***American History Draft***

Recommended Posts

At this point, I say let the voters decide. He was obviously a figure important to the founding of the country.

He was never in America nor was he a resident of any constituent colonies and he opens up the draft for another dozen kings/royalty.

Yeah. We did rule no on people like explorers (de Soto and Columbus and such) as well as Lafayette... all of which I would have taken if I could have.

99.3 - Hugo Black - SCOTUS

Hugo Lafayette Black (February 27, 1886 September 25, 1971) was an American politician and jurist who served in the United States Senate from 1927 to 1937, and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. A member of the Democratic Party and a devoted New Dealer, Black endorsed Franklin D. Roosevelt in both the 1932 and 1936 presidential elections. Having gained a reputation in the Senate as a reformer, Black was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 63 to 16 (6 Democratic Senators and 10 Republican Senators voted against him). He was the first of nine Roosevelt nominees to the Court, and he outlasted all except for William O. Douglas.[5]

The fifth longest-serving justice in Supreme Court history, Black was one of the most influential Supreme Court justices in the 20th century. He is noted for his advocacy of a textualist reading of the United States Constitution and of the position that the liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights were imposed on the states ("incorporated") by the Fourteenth Amendment. During his political career, Black was regarded as a staunch supporter of liberal policies and civil liberties.

However, Black wrote the majority opinion in Korematsu v. United States, which upheld Japanese internment during World War II. Black also consistently opposed the doctrine of substantive due process (the anti-New Deal Supreme Court's interpretation of this concept made it impossible for the government to enact legislation that interfered with the freedom of business owners) and believed that there was no basis in the words of the Constitution for a right to privacy, voting against finding one in Griswold v. Connecticut.

100.3 - Electronic Arts - Media Company

Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) is an American video game company headquartered in Redwood City, California. Founded and incorporated on May 28, 1982 by Trip Hawkins, the company was a pioneer of the early home computer games industry and was notable for promoting the designers and programmers responsible for its games. As of September 2017, Electronic Arts is the second-largest gaming company in the Americas and Europe by revenue and market capitalization after Activision Blizzard and ahead of Take-Two Interactive, and Ubisoft.

Currently, EA develops and publishes games under several labels including EA Sports titles FIFA, Madden NFL, NHL, NCAA Football, NBA Live, and SSX. Other EA labels produce established franchises such as Battlefield, Need for Speed, The Sims, Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer, as well as newer franchises such as Crysis, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Army of Two, Titanfall and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, produced in partnership with LucasArts. EA also owns and operates major gaming studios, EA Tiburon in Orlando, EA Vancouver in Burnaby, BioWare in Edmonton as well as Austin, and DICE in Sweden and Los Angeles.

I get the pick and I say kudos for trying but if I have to pass on Terry O'Reilly or Tiger Williams, who lived and played here but weren't actual U.S. citizens, I can't see allowing somebody who never even stepped foot on the continent.

100 Robert Moses - Designer/Engineer

Robert Moses (December 18, 1888 July 29, 1981) was an American public official who worked mainly in the New York metropolitan area. Known as the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City, Long Island, Rockland County, and Westchester County, he is sometimes compared to Baron Haussmann of Second Empire Paris, and was one of the most polarizing figures in the history of urban development in the United States. His decisions favoring highways over public transit helped create the modern suburbs of Long Island and influenced a generation of engineers, architects, and urban planners who spread his philosophies across the nation despite his not having trained in those professions.[3] Moses would call himself a "coordinator" and was referred to in the media as a "master builder".[3

95.7 Ben Shapiro - Thinker

Shapiro became interested in politics at a young age. He started a nationally syndicated column when he was 17 and had written two books by age 21.[7]

In his 2004 book Brainwashed, Shapiro argues that students are not exposed to a variety of viewpoints at universities and that those who do not have strong opinions will be overwhelmed by an atmosphere dominated by liberal instructors even if discussion is encouraged in classrooms.[8]

In 2011, HarperCollins published Shapiro's fourth book, Primetime Propaganda The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV, in which Shapiro argues that Hollywood has a left-wing agenda which it actively promotes through prime-time entertainment programming. In the book, the producers of Happy Days and M*A*S*H say they pursued a pro-pacifist, anti-Vietnam agenda in those series.[9] The same year Primetime Propaganda came out, Shapiro became a fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.[10]

In 2013, Threshold Editions published Shapiro's fifth book, Bullies: How the Left's Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences Americans.[11]

As a journalist

On October 7, 2013, Shapiro co-founded the TruthRevolt U.S. news and activism website in association with the David Horowitz Freedom Center. As of March 7, 2018, TruthRevolt "closed up shop".[12] In 2012, Shapiro became editor-at-large of Breitbart News, a news and opinion website founded by Andrew Breitbart.[13] In March 2016, Shapiro resigned from his position as editor-at-large of Breitbart News following what he characterized as the website's lack of support for reporter Michelle Fields in response to her alleged assault by Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump's former campaign manager.[14][15]

Shapiro founded The Daily Wire on September 21, 2015. He is editor-in-chief as well as a host of his online political podcast The Ben Shapiro Show, broadcast every weekday.[16] As of November 2017, the podcast was downloaded 10 million times each month.[17]Westwood One began syndicating The Ben Shapiro Show to radio in 2018.[18]

On February 7, 2013, Shapiro published an article citing unspecified Senate sources who said that a group named "Friends of Hamas" was among foreign contributors to the political campaign of Chuck Hagel, a former U.S. Senator awaiting confirmation as Secretary of Defense as a nominee of President Barack Obama, but weeks later Slate reporter David Weigel reported there was no evidence such a group existed.[19] Shapiro told Weigel that the story he published was "the entirety of the information [he] had."[20][21][22]

By 2016 he was one of the hosts for KRLA's "The Morning Answer", a conservative radio show. Internal emails showed that Shapiro faced pressure from Salem Media executives, the syndicate that owned the show, to be more supportive of Trump during the 2016 presidential election. Shapiro however remained highly critical of Trump throughout the election.[23]

Shapiro's views have been described by The New York Times as "extremely conservative". He accuses contemporary liberals of creating an imaginary "hierarchy of victimhood" and glorifying perceived victims, leading to identity politics; The Times describes this as his central talking point.[17] He believes, as he has argued in one of his books, that the left has used its dominance of cinema and TV to push its agenda.[17] He also believes that the election of Donald Trump was more a vote against liberals, and Hillary Clinton in particular, than in favor of Trump's brand of conservatism.[17]

Shapiro believes that African-Americans were historically victims of injustice in the United States, but that they are not victims of widespread systemic injustice today.[17] As of November 2017, he supported lowering taxes on the very wealthy.[17] He is in favor of privatizing social security, criminalizing abortion, and repealing the Affordable Care Act.[17]

99.7 Dennis Prager - Thinker

Prager left Columbia University without finishing his master's degree and decided to write an introduction to Judaism with his friend, Telushkin: The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism. Published in 1976, it became a bestseller that was popular in all major American Jewish movements.[citation needed] The book was intended for nonobservant Jews. Unlike Telushkin, who became an Orthodox rabbi, Prager abandoned his Orthodoxy as an adult but continues to maintain many traditional Jewish practices.[1]

In April 1976, Shlomo Bardin, the founder and director of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, invited Prager to succeed him as the director, and Prager hired Telushkin as education director. Prager remained at the institute until September 1983. During his tenure, he succeeded in influencing many young Jews and built up a cadre of "Prager followers". He married Janice Adelstein in 1981, and in 1983, they had their son, David.[1]

Media

In 1982, KABC (AM) in Los Angeles hired Prager to host a talk show on religion every Sunday night. Prager hosted the show for more than ten years. He and Telushkin published another book in 1983, Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism.[2] Later that year, Prager became the Monday-Thursday talk show host for KABC, but he refused to work on Friday night, the beginning of Shabbat. He also wrote a syndicated column for newspapers across the country. In 1985, Prager launched his own quarterly journal, Ultimate Issues, which was renamed to Prager Perspectives in 1996.[1]

Since 1999, he has hosted a nationally syndicated talk show from KRLA in Los Angeles and Salem Radio Network. His show has some recurring segments. The "Happiness Hour" is based on his book Happiness Is a Serious Problem and occurs on the second hour of his show on Fridays. Other regular segments are the "Male/Female Hour", occurring on the second hour of his Wednesday show, and "Ultimate Issues Hour", which takes place on the third hour of his Tuesday show.

In 2017, Prager and comedian Adam Carolla began filming No Safe Spaces, a documentary about political correctness at universities.[3]

100.8 William H. Taft - President

Going soon after his son who was recently drafted as Senator. Taft is the only person to serve both as President and as Chief Justice on the Supreme Court.

He'd risen through the court system then was appointed as civilian governor of the Philippines and eventually Secretary of War.

As president, he was a free trader, had more focus on the Far East and Latin American Affairs than any president before him, to include the building of the Panama canal and dealing with the headache of Mexico's government collapsing.

Taft continued trust busting as under Roosevelt at an even more rapid clip. He opposed income taxes and so Congress amended the Constitution to overcome his opposition. He'd reached a free trade agreement with Canada but his Canadian counterpart was removed from office before it took effect.

Taft won his battle for control of the Republican Party against Teddy Roosevelt who bolted the party and which, in turn, cost him re-election.

During WWI he was chairman of the Red Cross an later appointed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

102 Truman Capote - Non-Fiction Writer

Truman Garcia Capote[1] (/ˈtrmən kəˈpti/;[2] born Truman Streckfus Persons, September 30, 1924 – August 25, 1984) was an American novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. Many of Capote's short stories, novels, plays, and nonfiction are recognized as literary classics, including the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958) and the true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966), which he labeled a "nonfiction novel". At least 20 films and television dramas have been produced from Capote novels, stories, and plays.

Capote rose above a childhood troubled by divorce, a long absence from his mother, and multiple migrations. He had discovered his calling as a writer by the age of 8,[3] and for the rest of his childhood he honed his writing ability. Capote began his professional career writing short stories. The critical success of one story, "Miriam" (1945), attracted the attention of Random House publisher Bennett Cerf, and resulted in a contract to write the novel Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). Capote earned the most fame with In Cold Blood, a journalistic work about the murder of a Kansas farm family in their home. Capote spent four years writing the book aided by his lifelong friend Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird (1960).[4]

A milestone in popular culture, In Cold Blood was the peak of Capote's literary career. In the 1970s, he maintained his celebrity status by appearing on television talk shows.

99.5 - Zbigniew Brzezinski- Advisor

Zbigniew Kazimierz "Zbig" Brzezinski (/ˈzbɪɡnjɛf brəˈzɪnski/;[1] Polish: [ˈzbʲiɡɲɛf bʐɛˈʑiɲskʲi] (About this sound listen);[2] March 28, 1928 May 26, 2017) was a Polish-American diplomat and political scientist. He served as a counselor to President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1966 to 1968 and was President Jimmy Carter's National Security Advisor from 1977 to 1981. Brzezinski belonged to the realist school of international relations, standing in the geopolitical tradition of Halford Mackinder and Nicholas J. Spykman.[3][4]

Major foreign policy events during his time in office included the normalization of relations with the People's Republic of China (and the severing of ties with the Republic of China on Taiwan); the signing of the second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT II); the brokering of the Camp David Accords; the transition of Iran from an important U.S. ally to an anti-Western Islamic Republic led by Khomeini; the United States' encouragement of dissidents in Eastern Europe and championing of human rights in order to undermine the influence of the Soviet Union;[5] the arming of the mujahideen in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; and the signing of the TorrijosCarter Treaties relinquishing U.S. control of the Panama Canal after 1999.

Brzezinski served as the Robert E. Osgood Professor of American Foreign Policy at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and a member of various boards and councils. He appeared frequently as an expert on the PBS program The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, ABC News' This Week with Christiane Amanpour, and on MSNBC's Morning Joe, where his daughter, Mika Brzezinski, is co-anchor. He was a supporter of the Prague Process.[6] His eldest son, Ian, is a foreign policy expert, and his youngest son, Mark, was the United States Ambassador to Sweden from 2011 to 2015.

101 Ray Tomlinson - Inventor (repick)

Email became popular at the onset of the 21st century. It has become the preferred form of communication because it enables quick relay of messages and at the same time saves resources like ink and paper. The first email was sent in 1971 using ARPANET, by Ray Tomlinson, between two computer terminals placed side by side. Ray Tomlinson, a programmer from New York, is also credited for using the ampersat (@) sign to separate the user’s name and the user’s machine, the latter changed to the domain name later.

101.1 Popé - Native American

What little we know of Po’pay the man is distorted through the lenses of the Spanish chroniclers and their Indian informants, most of whom were opposed to Po’Pay.

His lifetime coincided with the subjugation of the Pueblo people of New Mexico by the Spanish. As you may know, at this time, the Spanish were rather ruthless suppressors of the indigenous peoples. The Pueblo population had dropped from ~40-80K to 15K at the time of his revolt and were under Spanish occupation. After the revolt and Pope’s death, the new Spanish governor took a softer approach to the Pueblo, ending the forced labor (slavery) and not interfering in Peublo religious practices and laying the groundwork for Spanish/Pueblo cooperation and modern New Mexico.

Popé first enters the history books as one of 47 Pueblo religious leaders captured, accused of practicing witchcraft. Three of his companions were executed, a fourth committed suicide. The rest were whipped and beaten and scheduled to be sold into slavery. The Spanish released them instead to placate the Pueblo population upset with their capture as they were fighting the Apaches and Navajo and didn't want problems on their rear flank.

Po’pay was described as a “fierce and dynamic individual…who inspired respect bordering on fear in those who dealt with him."

After his release, Po'pay retired to the remote Taos Pueblo and began planning a rebellion. Po'pay's message was simple: destroy the Spanish and their influence and go back to the old ways of life that had given the Pueblos relative peace, prosperity, and independence. The Pueblo revolt displayed "all the classic characteristics of a revitalization movement...the emergence of a charismatic leader, the development of a core group of followers who spread the prophet's message to the wider public; and, ultimately the successful transformation of Pueblo cultures and communities."

“It took a unique individual to orchestrate the revolt across two dozen communities who spoke six different languages and were sprawled over a distance of nearly 400 miles."

After years of peace with the Pueblo, the Spanish were caught offguard at such widespread support among the population and were overthrown out of Santa Fe. The revolt killed 400 Spaniards including 21 of 33 priests, including Popé's son-in-law. 2000 fleeing Spanish refugees were allowed to return to El Paso unmolested.

Pope' was able to withstand two attempts by the Spanish to retake control but his dreams of uniting the Pueblo and returning them to their old way of life failed. He was under attacks by other Native tribes, the same ones that had dogged the Spaniards and had a large number of Christian converts in his population with ties and sympathy to the Spanish. So his grip on power was already weakening by the time of his death and subsequent return of the Spanish. The Spanish were magnanimous, granting pardons to Pope's followers, ended their worst practices, and rebuilt a cooperation with the Pueblo against the other regional tribes.

TBBOM's internet access is erratic and he's said to feel free to skip him until further notice. He'll catch up whenever that is. Shotsup, meanwhile is back on regular schedule and shouldn't get skipped unless his timer expires.... which is the case right now. It has.

So I'd say ZeroT can feel free to go.

101.6 - Mickey Mantle - Baseball
Mantle was arguably the greatest offensive threat of any center fielder in baseball history. He has the highest career OPS+ of any center fielder and he had the highest stolen base percentage in history at the time of his retirement. In addition, compared to the four other center fielders on the all-century team, he had the lowest career rate of grounding into double plays (by far) and he had the highest World Series on-base percentage and World Series slugging percentage. He also had an excellent 0.984 fielding percentage when playing center field. Mantle was noted for his ability to hit for both average and power,[4] especially tape measure home runs.[5] He hit 536 MLB career home runs, batted .300 or more ten times, and is the career leader (tied with Jim Thome) in walk-off home runs, with a combined thirteen, twelve in the regular season and one in the postseason.
Mantle won the Triple Crown in 1956, leading the major leagues in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in (RBI); he later wrote a book about his best year in baseball.[6] To date, he is the last Triple Crown winner to have led all of Major League Baseball in all three Triple Crown categories. He was an All-Star for 16 seasons, playing in 16 of the 20 All-Star Games that were played.[a] He was an American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times and a Gold Glove winner once. Mantle appeared in 12 World Series including seven championships, and holds World Series records for the most home runs (18), RBIs (40), extra-base hits (26), runs (42), walks (43), and total bases (123).
102.6 - Pete Maravich - Basketball
Peter Press Maravich (June 22, 1947 – January 5, 1988), known by his nickname Pistol Pete, was an American professional basketball player. Maravich was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, and raised in the Carolinas.[1] Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and played for three NBA teams until injuries forced his retirement in 1980. He is the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game. All of his accomplishments were achieved before the adoption of the three point line and shot clock, and despite being unable to play varsity as a freshman under then-NCAA rules.[2] One of the youngest players ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Maravich was cited by the Hall as "perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history".[3] In an April 2010 interview, Hall of Fame player John Havlicek said that "the best ball-handler of all time was Pete Maravich".

He also did all of that while missing his left coronary artery (a birth defect that wasn't found until his heart finally gave out and he died at age 40).

Good picks. Im from OK, and so are they. That automatically made them 2 of my childhood sports heroes.

Id considered them both in this draft,

but ultimately went in other directions. Glad to see them represented.
