Instant Fantasy Analysis - QB C.J. Beathard, 49ers

Recommended Posts

New HC Kyle Shanahan has a nice track record for developing quarterbacks, but the selection of Beathard feels much more like a selection of a signal-caller who he hopes will emerge as a long-term backup. Beathard did play in a pre-style offense at Iowa, but he is very much an average prospect with very little upside.

I don't think a new coach with as many holes as the 49ers trade up for a signal caller "he hopes will emerge as a long term backup ".

I saw enough games of Beathard's to know he possesses very little upside. Shanahan's approval of him is the only thing that made me believe he was even worth a write-up.

I've seen all of Beathard's games and I'm not sold on him either. It is hard to gauge what he can become. To say he has little upside provides 0% analysis. He looked great his junior year leading Iowa to the B10 championship game while gutting the season out with a sports hernia. He is tough, has arm talent and was a leader. CJ didn't look like the same guy this year. Didn't have the same fire. He was also playing with unarguably the worst WR corps in major D1 football. Maybe the staff felt he would feel right at home in SF.

I just think it doesn't make sense to say that the 49ers would trade up in the 3rd round to find their long term back up.

I obviously think it makes more sense than you do. Even though some teams find their eventual starter in the third, most figure third-round QBs will be long-term backups. Teams trade up when they see the last player on a tier is available at a position they want in most cases. If Beathard was projected to be anything more than a backup, he would have went much earlier than he did in what was a weak QB draft.

He was drafted a round higher than Kirk Cousins.

We'll see in a year. To me the 9ers made some intriguing picks in gambling on Foster and especially Joe Williams.

Witherspoon' deficiency in the run game suggests nickel back.

The 9ers have a ton of cap room in 2018 and will have a high pick. So instead of drafting a qb they might a) go after Cousins, or B) see how CJ develops

I suspect this is the whole reason Cousins didnt sign in Washington. I think there is a good chance that this is where he's going unless Washington Franchises him one more time.

No no he's right, this makes no sense. Unless of course there's an established veteran in place which is/was not the case with the 49ers. Trade up to draft your long term back up QB? Back up to who? Darnold? Lol
