WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 29, 2017 My memory is that I saw it coming at the time. Maybe I was on my 5th mini bottle of airplane hooch which is why I'm willing to give it another go. i have to admit I did not see Leo's death coming but absolutely saw Matt Damon's as well as Damon's "partner". WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 29, 2017 Yup, Marty has at least 2 better movies and possibly 4 that would beranked higher. I put it in the very good category, but can understand people saying it's overrated, it won the Oscar but it's not an all time classic like Goodfellas & Raging Bull. I have it behind Gangs of New York and in the tier with shutter Island and Taxi Driver, but ahead of Casino. exactly. the oscar was more of a make up call, I think. The movie was good enough to win it but the fact Marty could have won a few others probably put it over the top. Like, okay its time to give this guy his award. Djgb13 2,338 Posted January 29, 2017 i dont know the chronology off the top of my head without looking but I think blood diamond was before. but i liked that so if anything, his performance in departed made me watch some more of his stuff and not just relate him to Titanic. I really enjoyed Inception which is coincidentally where my favorite actor, Tom Hardy, got his first true main stream recognition. No the departed came out Oct 2006 and blood diamond came out Dec 2006
WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 29, 2017 No the departed came out Oct 2006 and blood diamond came out Dec 2006 felt like blood diamond was older. oh well. i wasnt egregiously wrong
Djgb13 2,338 Posted January 29, 2017 felt like blood diamond was older. oh well. i wasnt egregiously wrong No I remember blood diamond coming out after. Leo's role in the departed is what made me give it a shot and I enjoyed it. Like you said I imagined him mostly in the titanic or that Romeo and Juliet movie until I watched the departed. I think that was really a turning point for him cause he started doing more serious, gritty movies and I enjoy his acting now

I think that was really a turning point for him cause he started doing more serious, gritty movies and I enjoy his acting now I'm not a huge Leo fan, but I've never seen him as the pretty boy. I think the image comes from Titanic only, but some of that makes sense considering it was the biggest film of all time. But Leo films before Titanic included: - This Boy's Life - Gilbert Grape - Basketball Diaries None of those were "pretty" at all. Basketball Diaries is difficult to watch even.... Looking back, his only pretty boy period was Romeo, Titanic, Man in the Iron Mask, and The Beach. Then all before The Departed included: - Catch me if you Can - The Aviator - Gangs of New York
jerryskids 5,191 Posted January 29, 2017 i have to admit I did not see Leo's death coming but absolutely saw Matt Damon's as well as Damon's "partner". So I rewatched it again last night. I had not seen Leo's death coming either, but my problem with it is that IMO it violates the writer's compact with the audience and their "willing suspension of disbelief," which is to say, nothing in the movie to that point indicated that that otherwise nothing character was a mole, until BLAM, then "hey, I'm a mole too!" Bah, that is no way to kill off the main character. Relatedly, and maybe I missed it, but why did Marky Mark shoot Damon? Was there any indication that he was tied to something? So basically the two lead characters are killed off in crappy ways. Otherwise it was OK, better than I had remembered but still somewhat disjointed. The way Leo became an undercover cop was unbelievable; they could have handled that better. Similar for Damon whooshing right into the special plain-clothes unit. Maybe it is just Damon movies (thinking Good Will Hunting) but I never buy the love interest. I also didn't like the casting in that Damon and Leo look similar enough that for a while I was like "OK, that's Damon, he's the mole cop, right?" The Boston accents have already been covered. Still, it moved quickly and was engaging. I'll give it 4 Jerry stars.
frank 2,144 Posted January 29, 2017 Relatedly, and maybe I missed it, but why did Marky Mark shoot Damon? Was there any indication that he was tied to something? I have never been sure about that. Maybe he was just a cop and killed him for being a traitor and getting people (including Martin Sheen) killed or maybe he was a bad guy and did it because Damon killed Nicholson (although I don't think anyone knows that).I don't think you missed anything though. Eta: Now that I think about it, I guess everyone would know he shot Nicholson even if nobody saw him do it.
WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 29, 2017 id have to rewatch it but i thought there was something that tipped Marky's character off to Damon working for for Jack. Something Leo did in advance in case he died.... like the recording he leaves for Damon's girl.
kutulu 1,545 Posted January 29, 2017 Most assume the truth is in the envelope Leo gives to the chick with instructions to read it if anything happens to him... But the contents are never revealed to the audience.

jerryskids 5,191 Posted January 29, 2017 Yep. I always just assumed Marky Mark was given the envelope naming Damon. That's possible, but they never established anything in Marky's character that would indicate he would shoot a man in cold blood.

WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 29, 2017 That's possible, but they never established anything in Marky's character that would indicate he would shoot a man in cold blood. i think throughout the movie they give signals that hes kind of a hot head, loose cannon type. WhiteWonder 2,171 Posted January 30, 2017 Wait - Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon are two different people? yea, one is a good actor, the other got some roles after being an underwear model. hes kind of funny but a sub par actor.
wiffleball 4,638 Posted January 30, 2017 Well crap. Now I gotta go back and watch the movie again....
wiffleball 4,638 Posted January 30, 2017 I liked the part where Wahlberg told off that snooty MIT guy and said "how do ya like them apples?" That was cool. But Minnie Driver rooned it. She was WAY too old for him. - And British.
tanatastic 2,061 Posted January 30, 2017 It's just an epic movie with a stellar cast, great performances and just...it's just great. Love any movie centered around gangsters. Goodfellas, Godfather, Bronx tale, all of em.
wiffleball 4,638 Posted January 30, 2017 Dedicated to that retard Jerry. Who is either a really bad, bitter, angry drunk (wouldn't blame him) or: Just completely clueless. Or , likely both. supermike80 1,285 Posted January 30, 2017 While I agree that Sheen had a terrible Boston accent, I think the movie was plenty cohesive. Perhaps it felt otherwise to some because there were so many big names (bog personalities) in the cast. I do think what you're saying about Marky Mark is funny because I thought his acting was absolute dog shiit in departed and almost ruined the movie. He's one of those guys who has grown on me but just funny because even though he doesn't need a Boston accent, I thought his sounded poor in the movie as well. Totally agree about Wahlberg. I think he's a terrible actor. Not sure why he keeps getting gigs. Only thing I liked him in was boogie nights cause he was supposed to be campy, and he acts like that without trying

Only thing I liked him in was boogie nights cause he was supposed to be campy, and he acts like that without trying ive liked him in a few things. mostly comedies. he was funny in pain or gain? with Rock. Kind of funny in the family movie with Will Ferrell. Serious movies..... he was ehh decent in the movie where he has to stop a sniper but the pin it on him, i dont remember what its called. Shooter maybe
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted February 17, 2017 That's possible, but they never established anything in Marky's character that would indicate he would shoot a man in cold blood. You mean like when he punched Sullivan and said he would never give up the files and then quit after Queenan was killed? Dignam knew that Sullivan was either dirty or an IA a-hole. To think that there was no foreshadowing on this is silly. Now, if you think that all of the killing was over the top and unexpected, then you would be right. Heck, I think Scorcese thinks that.
