Soccer could be more popular than baseball when World Cup comes to the U.S. in 2026

Recommended Posts

This speaks to your comment about HS and beyond.

Hitting a baseball is generally regarded as one of, if not THE hardest thing to do in sports.

I've played everything.

obviously not pro.

I could hit a HS pitch when I was in HS. I would have failed miserably in college.

Hitting a golf ball is not easy.

If you practice anything enough, you can do it. Obviously not the pro level

I couldn't hit worth a damn in little league. I didn't learn to hit until HS.

Interesting study:

Best out of 18

How many fairways could an avg guy hit from the pro tees?

How many base hits could an avg guy get against a major league pitcher?

Fairways should be easier, but most guys would sh!t their pants at some of these course set ups where the pros play.

Football killed soccer (and rugby) in the US. It's too bad because they are the 2nd and 3rd best games in the world.

Tell me how hard it is to get a hit in MLB.

80% of guys couldn't touch a ball at 70mph. Maybe 1% could touch a ball at 90, now add movement.

but a pitcher with 6 hits for his career with no extra basehits can double off the best pitcher in the majors?

doesn't compute

Jon Lester has 2 focking home runs.

ever seen him swing a bat?

.092 career average. 17 hits.

started his career 0 for 57

if he can get a hit, anyone that practices can get a hit.

you guys are so wrong

he can't throw to 1st base, but can jack a HR

Well, the best in the world can only get a hit in 1 out of every 4 at bats.

In golf, the best in the world hit 2.5 out of 4 fairways.

Not going to argue which is more difficult, but I think it would be entertaining to see a group of Geeks do the following:

1) Take 10 swings against an MLB pitcher

2) Take 10 attempts at trying to save a PK against a professional soccer player

I would pay to watch it.

if you just walk out there without practicing, sure, you'd suck at both.

i've said it numerous times. If you had the time to practice, you can do anything

Are the soccer players kicking the PK as hard as they would against a normal goalie? That's a big factor in my success rating.

A better test would be to shoot 10 PKS on a professional goalie. Not save them

I was going for the entertainment factor. A Geek kicking and missing the goal completely would be boring...Or it dribbling up to the goal.

There's a chance that a Geek takes a shot to the face/junk. Well worth the price of admission.

I disagree. I think the pro goalie save % on PKs is probably pretty close to the pro batter hit %.

You might be right.

I personally played goalie once, for about 20 minutes. Screaming at my coach to put someone in net that knows what the fock to do (15 years old probably)

You could have done it with more practice ed.

I never played soccer because I wasn't a poosay.

I like to watch it though because I'm a poosay now.

I didn't want to play soccer. My father forced me to.

I used to say I didn't want to play. My father would tell me to walk home from school if I didn't play

Okay look soccer is getting our 4th and 5th best athletes. What else do you need to know about how tough it is?

I put it in the same category as wrestlers. They weren't coordinated enough to play basketball and not big enough to play football but they were still athletic so they play soccer.

this is why we will never dominate at the world level, correct.

Now what this thread is about though

Soccer only needs to become the #1 sport in one major state for us to compete. And that will happen in Florida or California. Soccer is HUGE out here because the hispanic population. Florida has a population of 27 million I believe and thats more than a lot of European countries.

Croatia has 4.2 million people. Insanity

USA has 26 states with more than that

Now what this thread is about though

Id actually argue that's exactly what this thread is about. Because baseball is so much more popular it gets the better athletes.

I don't mind soccer and I don't even mind that we're not very good at it. Would actually be fun to watch us grow into being a sportspower in something. Feels like we pretty much clean house in everything else.

Problem is we will never have a league here that matches anything over in Europe. And until Europe gets an American star player we just are not going to care.

Stop. Just stop. I have been hearing the same old bullcrap song and dance for 20 years now. Soccer is NEVER going to replace ANY of the big 4. EVER. For a very simple reason. American male athletes play soccer in youth leagues. Once they start to get older and bigger they realize that soccer is for girls and for kids who have peanut allergies. You are left with the cream of the crop of pansies. Which are still pansies.

 winner

As immigrants continue to come here...and white couples keep having less kids, it's just inevitable.

Well to be fair, Atlanta United has what, ten home games a year? The braves have 81? Many of which are in the middle of a workday.

Our town has a population of around 1900 year round residents.

178 of them are kids who played in the youth baseball program this year.

Roughly 2/3 of these kids and their parents are really into the game. They all have favorite players and teams.

To say nobody under 35 cares about it is just silly.

Obvious hyperbole.

Kids still play baseball, they always will.

they don't go to stadiums and few sit and watch a PRO game

Its too expensive to go see live.

The games (especially playoffs and WS) are televised too late for many to stay up.

I hate that my kids hardly ever get to watch.
