Draft Time & Potential Delays

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

For the sake of moving the draft along, does anyone have any vacation/difficult days/weeks upcoming. Last year, we started the draft on 3/10 and it took us 2 weeks. We've got 3 weeks plus a couple days to get this thing done. We should be more than capable of doing that as long as we don't have much in the way of delays. This does mean that we'll need to average about 1 round per day and keep in mind that Torn will need some time to enter rosters (i've done this before and it's a pain in the a$$), time to confirm all rosters are set properly plus a day or two to adjust, etc.

Please post here if you've got time away. I can tell you guys that with a 2 year old and inadvertently becoming head of my firm last summer, I will most definitely be less reachable than in the past. Thankfully, I don't have any planned absences upcoming. Looking forward to this draft and just trying to help things move smoothly.

All the Best,

Alex/Kysar

No issues that I can think of but I will warn in advance that being a long time member of this forum and having multiple reasons to be here between different leagues, I sometimes leave the site open on my home PC or on my cell browser.

So if you see me here and I'm on the clock but unresponsive, I may not actually be here. Apologize in advance for that. Just shoot me a text when needed.

I had mentioned in another thread that Tucker (my son) and I are away from Sat 3/11 through Monday 3/13. Drafting for either of us during this time will be very difficult so sorry in advance for any delays.

Historically, Ghost/Forensicguy (I don't think I'll ever get used to referring to you as anything but Ghost) are pretty good at keeping folks on their toes via texts. We will continue to do so to the best of our ability.

I don't have any extended absences planned, but I will certainly have a few blackout periods (of several hours) where I'll be unavailable.

Make use of us as proxies when you can. If you are away from a computer and need to know "who were the last 3-4 guys selected" or "is John Doe still available", happy to help.

That being said, I also realize there are some stages in a draft where you just want spend a half hour pouring over stats, getting the opinions of the "experts", looking at ADP, over stressing and overthinking your decision, making a choice, finger hovering over the submit button but not clicking it, making that one last check to see if any new player news has come up, pacing for a bit arguing with yourself over what stats you are light on, convincing yourself that this is who you're going to pick, sitting back down, still not clicking, allowing yourself to get distracted for another 30 mins, coming back and eventually just picking your original guy with an "ef it" (said in your head or often out loud) ... We all have those picks along the way. :wall:

No major worries. Thanks for the heads up.

Now that I have confirmed my keepers, ....and the draft might commence sooner, ...rather than later, ...I am currently in trial. I *HOPE* to testify tomorrow, ...and make the 3 hour drive home, ...even if it is late in the day. Then, ...as usual, ...I will be very involved in nudging owners along for their draft picks.

As many of you know, ...I am a DNA specialist. I promised everyone last year, ...to clue you in on a Dateline NBC homicide that I was involved with--DNA. As promised, ...here is the link:

The Dateline episode never mentions who the defense DNA expert was, ...trust me, ...I was the guy. I testified on Nov. 1, 2016. Watch the episode, ...interesting, ...I will give no more details, ...no spoiler alerts.

Too cool... Our own CSI, NCIS type of character right in our own league! Thanks for the work you do to keep our world a little safer.

Do you do anything with the CODIS software from the FBI?

I think we've talked about this briefly before but my wife works a lot with DNA. Not on the same level as you, but in a lab doing both processing and analysis of samples for the pharmacutical world. We watch dateline a LOT as a result. I haven't seen this particular case yet. It's often amusing to see/listen to her pick apart the cases and how they are presented. Dateline usually does significantly better than the CSI type shows but some times its just comical (more so to her than to me). Good work sir, we all appreciate your work!

Do you do anything with the CODIS software from the FBI?

Good question. I wish I could. CODIS results play into case investigations all of the time. The FBI fully controls CODIS. They provide guidelines to the Crime Labs, specifying when a DNA profile is complete enough to 'upload' into CODIS, ...and when it is not. So, ...the crime lab analysts are certainly encouraged to use the system in an attempt to obtain a hit. The analysts might also conduct what are called 'keyboard searches' of local DNA databases, and statewide DNA databases, etc. to see if a partial DNA profile strongly resembles 'somebody out there'.

Just a hint: A FULL DNA profile from a Red Bull can in the vehicle (the Dateline NBC case) could be important--but the CODIS search did not provide any matches. One of my problems (one of my gripes) is that the defense has NO RIGHTS to the CODIS software, ...no access to any level of CODIS, local, state, or national. Counsel for the defense has no say--unless armed with a hard-fought order from the Court--regarding which partial profiles should qualify for CODIS searches and which should not. The same goes for those nifty little 'keyboard searches', ...which the FBI cares about only moderately--because those searches cause no actual changes in the precious national database. The key issue: A partial profiles, ...or perhaps a DNA mixture profile, might offer opportunities for a CODIS upload, ...or at least a keyboard search. But what if the prosecutor is satisfied with his/her case against a known suspect. That prosecutor might discourage the scientists from pursuing any added DNA database initiatives. After all, ...such searches might identify other possible suspects and 'screw up the case' against the poor schmuck that they are convinced must have done it.

If that sort of 'influence' ever happens, ...it's just wrong.

I would like to hear your feedback, ...and especially from your DNA wife, ...on that "Somebody was waiting" case.

I work on the contract for the company that develops the CODIS software for the FBI...

Godfather sent me final approval of his keepers when texted today. 10 of 12 done. We also know that strombn is still debating his 4th, so no problems there either.

Foul Line is hard to get in touch with. Seems like texting is either not his thing or he doesn't keep his phone on his person. Am hopeful he'll be more attentive as the draft progresses. Long responsiveness gaps are acceptable when they are communicated. Work, family, sleep, parties, etc. happen. Long responsiveness gaps $uck when no-one has a clue of what's going on...

I'm always busy and on the go but as you guys know I generally will just text in my picks (usually have a pretty good idea of who I want lol). So if I'm on the clock for awhile just shoot me a text and I should be able to get a pick in within an hour or so depending on what I've got going on.

Sounds good - thanks for the update! Can we consider your keepers as finalized?
