New England Patriots 19 - 0 this season? USA Today says yes

Recommended Posts

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/07/24/patriots-16-0-usa-today/

After an unusually aggressive offseason that saw the Super Bowl champion Patriots make big-name signings and trade away their top draft picks for established players, expectations are as lofty as ever.
On Monday, USA Today took those high expectations to another level. The outlet officially predicted that the Patriots will go 16-0 in the regular season, then defeat the Chargers, Raiders, and Packers in the NFL Playoffs to complete the first-ever 19-0 season.
This comes a week after Julian Edelman called the 19-0 talk “stupid” when asked about it at a youth football camp. If the Patriots are to pull off the perfect season, it will of course rest mostly on the shoulders of soon-to-be-40-year-old quarterback Tom Brady.
Brady does look more than ready for the challenge, however, as he took to Instagram Monday morning to express his excitement to report to training camp – which officially starts on Thursday.
A few weeks ago, Brady invited Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola to Montana to practice on his man-made football field on his property in the mountain west. But they aren’t the only Patriots putting in work as the season nears, as Rob Gronkowski posted a video of himself and former Patriot Stevan Ridley to his own Instagram.

Meh. Ho hum.

I don't care what they finish the season as, just as long as they finish as Super Bowl Champions...

New England is always good and they had their best offseason in years. Definitely a possibility.

You have to think this is the best roster they have put out in their dynasty run

I am not a fan of the Patriots, but I want them to win so that they will have six Super Bowl titles and will hopefully shut up the Steeler fans...

Can we all agree TB12 HAS to decline at some point?

No one seems to think this will ever happen

Brady doesn't take many hits. And doesn't put a lot of strain on his arm. He can still throw it deep, but throws a large majority of his passes short. He releases the ball very quickly, usually before any defenders can get near him. Since he's older and has never been very solidly built, he is always one hit away. Maybe moreso than any other QB in the league. (other than Bradford). But dumping off short passes in two seconds is the ticket to longevity. I can see three more seaosns.

I could see it.. But I'd bet BB would just assume go 12-4, home field thru out healthy.

no. focking. way.

BB (IMO) is well aware of the history of the game, his place in history, etc. Sure, publicly he (they) will say they don't care about it... but to be so close once and miss it? It's the Holy Grail and he's the only one who's even sniffed it in the modern era.

I don't understand the thinking that NE (BB, Brady "they") wouldn't want it or don't care about it... "The SB" is all that matters, yada, yada, yada... maybe it's what you say publicly... but we're talking immortality here... and if you have even a CHANCE to taste it and you don't try or want to??? Then you don't deserve sh!at.

:dunno: maybe I'm wrong... .but that's how I feel about that.

:D

Yeah, I think so too.

Don't get me wrong. BB wants Super Bowl above all else. If the chance to go undefeated arises, he will take it

Pats going 19-0 is probably better odds than the Jets winning 4 games.

I agree. Although the odds of either are small, as I sit here and think on it, if I had to bet one one or the other happening I'd take the Pats.

Big deal, I've been calling 19-0 since February

Well since you call it every year, it doesn't carry a lot of weight.

Is 19-0 really that big a thing, really? The Phins went 17-0, does anybody talk about it, or even give a shiit? I'm not even sure Miami fans wear that badge too boldly. :dunno:

Give me a full strength healthy team rolling into the post season over chasing 19-0.

Don Shula and a few of his players are obsessed with it.

Considering Miami is the only team to ever go undefeated and win the Super Bowl, I'd say it's a pretty big deal.

That's about it really... But again, that goal still pales in comparison to another SB, least to me... I'd want to put the # of SB titles so far out of reach, the likes of Pitt, SF and Dallas might not get there for quite some time.

Yea, but who talks about it other than Miami coaches, players and devoted fans? That '72 team is almost never mentioned in the top 5 of greatest teams of all time. Which is kind of crazy really.

remember 2 seasons ago, they started out 10 and 0, lost to the Broncos in over time and then the season spiraled a bit and they lost their last 2 games to 2 complete inept teams.

it definitely matters to them

It only gets talked about when a team looks like it might have a chance to equal it. Just like when a guy has a 30 game hitting streak. All of a sudden, people talk about DiMaggio's 56 game streak.

Because they played only 2 teams in the regular season that ended up with a winning record, and the combined winning percentage of their regular season opponents was .367.

Yea... but before the season even starts - given the choice, I'd take the healthy team with home field thru out over an injury riddled one chasing 19-0.

19-0 isn't talked about because it's such a mythical, unattainable accomplishment - it's not worth setting as a "goal" because it's so unreasonable.

Like Newbie said, the 56 game hitting streak, or 400 Ks, or 100 points in an NBA game... it's been done (or sorta' been done) so you can think about it or consider it... but to actually achieve it is other worldy... and therefore sports "immortality".

Take Shula for example... sure, great coach with lots of success... but was he any better than Tom Landry? Because of Shula's undefeated season, we all still hear about him... 40 - 50 years later... kids today may know who he his... the undefeated crown-jewel gave him immortality.

So while agree that you can't set it as a "goal"... it is meaningful... VERY Meaningful... it makes you the guy that went to the Moon when nobody thought it was possible.

This is what I was thinking, might as well solidify the greatest NFL franchise ever.

Wouldn't surprise me. What surprises me is that they have the chargers in the playoffs

Yeah I'm trying to understand the love here...they won 5 games last year. For a last place schedule they don't have any easy one...

Eagles Giants Cowboys Redskins Patriots Dolphins Then obviously 6 pretty tough division games.

Yet their O/U is 7.5 and the over is the juiced side at -125.

I'm not sure how or if it could happen, but with all this hype, I see the wheels falling off this year for the Patriots. :dunno:

I'd think there is a better chance of Colin Krapernick leading a team to the playoffs

Ehhh, I think the Dolphins could take a small step forward this year. But the Bills and Jets are basically 4 wins automatically.

Mike Gillislee is going to be real good for them is my prediction. I think they have a hell of a team this year. I don't see a team that is in their class from the AFC. I see the Titans as the team to take over the AFC when the Pats eventually do hit the wall.

more than ever the Pats have depth this year... it's a war of attrition and NE seems better prepared than ever to handle injuries with their typical "next man up" approach... only this year that "next man up" is an even better talent than ever.

Too many injuries can derail any team.

They've usually been able to overcome a few, so I don't know what that magic number is for this team.
