Player 1 does a 100% clean play that happens to injure player 2. Both players handle it like professionals. Player 2's team gets trolled by media and tries to put Player 1 in the hospital.

Machado's play was not clean. He slid past the bag with spikes up. I don't think it was intentional, though.

Barnes should have drilled him in the ass and it would have been over. Instead, he went at his head and he got suspended for 4 games.

I am a more then casual Red Sox fan. Just slightly below the Mets in fandom.

To me the bigger issue is Dustin as a leader throwing his team under the bus. Saying it's not me it's them is the biggest pvssy move out there. Yes he didn't say it publicly and it is unfortunate that the cameras caught him saying that but it is a cop out for a team leader

if you watch the slide, machado went out of his way to apologize and see if pedroia was ok. I think Pedroia appreciated that and believed it wasn't intentional. Then when he saw the pitch aimed at his head, I'm sure he wanted to make it clear that he thought it was bullsh1t. Fock it, I don't blame him for throwing the team under the bus. That pitch was pussie . They should be thrown under the bus and I don't blame Pedroia one bit for wanting to distance himself from it

If there is an argument for pitchers batting, this incident is it. Sox pitcher should eventually have to take one in the ribs, but it wont ever happen.

I am not saying it was intentional, but it was NOT clean

Also, suspensions for pitchers should be 4 times longer than suspensions for everyday players. What is a four game suspension for a pitcher?

It isn't... Yes the spikes were up, but he did slide before the bag, not waiting until he was on top of it... There obviously no intent on Machado, just unfortunately had his spikes up...

You do know that HS kids where metal cleats. It does make a difference.

I agree that it was a bad slide. Dangerous play to come in with the spikes high and guys know better.

Who gives a chit who wears them? no one should.

Name another sport that has contact that allows metal cleats?

Moronic

Football has metal cleats for games on grass.

Hockey players wear sharpened blades on their feet.

I agree and disagree at the same time. Don't think it was intentional and I think Dustin knew that. However unwritten rule he is going to be thrown at. If Pedroia felt strongly about it he should of addressed his tl teammates and told them not to retaliate.

When the inevitable happened he should not of -as Inalready said - thrown his team under the bus.

For you and Edjr as you ignore that there are times when football players swap out for longer, metal cleat depending on the grass and weather. I will ignore the fact that Ed's argument makes no sense given that kids as young as HS have been using (and continue to use) metal spikes in baseball (and other sports) as they do make a difference over plastic spikes.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/271821-metal-vs-plastic-cleats/

Heavy Metal

Cleats with metal spikes have been used in sports like baseball, football, golf, soccer and rugby for decades. Depending on the sport, the metal spikes are in different shapes, come in different lengths and are arranged in different patterns. The spikes themselves are made from steel for strength and durability. For mid- and high-range models, the metal spikes are replaceable, so that if one breaks off, bends or wears out before the shoe, you don’t have to replace the entire pair of cleats.

As young as high school. Don't forget the college kids. Metal cleats are in heavy use in baseball and other sports when you get into competitive situations as it does make a difference, particularly in baseball.
