mmmmm...beer 691 Posted March 13, 2018 As the media portrays bribery as a normal part of the Chinese culture, can you tell us if you've experienced that at all? Say in your personal dealings over there with officials? How about parents? Anyone ever try to butter you up for their kids grades?

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted March 14, 2018 Bribery no. Ive heard stories. It usually goes down like they arrest you over some dumbass crap (like an argument over a taxi fare or a minor traffic accident) and hold you until you pay some arbitrary amount of money. I had a cop threaten to arrest me once for driving my electric bike in the wrong lane (along with 90% of the rest of the bikers). I told him fine, Ill call my embassy and we will see how his boss likes the paperwork. See who still has a job in the morning. He told me to go away. I dont usually have any direct interaction with the visa authorities. My company does that crap for me. I just show up and sign the paper. I have heard that people working illegally (without a proper visa) sometimes bribe the cops if they get raided to avoid arrest, but Im legal so I dunno. Supposedly it is quite common for the rub and tugs, underground casinos, and other illegal businesses to pay protection money to the cops. I have no personal knowledge of such though. You have to figure its true though. If my non speaking Chinese ass can tell you where they are, you gotta figure the cops know right? As for the students thing, yeah, on teachers day and Christmas I used to have parents send some pretty elaborate presents. We were not permitted to accept them though, and my narc Chinese assistant enforced that. I had a friend who claims a parent paid him a nice chunk of change to put his son next to a certain girl in class. Apparently, her daddy was a party big wig, and the parent hopes a marriage could happen (the kids go from k-6 in the same class. I dunno what happens in middle and high school.) he was a compulsive liar though, so thats likely full of sh!t.
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted March 14, 2018 Oh, some context for the above cop story. Here, police officers are not respected. At all. I have seen Chinese people curse them, spit at them, and even hit them. I would never talk that way to an American cop. But here, I have learned to take no sh!t from them. He stopped me because he figured a foreigner would be scared of a cop. I had to disabuse him of that notion. I have told several cops to go fock themselves over here. In my old city. Never had any interaction with them here.
