Grade your teams draft - 2012

2012 NFL Draft

How long does the average draft pick stick around(Charted by round)?

2011 thread

Last year in this thread there was a lot of discussion regarding grading, particularly the lower round players, since they are most likely to fail, should they get an "F" for failing or a "C" since that's about average. Found this chart/article that details the chance a player sticks with a team by round. Use it as you will and just like last year, you are the professor, grade how you want.

Kalil: D+

Looked great his rookie year, and has seriously regressed. Hopefully he can turn it around, but I'm not holding my breath.

Harrison Smith: A+

Stud in the making.

Josh Robinson: B-

Decent contributor, started making some plays last year.

Jarius Wright: B

Again, decent contributor, made some plays last year.

Rhett Ellison: A+

Not someone who gets a lot of attention, but a very valuable role player, acquired later.

Greg Childs: F

Blew out both his knees in training camp, never got on the field.

Robert Blanton: B

Another decent contributor, grade gets bumped for the lateness of the pick.

Blair Walsh: A

Looked studly his first year, has regressed some (I'm guessing kicking outdoors now hasn't helped), but a very good late pick.

Audie Cole: C

Hasn't played much, but has done surprisingly well when given a shot.

Trevor Guyton: F

Didn't make the team, out of the NFL.

Overall: B. A stud, and some role players. If Kalil is able to get his head out of his ass, turns into an A.

Green Bay Packers

1.28 LB Nick Perry(Southern California) - Was expected transition to OLB opposite Mathews and provide enough pass to free up Clay. Has never developed and real pass rush skills and is a liability when asked to cover. One positive is he has become a plus defender against the run.

Grade C-

2.19 DL Jerel Worthy(Michigan State) - Green Bay actually traded up for Worthy and due to injuries he managed to start 4 games late his rookie year. Didn't show much, then suffered ACL injury in the last game. Since then he's only been on the field for a handful of plays, spent last year on KC practice squad but signed to come to camp this year. There were a lot of questions about his heart and whether his game would translate to the Pro's and they all came back negative.

Grade F

2.31 DB Casey Hayward(Vanderbilt) - Casey had a great rookie campaign, playing both outside and in the slot. From the slot, he showed great ball instincts and picked off 6 passes. As a rookie made the Pro Football Focus All Pro team. Missed entire 2nd season injured. Picked off 3 more passes last year in limited duty. With Tramon Williams and House gone, Casey has been penciled in as the starting DB across from Shields.

Grade B

4.37 DL Mike Daniels(Iowa) - Easily TT's best pick in 2012 draft. He should be too short and too light to play on a 3-4 defensive line, but apparently nobody told him that. Has a wrestling background and it shows as he uses incredible body leverage to get after QB's, get off guards, collapse the pocket and cause general mayhem. Type of player, that every team loves to have, expect the Packers to try and lock him up before training camp, he's earned a new deal.

Grade A+

4.38 DB Jerron McMillian(Maine) - Basically a good pro day and that he was a capable tackler--couple with a huge need at safety(Nick Collins injury) and the Packers REACHED for a 7th round pick at the end of the 4th. Was essentially given the starting role in 2nd year and lost it almost immediately to undrafted MD Jennings. Final straw was when he stopped paying attention to defensive signals and found himself out of position numerous times. Currently out of football

Grade F

5.28 LB Terrell Manning(North Carolina State) Played a little ST's, released at the end of 2nd training camp. Somebody must like him as he's been on 6 rosters since being cut, last being the Giants last season.

Grade D-

7.34 OL Andrew Datko(Florida State) - This pick was a Hail Mary from the start as he'd once been thought of as a early day 2 pick, but injured then re-injured his shoulder his senior year. Made it to the practice squad, cut next season.

Grade D

7.36 QB B.J. Coleman(Tennessee-Chattanooga) - Big arm, right size, looked terrible in preseason game, couldn't grasp Packer offense. Playing in the Arena League now.

Grade D

Overall D+

1 big hit(Daniels) another potential starter(Hayward) and a 2 down player in Perry. Even with Daniels, only 3 players on the roster after 3 years, that's horrible. TT chased and chased defensive players at the cost of the Best Player Available and only 3 of his picks made it though the 2nd season. Hands down the worst net he's had since being there. For a team that is allergic to free agency, this one hurt big time.

Good thread Honcho... interesting to read all the grades from last year (2011).

Kansas City Chiefs - 2012 Draft

1.11 DL Dontari Poe

2.12 OL Jeff Allen
3.11 OL Donald Stephenson
4.12 WR Devon Wylie
5.11 DB DeQuan Menzie
6.12 RB Cyrus Gray
7.11 DL Jerome Long
7.31 WR Junior Hemingway

Ouch. Poe, Allen and Stephenson have all at least played for the team over the last few years but draft results like this are a good way to stunt the growth of your franchise. Poe is a solid interior lineman and the OL's are serviceable, when healthy, but this draft has "D" written all over it.

Thanks. I figure when you consider all the time I waste on your site, I should at least make a contribution once a year. Which is exactly one more than Jerel Worthy's ever made.

DAL: hit and miss. C-

1 (trade up): claiborne, CB. very highly regarded prospect that has not panned out on the field. hard to assess whether this is due to his constant injuries or a football problem, but at this point, it doesn't matter. it's arguable that he would not have been worth the investment unless he developed into a elite guy.

3: crawford, DE (now DT). very solid pick--the guy is heading for stardom at the 3-tech if he keeps his head on straight.

4a: wilbur, OLB. solid role player that has quietly contributed at a number of positions.

4b: johnson, FS. IMO an excellent draft decision, but like claiborne, his body never allowed him to develop. sometimes you lose a gamble. sometimes you lose two.

5: coale, WR. another body problem--constantly injured. think of him as a first attempt at cole beasley. never developed.

6. hanna, TE. outstanding value for this pick. drafted for his downfield ability, but rebuilt himself into an excellent blocker.

7. mcsurdy, LB. a trend here--the right kind of guy, but not enough talent.

overall grade, C-. had claiborne panned out, i think it would have been a B+ due to some good late finds. but this draft just seems snakebit.

Seattle Seahawks 2012 Draft, Grade A+++

1.15 Bruce Irvin, DE, West Virginia (C+)

2.15 Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah St (A++)

3.12 Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin (A+++)

4.11 Robert Turbin, RB, Utah St (B )

4.19 Jaye Howard, DT, Florida (C )

5.19 Korey Toomer, LB, Idaho (C+)

6.2 Jeremy Lane, CB, Northwestern St (LA) (A++)

6.11 Winston Guy, S, Kentucky (D )

7.18 JR Sweezy, DE, North Carolina St (A++)

7.25 Greg Scruggs, DE, Louisville (C+)

Ten picks, 9 guys still around. Drafted a franchise QB, All Pro MLB, starting RG, starting OLB, nickel back, and 4 backups. The only player not around is playing for the Chiefs. Not a whiff in sight. One of, if not THE, best drafts in Seahawks history.

Bruce Irvin was drafted way too early for the role of edge rusher opposite of Chris Clemmons. Irvin was terrible against the run and his speed was negated at intial contact on the line of scrimmage. However, he was shifted in his 2nd season to LB, and is current the third best LB starter on the team. Unremarkable play and doesn’t make noticeable impact necessarily, but seems to get the job done and credit is given for the position switch and adapting. His best asset is speed. Still, you don’t spend a mid 1st round pick on an unproven OLB.

Bobby Wagner was in a tier with a few other LBs at this spot in the draft, and the Seahawks pulled out the plum. Last year, the run defense was night and day whenever Wagner was in or out of the lineup. Should be in the conversation for the best MLB in football.

Russell Wilson. What more can be said here? A franchise turning draft selection, two Super Bowl appearances, one win, and just entering his fourth season. Intelligent decision making and motivated to get better. Just needs more WRs to throw to. And I thought he got taken a bit early. Dumb.

Robert Turbin has been the backup to Beast Mode since being drafted. Has improved his pass catching and shiftiness in carrying the ball. A very solid backup.

Jaye Howard didn’t do much with Seattle, but has caught on with Kansas City.

Korey Toomer never makes the regular season squad because he always gets hurt in camp or preseason. He’s fast. So he gets invited every year, and breaks down every year. If he ever stays healthy, he would be on the roster.

Jeremy Lane is the nickel back on the team and a stand out special teams player. His injury in the Super Bowl probably cost Seattle the win as his replacement got torched repeatedly. Key secondary player.

Winston Guy spent some time in Jacksonville in between stints in Seattle, but is a rotational secondary player with special teams attributes. Edit: I apparently have Winston Guy confused with Will Blackmon. I suck.

JR Sweezy is the starting RG and arguably the best offensive lineman on the team (Okung is hurt a lot). He was drafted out of position and has improved every season.

Greg Scruggs seems to be injured a lot but seems to be on the roster quite a bit too. A deep reserve

Considering the price we paid for Claiborne to move up, plus the lack of actual contribution we got out of the 7 drafted as a whole - I'm right there with you.... The 2 picks we gave away to get Claiborne turned into Michael Brockers and Alshon Jeffrey - both would be starting for us today if here.

I'd go one further, my grade: D

1.23 OL Riley Reiff - This is a solid pick. There was speculation his arms were too short to be LT but he's protects Stafford's blind side adequately. No complaints. There's certainly worse around the league.
2.22 WR Ryan Broyles - injury busto, was already rehabbing when drafted and has never recovered terrible pick
3.22 DB Dwight Bentley mediocre for two years then injured for all of the third which was not a big deal as (even though he was the #3 CB and slot guy) he was hardly missed. At least he's still on the roster but is no more than a warm body who doesn't contribute much when healthy with replacement level talent. When he's on the field, plays like a seventh rounder not a third.
4.30 DL Ronnell Lewis Oklahoma from SF - plays like crap, has bad attitiude, likes his beverages too much, out of the league for a couple years now terrible player, terrible person, terrible pick. by far the worst of this draft class.
5.03 LB Tahir Whitehead - now I like this one a lot was a late round find. a real keeper. Played well when given the chance after Tulloch hurt himself. Can rotate in at any LB spot. I feel comfortable when he's on the field giving the starters a breather or being the starter when injuries happen. Solid.
5.13 DB Chris Greenwood meidocre, never played, got cut still bouncing around practice squads somewhere
6.26 DB Jonte Green at least he stayed healthy and made the team although never really contributed. Three DBs taken in this draft none of the poo thrown stuck to either the receivers or the wall and only stuck on the roster because nothing better came along either.
7.16 LB Travis Lewis - nothing special about this special teamer. another warm body who's usually a healthy scratch. Still around I think. Out of sight, out of mind.

LT is a one of the most critical positions in the game and the Lions locked it down with Reiff in this draft. They also got a solid and versatile LB in the later rounds in Whitehead. Some more players are still on the roster but not real contributors or difference makers,

Prolly a C-/D+.based on the picks but hold on there's more. Bump it up to a C or C+ . The Lions get extra credit because they also uncovered UDFA find of the year LaAdrian Waddle at RT. I would be seriously surprised if any other teams landed a better UDFA this year than the Lions did with Waddle. A real keeper and a third really good player.

Good Lord, forgot how bad that draft was for SF. The only person still on the roster is Joe Looney, a backup OL who looked shaky last season. No need to go into great depth here: F.

Overall D+

1 big hit(Daniels) another potential starter(Hayward) and a 2 down player in Perry. Even with Daniels, only 3 players on the roster after 3 years, that's horrible. For a team that is allergic to free agency, this one hurt big time.

I think Hayward and Daniels lift this above a D+.

Perry has not busted quite yet...3 years later you have 2 guys as starters and quality starters...another as a solid depth guy on the outside (even if not the pass rush guy you thought he would be).

Not a great draft...but for Daniels and Hayward alone Id push it to a C.

New England Patriots

2012

1.21 DL Chandler Jones Syracuse - Grade A-. Kid has talent and has been a good pass rusher that they have needed

1.25 LB Dont'a Hightower Alabama - Grade B+. After starting out slow, has really put it together and was a key reason they won the SB after Mayo went down

2.16 DB Tavon Wilson Illinois - Grade C-. This is generous given that he was a 2nd round guy that they reached for and he has done squat. At least he is still on the team (see other busts)

3.27 DL Jake Bequette Arkansas - Grade D. Had some promise, but he is a 3rd rounder sitting on their practice squad.

6.27 DB Nate Ebner Ohio State - Grade B. Late round special teams contributor.

7.17 DB Alfonzo Dennard Nebraska - Grade B-. Has first round skills with 50 cent head. Re-signed him for too much. Looks good in prison scrubs.

7.28 WR Jeremy Ebert Northwestern - Grade D. Not an F because it was a 7th rounder, but he is out of football

Let's start off with the unseen. The Patriots traded for Chad Johnson (Ochostinko) and Albert Haynesworth using picks that were part of this class. On that alone, they are sitting in poor shape.

Overall, they did good at the top of the draft, which is what matters. The rest of the moves were hit or miss. Give them a solid B.

I called those two first round selections, first time i every guessed what Belicheck would do, and managed to guess right consecutively as they were they guys I'd have gone after. Both have been very good.

Pretty spot on. The only reason it's not lower is that I don't think there is truly an F- grade.

I remember an interview with Harbaugh BEFORE the draft saying how excited he was about the player that they intended to take. AJ Jenkins....................

TITANS

1.20 - WR Kendall Wright (Baylor)

Wright was a bit of shocker pick when we took him in the 1st Round. He was graded to go there, but most fans thought we had bigger needs than WR at that pick. Overall, he had a solid rookie campaign, and he looked really good in his second year, racking up some nice yardage numbers (even if the TDs continue to evade him). Last year, he was inconsistent, but he also dealt with a ludicrous turnstile of QBs because of injuries. He's very quick but kinda, oddly clumsy -- as I've never seen anyone slip and fall as much as this guy after making a catch. Probably not a true #1 WR in this league but more than capable of being a solid contributor as a #2 WR. GRADE: "B"

2.20 - OLB/ILB Zach Brown (North Carolina)

Brown is one of the hardest picks to grade. He looked fantastic in his rookie year, where he was flying all over the place, causing turnovers, putting pressure on the QB, making some nice tackles, etc. In his second year, however, he really regressed -- to the point that he got benched toward the end of the season and was outspoken in his critiques of the coaching staff. Last year, he got moved to ILB in Norton's 3-4 DEF and looked like he might be pretty good in that spot until his early season injury. If he can come back healthy and motivated, he's got the speed/talent to be a difference maker in the LB core. GRADE: "C+"

3.19 - DL Mike Martin (Michigan)

Martin is also difficult to grade. He's one of the strongest players on the team and one of the strongest players in the NFL, if I'm remembering right. But that's not really translated into any big splash plays. In fact, he seems to have difficulty getting onto the field for whatever reason. I don't blame him too much because this team is notorious for under-playing good DL (see: Karl Klug). However, at some point, you have to wonder why his pure athletic talent and strength haven't resulted in more playing time -- especially since we were so bad against the run last year. Potential, but this is a make-or-break year for him. GRADE: "C-"

4.20 - CB Coty Sensabaugh (Clemson)

Sensabaugh was also banged up last season. However, he played well in the two preceding seasons as our nickel CB. He's not great at anything, but he's solid at everything. Not big or fast enough to line-up on the outside as a #1/#2 CB, but he can hold his on in the slot -- especially if the DL and OLBs are getting pressure. Nothing special but a contributor, and in the NFL today, you can't have too many decent/good CBs. GRADE: "C+"

5.10 - TE Taylor Thompson (Southern Methodist)

It was at this point in the draft that the 2012 draft-strategy became obvious: Draft Freaks. Zach Brown is freakishly fast for an OLB; Mike Martin is freakishly strong; and Taylor Thompson has the measurables to be a really, really difficult matchup for opposing DEFs. This was a wait-and-see type pick because he hadn't played TE since high school. (He played DE in college.) But he's got decent hands and has developed into a truly dominating blocker. I'd like to see him continue to develop his route-running and play with more consistency in the passing-game. Last offseason, he was doing really well apparently and fans were expecting him to make a jump. But then he got hurt and dealt with nagging injuries all season long, which limited his progression. This is another guy who is facing a make-or-break year this season. GRADE: "C-"

6.20 - FS/SS Markelle Martin (Oklahoma State)

Martin was a guy who was very highly regarded but then got hurt and saw his draft-stock plummet as a result. If I'm remembering correctly, at one point in the process, he was predicted to be a 2nd-3rd Round guy. So, at the time, this seemed like a very good value pick for the Titans. But he spent his first season on the IR, I think. And he never distinguished himself when he returned. No longer on the team. GRADE: "F"

7.04 - DE Scott Solomon (Rice)

Kind of a DE/OLB tweener. At the time that we drafted him, we were a full-blown 4-3 team so it was sort of an odd pick. We did need additional help with the pass-rush; but most thought that we'd address it much earlier than this in the draft. Solomon spent a year on-and-off the PS, I believe, and was eventually cut. Never really made any impact here. GRADE: "F"

Overall, this was a very average draft for the Titans. No players that jump off the page in terms of contribution -- though the combo of Wright, Brown, and Sensabaugh have been productive when healthy. And Martin and Thompson both have potential -- though they're both likely on the hot seat this season, assuming that they even make the team. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Wright and Brown. Again, I think Wright's talented and could be a 900-1100 yard guy, if we have stability at the QB spot -- which we haven't had in several seasons. Brown has to return from injury and show that he still has the acceleration, coverage-ability, and playmaking skills that he demonstrated in his rookie season. Right now, this draft was not as good as our 2011 draft but better than our 2013 draft.

Chicago Bears

1.19DL Shea McClellin Boise State

McClellin has never lived up to the hype (only 1 person was really hyped, and he is now fired). He had one 3 sack game and was responsible for knocking Aaron Rodgers out with a broken collae bone a few years ago. That is his only notable achievement. The Bears have tried converting him to an OLB, but his average athleticism and lack of instincts has proven he cannot play anywhere on the defense.

Grade: D-

2.13WR Alshon Jeffery South Carolina

We all know what Alshon has done for our fantasy teams. He did take a step back last year, but that was more because of the joke of a coaching staff. Some say he isnt a true #1, i say he is.

Grade: A-

3.16DB Brandon Hardin Oregon State

Hardin never even got on the field for the Bears. He was known to have injury issues, but Phil Emery fell in love with his athleticism. This guy was placed on IR right off the bat. The following preseason he is placed on IR again. Think of him as the Marcus Lattimore of defensive backs. He was cut from the team before the 2014 season and will never play a down of professional football.

Grade: F---------!!-!-

4.16RB Evan Rodriguez Temple

Good ol Evan. He was supposed to be the bears Aaron Hernandez, minus all the murder. He just did not get on the field very often. When given opportunities to showcase his receiving skills, he never caught my eye with any plays. I dont remember him playing much. He was asked to block more in 2012 because of the bad o line play. In 2013 the Bears actually had one of the best lines in football, and he still couldnt show he was a true receiving TE. He is no longer on the team.

Grade: F

6.14DB Isaiah Frey

As a rookie Frey did not get on the field a whole lot. He had a few nice plays in the 2013 preseason which bolstered the coaching staffs confidence in him. He received playing time in the slot during the year. He is an extremely undersized CB which made picking on him pretty easy. The defense was bad as a whole so he didnt really stand out as being terrible. Come 2014 and the Bears are scrambling at CB. I believe they kept Frey in nickel the entire season since there was no way he could match up on the outside. He was burned and beat up all year. He is now no longer on the team.

Grade: D

7.13DB Greg McCoy

I dont remember anything about this guy.

Grade: F

Alshon is the only player from this draft who even belongs in the NFL. The Bears have since moved on from the disaster of a GM that Phil Emery was. In fact, along with drafting a bunch of players who did not belong in the NFL, the Bears had a GM who didnt belong in a GM position, a head coach who didnt belong in the NFL as an assistant, and a DC who should be an assistant to the ball boy.

something to consider: are you grading based purely on 20/20 hindsight, or based on what the teams knew at the time of the draft, or some mixture of both?

I won't go player by player but the 2012 draft looks like an A for the Eagles:

Fletcher Cox

Michael Kendricks

Vinny Curry

Nick Foles

Brandon Boykin

That's a great young DL, good LB and situational pass rusher, average starter at QB and a very good slot CB in the first 4 rounds - terrific haul.

Mostly hindsight, but I'll lay into the Packers for clearly over drafting, like Jerron McMillian. If you reach for a guy you fall in love with and he doesn't perform, I'm definitely going to grade harsher for that.
