The "Manufacture a win" trade technique. Shady or smart?

Recommended Posts

I believe back in the day, GFIAFP wrote about this. He was in a situation where he drafted Aaron Rodgers. This was the one great year Michael Vick had and he got him off waivers. He couldn't start both players, obv, so it makes sense to trade, he decided coinflip in the scoring system, more value for Rodgers in a trade but he didn't want Rodgers playing against him so the team he was going to play week 10 was a losing team, needed a QB. Giants Fan, in legendary fashion, RIP Giants Fan, trades Aaron Rodgers to the team he plays week 10, Green Bay bye week. So, in a sense he unleashed Aaron Rodgers on the rest of the league. The losing team (in the trade) though, almost came back and would have beat him in the championship but he ended up in third place, mostly due to that trade which gave his team life getting Rodgers.

So, let me give you a current example. If your team is stacked enough at WR that you aren't even considering John Brown and you want to upgrade Lamar Miller, both those guys have the same bye week (week 10, I think, maybe 11) so if I look at my week 10 opponent, he has David Johnson. Yesssss. Perfect. Cardinals play Chicago this week. Another bad game and I'll offer him Lamar Miller and John Brown for David Johnson.

Week 10 rolls around, yep ... you fell for the old MAW trade. Not only are you in bye trouble, you don't have David Johnson anymore to play against me.

Could we get some frozen pizza reviews?

It's too bad the great and legendary Giants Fan isn't around anymore. The prose he wrote, regarding frozen TV dinners, well it's a shame it didn't win a Pulitzer. Legendary.

We all sign a contract in blood though to play the game with honor and good sportsmanship though ... oh we don't do that? Your league doesn't do that? Mine either. Some do. I've heard.

Is it trying to take advantage of someone who maybe isn't paying enough attention. It is game theory correct, but is it shady?

If the owner of D Jonson takes that deal, then they aren’t paying attention.

If they take that deal they should be kicked out of that league.

Called strategy. I started 0-5 a few years ago. Being in keeper league/Ohio State fan, I really liked Zeke and wanted him. The only way I could have employed his services was to use OBJ as trade bait. I ended up offering alot more to seal the deal with the top dog in our league. Trade happened and he had to exchange player for player. Ajayi was one player I received. At the time he wasn't doing crap and was in coaches doghouse. With zero expectations to win, I found myself 1-5...5-5...8-5! With the help of my already drafted Jordan Howard and Zeke, and Ajayi...my 0-5 team made it to the playoffs! Guess who I met at the championships? Yup...the former Zeke owner. I won the championship that year based on the premise of this thread. I knew Zeke was special and needed to rebuild my ff team since losing Beast mode for many years. Never expected to win but I'm also living proof that any 0-5 team can come back and bite you in the ass!

Things like this are dumb. You gain nothing and achieve nothing. Just start your best players and hope you outscore your opponent.

If you're not paying attention to bye weeks and strength of schedule... Wait are you butt hurt because this happened to you?

I don't believe in kicking people out of leagues, but I do support a swift kick in the nuts for teams like this. Even a graze can send the right message.
