Bought Lil Bunny Her First Car This Week

Recommended Posts

2005 Toyota Corrolla. Four door with low mileage. Good little car for her first until she graduates HS next year.

Me and wifey were talking about our first cars. Mine was a 78 Delta 88 black two door. A beast. Hers was a 80 Chevette two door.

What was yours and what did you get your kids? And do you think yours was/is nicer in comparison.

Bought my daughter a 2010 Nissan Sentra, great car, held up very well.

'65 Ford Falcon... two years older than I was. 4 doors, 6 cylinders, 0-60 in a minute or so. Exhaust fell off, which did cut down on the exhaust fumes coming in through the back seat.

My daughter isn't driving yet but mine was a four door psychedelic blue Chevy Nova with a one speaker AC Delco radio. Not sure of the year. My dad bought it from some old lady in the church and I'm confident I got laid in it about as much as she did.

after spending some time looking at used cameros, mustangs, and trans ams, we decided that dad was going to give me his 1980 datsun 280zx in 85/86. too many d-bag salesmen. had it through college (1991/92). loved that car.

daughter is 11. mrs has a hackback subaru imprezza...we are hoping to hold onto that for daughter, but my guess is that we trade it for the next one for mrs bier.

It's weird these days.

With all the safety features, always better each year, you really should give the NEW car to your kids.

You don't need that sh1t. Lane departure, backup sensor, auto stop, etc. We learned without it.

But maybe they do. They focking suck at driving,

However why should the little brat get a focking NEW car??!

Not sure what the answer is. Thoughts, anyone?

i think modern cars have enough features to keep them safe. not sure i want to drop the $$$ on a new car for a new driver. get em something reliable and safe. they can pick their next one.

You test-driven a 2017?

We were in the market for a new family car, so I did. Honda Pilot and CRV were pretty impressive as far as the near-base model had all kinds of sh1t in it. Yes, focking Honda. Basically drove itself. Told you if there was someone in a lane you were trying to merge into, hit the brakes if you were going to rear end someone, beeped at you if you were going to back into something, etc. etc. We're not talk curtain airbags here.

the last car we tested was my wife's current, that we purchased in 2012 (CPO 2010 subaru). i bought my car 4 years ago from a dealer up in washington. had a friend test drive it for me and take it to a shop i researched to check it out. it passed and i flew up to settle the details and drove it home to sonoma.

i agree that the features on the new models are more advanced than the cars we bought 4 and 5 years ago

You screwed the pooch on that one. Bet you didn't even get the true Corinthian Leather with that model.

Should have bought a '75

My dad passed away in 1985 when I graduated HS so my brother and I inherited his 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic. We traded off driving it in college until it bit the dust around 1990 (bro had it in college, transimission died). The first car I actually bought was a 1989 Ford Mustang 5.0L XL. Dayum I loved that car.

Two years ago we had two kids working summer jobs so we broke down and bought a 2009 Corolla with 100K+ miles on it. The price was off the bell curve great so we felt like we couldn't resist. Kids are still sharing it.

Back then, my grandfather owned a body shop. It was kinda tradition that each of the grandkids got one of the cars that he fixed and was never paid for.

My oldest cousin was first. Got a mid 80's ford probe.

When my turn came, there was the 87 CRX hatchback, or an 84 ford crown vic ltd.

Mom wanted me to take the ford. Because it was bigger and this presumably safer. I asked her, you gonna pay my gas bill? No? Then I'll take the rice burner go kart.

Dad said "the ford will hold like six of his idiot friends. So in the long run, it's less safe anyway.

1988 Ford Escort

Mine was also a Ford Escort. It had a few years on it when I got back from Germany in '92 so maybe mine was an '86 or so.

Even with the safety features, the kid is going to crash the car. Just buy them something small, but safe for low $.

My oldest gets his license in November and he is getting a Honda Civic with 135k miles on it. I am not spending big.

I think a sensible approach is like this. Buy a safe beater at 16. If they don't wreck it, and take care of it, get something better when they go off to college.

Didn't get my own car until I was a senior in college....1979 Datsun B210, for $1000. POS lasted a year, and it was only 7 years old when I bought it. Geez, I guess even the Japs made crap cars back then.

Our oldest got a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse when he started driving...$3400, he paid half. Another POS car....

Man I wanted that car so bad. Everyone else was in love with the GT back then, but the LX was so understated, powerful, and those 5 spoke wheels just topped it off.

I had to settle for a 85 Nissan pickup. Not much of a panty dropper but I made it work. Its funny looking back that a passenger side mirror and rear bumper was an option and not standard. I had no A/C either.

No, but it might turn out to be too expensive for you in the next few years.

I recently picked up an '02 Suburban from a guy I used to work with for $2K.

He lost his license 2 yrs ago - DUI - so it's been sitting in storage since then. The engine, tranny, body, paint and frame are solid, but I'm having to replace lots of stuff on it.

So far, new brake and fuel lines, new mirrors, new headliner, door trim, rims and a seat cushion.

Taking it in to have the A/C system fixed next week.

When it's done, it will be a great 2nd vehicle for work, beach, camping, fishing, hauling kids to games, etc.

The day after I bought it, I sold my '95 Ford Explorer to a kid who's going off to college for $2K.

I'd been considering a new Suburban, but at $60K+ all loaded up, I just can't see it.

Ive got an 02 with 255k. Had it since 2004. Its been a beast. How much did the brake line replacement run you? Ive got to do mine.

With the exception of general maitenance, water pump and PS pump its been rock solid. An FYI...if and when it starts idling rough, clean the throttle body before you waste time taking it to a shop.

Complete brake line, caliper and fuel line replacement was just under $2500. They were completley rusted and corroded due to sitting for so long.

Thanks for the tip on the throttle. Right now, it purrs like a kitten.

I'm really hoping to drive this thing to at least 300K miles. From what I've read, that's not out of the question. It's got 140K on it now.

If it can make it that far, it will be well worth this minor restoration I'm going through now.
