Sagging pants ordinance

Pants on the ground? You could spend six months in jail.

Ocala, a town in central Florida, approved an ordinance this week that tightens the belt for anyone on city-owned property such as sidewalks, parks and pools. Violators could be forced to pay $500 or face jailtime of six months.

We have the right to say you have to be clothed in public, fashion statement or not, City Attorney Patrick Gilligan told the Ocala Star Banner.

Enforcing the law would be similar to how officers enforce noise complaints, Gilligan said. If the behavior persists after multiple warnings, that person can face arrest.

Critics of the law including some local chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union have pointed to the potential for racial profiling. But Ocala Council member Mary Rich, who wrote the ordinance, said targeting specific groups wasnt her intention.

It doesnt matter what color they are, Rich said. They all wear their pants down.

Cities across the country including New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami and Jacksonville, Fla. have taken steps to crack down on the baggy pants problem.

What say you all? Good idea or no?

I hate the baggy panes look but I don't think you should face fines or arrests for dressing like a tool.

Don't be fooled either. Plenty of white kids wear their pants like retards too. This isn't just a color thing.

Neck tats and baggie pants = probably have been or will soon be in prison

I don't see much difference between this and fining for leaving your trashcans out too long. It's in everyone's best interest not to have your town look like a ghetto.

Can't see how this would ever hold up to appeal in a higher court. Stupid lawmakers trying to legislate where they have no business doing so.

What are panes ?

Non-stupid people were able to ascertain that the E probably should been a T, since the statement would make no sense otherwise.

HTH

I think the argument for things like a trash is that it's a public health issue and/or hurts your neighbors' property values? I'm not a fake lawyer but I think it would be hard to make the same argument against baggy pants.

I hate the look and think people who dress like that are tools. I just think that issuing fines because someone is dressed in a ghetto way is a major overreach and a huge slippery slope. Where does that logic end?

Generally at the Supreme Court, but I am sure there is precedent for indecency laws passed by local jurisdictions.

I don't know about the legality of it all but I oppose ordinances to tell people how to dress unless they are truly indecent / unclothed. If you can walk down the street in a bathing suit or shirtless I don't see how this is any different.

It shouldn't be a crime to render yourself unemployable... As long as there are no indecency issues.... You could wear boxers as shorts as long as you aren't flashing anyone...

I generally root for the top American in any golf tourney but Fowler's hat made it really tough.

If I could vote to outlaw saggy pants in my community, I'd definitely vote yes. Of course, I'd also support outlawing visible tattoos and people who stink. And I'm not even kidding. I hate scum.

My favorite part is that the ACLU weighed in. Really? There are no other real problems to address?

A few weeks ago I was sitting at a red light and saw two fat cops chasing a skinny black guy trying to hold his pants up as they were falling down. It was like a cartoon. The black guy would get a lead but his pants would start falling down so he'd have to slow down to pull them up. Then the cops would get closer to catching up with him but they were fat and out of breath so they had to slow down. Hot pursuit at it's best.

Agreed. I could maybe see dress restrictions if they are gang related. But being a loser doosh isn't a crime.
