2 rb sets with both of them. The threat of pass or run will always be on the table. Besides having a Leveon Bell or David Johnson type guy, Howard is just fine for the team I root for. He will have scoring chances because of the overall improvement on offense. There isn't anyone else on the roster who should be taking goal line dives.

Value wise, he is going in the 6th round about, maybe the 5th. He had 53 catches last year in that horrid John Fox and Dowel Loggins offense. Instead of capitalizing on the first two weeks where Cohen was carving up defenses, they decided it was working too well and stopped going to him. Still, 53 catches is a lot for a little known rookie rb who isn't even the starter. He will add to that total, but he will also be used in more creative ways. It's not just the catches, I can see 6 TDs as his floor. His catch total gets closer to 70 imo, and he is still going to take some carries. He will be used in goal line packages as a receiver. It's really a belief in the overall improvement of offense by the team.

 

Oh and I just think he is really good with the ball in his hands

thats just it with howard....not a high end athlete...and i think thats a biased people use against him....

Not sure how they ranked last year but this year the are ranked anywhere from 12th best to 15th best.

It's always interesting how we all have our guys that give us the tingly feeling. Howard is actually a guy that does for me. As safe of a rb2 as there is, because he is a RB1 in non ppr. He is a very good running back who just doesn't have high end athleticism.

I'd grab Mixon or McKinnon over Howard at the back end of the 2nd. I think both of them have considerably more upside than Howard. Mixon started off slow last year, but came on strong down the stretch. He also reported to camp this year in much better shape than he did as a rookie. McKinnon is a little trickier, with the shoulder injury, but he has a bunch of stiffs running the ball behind him. I can't see a scenario where McKinnon will be splitting carries when the season starts. The 9ers are obviously a better team than the Bears as well...

I'm hoping Yahoo ranking stay how they are, as they currently have Howard going late 2nd early 3rd, which is ridiculous IMO. If that holds up I'll be looking at Gurley howard and a wr to start the draft.

 

Also, nothing wrong with a safe RB... I'll take 1,000/8+ any day.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said Jordan Howard will stay on the field for third down.

 

"Well do different things with [Howard] and well keep him on the field on third down Ive told you that before," Nagy emphasized. Nagy stated last month that he believes Howard "can play all three downs" and this statement reaffirms that belief wasn't just coach speak.

That's big time. Heavy workload in an (assumed to be) improving offense. I am not sure if everyone has looked at the RB's in the 2nd round...but there is nobody with his projected workload (including goal line work) in the same ADP area that he is in.

Ok. I wouldn't use the word "special", but the comparison is reasonable. I think he's too small to be better, but he'll help the team.
