Any of you collect things or have something that's worth a lot of money?

Recommended Posts

Any of you collect things? Such as rare bottles of liquor, baseball cards, stamps, etc? Or do you own something that's worth a good bit of money?

I have a couple cards that are worth some money as well as some sports memorabilia like autographed baseballs. Later on, when I decide to buy a house and settle down I plan on purchasing other rare sports memorabilia such as Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali boxing gloves, Ty Cobb autographed bat, Richard Petty hat, etc. to put in my sports room.

Youll fit right in.

If you're going to buy Tyson memorabilia, do it now and sell as soon as he dies.

X-Wing Miniatures. It's a game. But it's quite the collectible as well. My fleet is rather large.

You know what they say about guys with large fleet.

I have about 85-90,000 baseball cards. Problem is they're are mostly from the 1980's which was the absolute worst time period to collect them. They're worth less now than what I actually spent on them in 80's.

I also have about a thousand wheat pennies....they might be worth $25.

My parents used to run a card shop back in the day. We would also go to card shows. So I have a TON of baseball, football, and basketball cards. Plenty of autographed ones and a bunch extremely rare baseball cards. Like Ken Griffey jr rookie card, chipper jones, cal Ripken, Mickey Mantle, etc

my grandpa when I was a kid got me in to buying gold and silver

I have quite a bit of that

This is what I'd like to start doing. Do you buy coins or bars? Where do you normally purchase? I have researched a bit and looked online and am just curious.

A couple of years ago I bought some silver. A little at a time. I think I have about 52 oz. Just for fun. Might sell in 20 years or never. I buy mostly from silvertowne. I haven't bought any in over a year but I check the price several times a day.

I look at JMBoullion often, that looks similar to Silvertowne. Do you buy coins? Silver Eagles? I'm curious the easiest way to get as close to spot price as possible.

eta: Without buying 500 at a time.

I bought a few eagles and maple leafs on eBay before I figured out silvertowne was cheaper. Then I started buying their 1 oz bars and rounds. Buying 1-5 oz at a time, I paid 10-20% over spot. I know that's not a good deal, but I was just buying small amounts for fun. The eagles and leafs sell for more, but if you want closer to spot, you don't want those. It's funny how often I check the price. Since I have no intention of selling anytime soon, I'm actually always hoping the price will fall in case I want to buy more. I'm guessing pawn shops are the way to go since there are no shipping costs involved, but I never did that. When I buy from silvertowne, there is no shipping or tax, so that is included in the 10-20%.

Those aren't worth much though. I think you'd have to actually pay people to take them off your hands

Yeah, they're for amusement purposes only. I use them to waste time.

man I loved the card trade in the late 80s early 90s. Till the card companies got greedy and killed the market

Yep, feel like it peaked with Griffey Jr upperdeck rookie card in '89. I remember trading for one from this kinda stupid kid in grade school.

I have a couple of shotguns my grandfather liberated from germany during WWII. Ornate, double barrelled shotguns. One with a polished wooden trigger guard. I've never seen anything like it. I'd love to know what it's worth. (He also brought back some nazi coins. Swatstickers and all.) I miss that guy. He was always full of beans.

Other than that, I've got some sports memorabilia that's probably worth more to me than anybody else and some soon to be classic cars.

I got an autograph from Sweetness and some old coins.

I also have the proof to my Grandmother's Ellis Island Medal of Honor. She recieved it in 1986, the first year they were given out. That is my most prized possession.

No. Things have no appeal to me anymore. I'm sorta disgusted by people's collections of things actually. I can appreciate a museum or two, but that's where it stops.

I like to spend my money on having fun, taking trips, going on adventures and and helping other people. In that order.

Can you help me have fun by going on an adventurous trip?

Sure. But it's gonna cost you your Steve Sharts, Rusty Kuntz and Mitch Kupchak rookie cards.

I thought about actually doing that. Like getting a nice album folder and several clear pages that have holders for bills. Fire is the worry though and why I decided not to do it. Even looked into fire proof safes, but those are not foolproof either depending on how hot and how long a fire rages.
