The NFL still dominates TV. Sunday’s AFC championship between the Patriots and Jaguars was the highest-rated program on television since last year’s Super Bowl, per CBS. The contest earned an overnight household share of 27.3 in metered markets, peaking at 50.
The Patriots’ presence and dramatic finish almost certainly boosted the game’s viewership. It drew virtually the same number as Packers-Falcons, who played in last year’s early conference championship game. This year’s late-game between the Vikings and Eagles was down compared to last year’s Patriots-Steelers AFC championship, but Philadelphia’s blowout win probably deflated the audience.
Ratings for the Divisional Round were down 11 percent in comparison to last season, despite three one-possession games. With that in mind, the strong conference championship numbers probably brought lots of relief to the NFL offices in Manhattan Monday.
While NFL ratings continue to decline on the whole, it remains the biggest draw on TV. Thirty-seven of the 50 highest-rated shows this fall were NFL contests. With the Patriots and Eagles set to square off in Super Bowl LII, the big game will likely attract more than 100 million viewers for the ninth-straight year.

NFL needs the Patriots.
